This is a detail of a giant copper plate containing an etching by (and I quote Jerry here) "This guy who's a musician, he used to date Sandra Bullock I think."

A closer look at the lovely classic, grown up but slightly quirky fabrics - little french street maps and blueprints of French buildings interpersed with some classic muted colours and floral designs, and a deep red which pops yet holds it all together. the fabrics look great in my brother's living room which is in the same blue colour as in the collection - I was really happy they liked it so much :)

My first totally digital card thanks to Shari!

When I saw the card on Hero Arts Blog today and Shari's video using the stone etchings, I got excited because I loved what she was doing and I had had the digital Hero Arts etching for a while now and had never used them. Thanks so much for the inspiration Shari. So here is pretty much Shari's card with a few variations.

Thank you for looking!

Attended a printing demo at my local art store where we were given the opportunity to make prints after creating an etching on a type of thin plexiglass and then use a tabletop press and a pin press to print a background and then the etching. Love the result, but the equipment is too expensive to have at home for the limited use I would get from it.

Etched once for line, four extra times for tone and once further for texture. Burnished back several times after *that* to give extra levels of tone and to remove some nasty scratches. Stopped out with straw hat varnish and vaseline at various stages. There's a bit of drypoint in there as well, but it didn't hold the ink once cleaned.

Next time I think I'd etch the line less strongly at first (or be a lot more gentle with the drypoint tool at the line stage), burnish back more and be a lot more washy with the stopping out. My favourite areas of tone are those where only a thin layer of varnish went on.

Aluminium plate etched with copper sulphate.

I tried drypoint etching for the first time at a workshop run by Heather at the Marches Book Arts Group.

We used Tetrapack containers which had previously been used for fruit juice, and I etched a doodle using an awl and various mark making tools.

This image shows the etching on the left hand side and the print on the right.

This is a intaglio print. An intaglio print, such as an engraving or etching, where the areas are blank, and the carvings are black. The plate is carved with a design, and ink is applied to fill in the gaps. After the ink is applied it is then wiped away with newspaper to create a blank surface. Much greater pressure is needed to force the paper into the channels containing ink, and a high pressure press will normally be required. After my print was dry i painted it using watercolour.

In 1997, shortly after moving to Long Island, my late Mom gave me this etching, which she must have picked up at a flea market or antique store in Binghamton, NY. I loved it instantly because she had never given me a work of art before. It showed that she understood my love of modern art & my sensibilities. Think the artist's signature is BJ Fredrickson, but I can find nothing on line about him/her. From my personal art collection.

I started off my taking photos of my face which I thought captured an intensity and emotion in my eyes. After choosing the photo, I edited it so that I could pick out the contours and shading in the face. In the top-left print, I used monoprinting which I really like as it creates a sketchy type print, and paint naturally transfers over which makes one-of-a-kind prints. The other 3 prints are etchings - my print can be seen on the far right. Out of the 3 prints, I prefer the ones which were done in brown, as opposed to the multi-coloured one.
