The button is rinsed in rubbing alcohol to clean its surface, including any oils. It's wiped on clean paper tissue. After the cleaning, it's handled only from the edges and back to prevent anything from getting onto the metal to be etched. The mask is stuck onto the clean surface and pressed to stick by pushing the button upside-down onto paper tissue.
Edited: The button is 'elan' brand, model #15 8976. In appearance, it's a flat silver-metal disk, 15 mm overall diameter with a 13 mm raised central disk. There's a metal loop on the back. I asked the distributor what its composition is, and was told that it's "Zamac" -- an alloy of zinc, aluminum, magnesium, and copper. They don't know which version of that alloy was used. From the final results, it's evidently got at least some copper (some Zamac versions don't), and the high proportions of Zn, Al, and Mg go a long way to explain the rapid etching that I saw.
Reissues of etchings by Jean Lepautre of interior furnishings. These images are reversed and do not bear Lepautre's name or the French publisher from 1751. These are probably from a Dutch 1786 edition by S. Bosboom.
