Here's a recent Etching of Xandria printed with AKUA burnt umber ink on St.Cuthbert's museum-grade paper on my press. 5x7inch solarplate laid on top of copper plate for extra embossing.

This 3x4 inch etching is the first of soon to be many "fancy pigeons". In this series I hope to show the beauty of a bird that is often scorned by urban societies. Like the sea horse, pigeons are monogamous animals and I would venture to say they are much more clever than we give them credit for.
This print is part of an edition of 40, printed on Ingres Antique Sky Blue paper using sepia etching ink by Graphic Chemical. Image size is 3x4 inches, printed on 6x9 inch paper.

Etching was first used in the early 16th century. The back and edges of a metal plate are protected with a coat of varnish, and its surface covered with a 'ground'. The tracing of a drawing is placed on the plate and both are rolled through a press.
The lines of the drawing are gone over with a needle to expose the metal. The plate is then dipped in an acid bath to etch these lines to the right depth. The finest lines are etched first then protected with varnish before the immersion is repeated.
When the completed plate was inked and wiped, ink remained only in the engraved recesses. Variations in tone are achieved because the amount of ink transferred to the paper varies with depth of these recesses.
