W. Eugene Smith’s Landmark Photo Essay, ‘Nurse Midwife’
“In December 1951, LIFE published one of the most extraordinary photo essays ever to appear in the magazine. Across a dozen pages and featuring more than 20 of the great W. Eugene Smith’ pictures, the story of a tireless South Carolina nurse and midwife named Maude Callen opened a window on a world that, surely, countless LIFE readers had never seen — and, perhaps, had never even imagined. Working in the rural South in the 1950s, in “an area of some 400 square miles veined with muddy roads,” as LIFE put it, Callen served as “doctor, dietician, psychologist, bail-goer and friend” to thousands of poor (most of them desperately poor) patients — only two percent of whom were white.”
“Nurse Midwife” as it appeared in the Dec. 3, 1951, issue of LIFE magazine.

Stylistic and manufacturing similarities between this table and three other chairs in the Museum’s collection likely made by Pottier & Stymus warrant its attribution to that large and important New York City firm. As were the establishments of Leon Marcotte and the Herter Brothers, Pottier & Stymus was truly an interior decorating concern, capable of providing everything required, including the architecture, for the complete furnishing of a house.

This plaster sculpture, based on the popular Washington Irving story published in 1819, depicts Rip returning as an old man from his twenty-year sleep in the Catskills. The sculptor, Rogers, secured a middle-class audience through the maxim of large sales and small profits, producing some eighty thousand plasters during his career. In Rip Van Winkle Returned, Rogers displays his mastery of realistic subjects, skillfully detailing the wrinkles in Rip’s tattered coat and trousers, his flowing beard, his confused expression, and his aged dog.

I’ve uploaded the bulk of the photos that I took in Valencia with the Canon 5D Mk3 so I’m working on the stuff from the little G1X Mk2 now. This will generally be snapshots or quirkier stuff where it’s easier to fire away with the smaller camera. A lot of the photos from the G1 are just backups for the bigger camera – in case of disaster, I won’t be uploading those, I have a big problem choosing what to upload in any case and have uploaded a lot of similar shots already (as usual!) I will upload the better ones though, it’s only Flickr, it’s not costing anything and people don’t have to look. It’s been noticeable that each Valencia photo has had a similar number of views which is a sign that people are interested enough to keep looking. If I upload samey truck or landscape shots the views get progressively lower further down the stream. Sometimes I use the smaller camera because I’ve put the other in my backpack to give my wrist a rest ( carpal tunnel!) and I can’t be bothered getting it back out and I can keep the G1X in a pocket.
I’m not adding the Valencia trip essay – it’s in the Album intro.
Detecting events in the universe; like collisions between two black holes. Events so catastrophic that it rattles the very fabric of time itself.
