Prehistoric rock etchings.....dates back to 6000 BC......one can spot human figures..........men having raised hair (Tribal chief) .He holds an angular object in his right hand and seems to be wearing a tight garment that reveals an hour-glass torso. Another man next to him has a square-shaped head and spiral belly. Some of the figures are wearing masks and heavy garments. The figure of a woman is easily recognizable

Vinyl stencils for etching shot glasses

Took a printmaking class this summer, and learned how to etch. The plate was a sheet of zinc, etched with nitric acid.

I got the basic shape of the flower from the outline of a rubber stamp that a swapper sent me, so I sent this to her.

"Fagin!' Whispeed a voice close tohis ear."

FINALLY! This past Fall semester, I traded in my hip waders and Ecology books for paint brushes and film canisters. I spent the semester at Indiana University South Bend as a student in their fantastic Fine Arts department. I have finally gotten my butt in gear and have managed to scan my work!

One of my classes was a Printmaking course where we learned Etching, Silkscreen, Engraving, and Lithography.

This is an engraving done with two plates. The first plate is the cherry engraving and then a second plate is used to get the colored background.

Once the transfer is complete and the transfer paper is removed you have to get rid of all of the extra copper on the board. You use an etchant, in this case Ferric Chloride to remove all of the excess copper. Simply drop some ferric chloride into a bag with the board and agitate. The Ferric Chloride will work faster if its warm, so heat the etchant in a water bath before or during etching.

This week in college it's "poor man's etching" - cutting a design into shiny card, so you just cut off the shiny layer, varnish the card, cover it with ink, then wipe the ink into the lines and take as much or as little of it off as you want, and stick it through the etching press.

This is made using this photo of the lovely FatMandy - I traced the image onto the card with carbon paper.

I'm interested in how different the expression on his face is when I traced it. My vision was heavy dark ink and shady detail for the background, and as clean lines as I could get for the face. Was gutted when the white of his eyes came off - which is why they're just darkness. I'm not overly confident about faces yet, so it's totally minimal. Not sure about the fingers, either
