Anthony Lanier sacked Blaine Gabbert and forced a fumble that Preston Smith recovered and the Washington Redskins held on to beat the Arizona Cardinals 20-15 Sunday in a game that was a comedy of errors for each team.
Smith also intercepted Gabbert and Lanier batted down three passes and had two sacks as they gave the Redskins (6-8) a glimpse of their potential as significant pieces of the defense for years to come.
Redskins finally win again, thanks to big defensive plays late.
They didn't magically fix all that has ailed them this season, but the Redskins' victory over Arizona on Sunday should prove good for their psyche.
Cardinals inefficiency in red zone leads to playoff elimination.
The problems plaguing the offense Sunday were emblematic of the entire season: Arizona couldn't capitalize, and the playoffs are now out of reach.
Gabbert was 16 of 41 for 189 yards with the interception and a fumble he recovered himself in the fourth quarter. Arizona (6-8), which got all its points on field goals by Phil Dawson, went 0 for 6 in the red zone and 4 for 19 on third down as it was eliminated from playoff contention.
Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins was 18 of 26 for 196 yards with touchdown passes to Jamison Crowder and new running back Kapri Bibbs. The Redskins were booed at times in the second half by fans in the announced crowd of 71,026.
Gabbert led the Cardinals to the Washington 21-yard line before an incomplete pass on fourth down ended their chances.
DRIVE FOR FIVE
Dawson made all five of his field goal attempts, connecting from 40, 35, 19, 34 and 32 yards. He was good from 54 early in the fourth quarter, though that was wiped out when Washington's A.J. Francis was given a 15-yard penalty for leverage.
SACKMASTER JONES
Arizona linebacker Chandler Jones earned his NFL-leading 15th sack of the season during the first half as he continued to make a case to be NFL Defensive Player of the Year. With two games remaining, he's two shy of setting the franchise record for sacks in a season.
RECOVERED KICK
Even though coach Bruce Arians didn't call for an onside kick to start the second half, the Cardinals got the ball back in excellent field position. Dawson's kickoff bounced deep in Washington territory and when no Redskins player fielded it, Budda Baker recovered at the 22.

Great Teacher Acharya Dharmakīrti
The eminent teacher Dharmakīrti was born in southern India. From an early age he studied all non-Buddhist philosophical systems. By the age of 16–18 he had fully mastered the fields of knowledge of the non-Buddhist schools.
One day, upon encountering some of the Buddha’s texts, he realized that his own teacher was subject to shortcomings and that his doctrines were contradictory. He gained a strong faith in the Buddha and his teaching, and took lay vows.
Traveling to central India, he took monastic vows from the teacher Dharmapāla. There Dharmakīrti studied and became well-versed in the Tripiṭaka. Upon first hearing the teaching of the Compendium of Valid Cognition from the teacher Ishvara Sena, a disciple of Dignāga, he reached the level of understanding of his teacher.
Hearing the text a second time, he equaled Dignāga himself in understanding. On the third occasion, he found errors in his teacher’s explanations and clarified them in detail for him.
When Dharmakīrti finished his meditation and practice on his yidam deity, Heruka appeared before him in a vision and asked what he desired. The Acharya replied that he wished to be victorious in all directions of the world. Heruka declared: “Ha, ha, hum!” and vanished.
The non-Buddhist Śaṅkarācārya summoned monks from Nalanda University for debate. Acharya Dharmakīrti, defending the honor of the University, won a complete victory over Śaṅkarācārya, who then threw himself into the Ganges and drowned. Śaṅkarācārya’s disciples continued to debate Dharmakīrti in three subsequent rebirths, but Dharmakīrti defeated them each time and converted them to Buddhism.
Seven well-known treatises on epistemology are attributed to the great Dharmakīrti.
Hard disk errors pop up when I try to install Ubuntu on my Mac via Bootcamp. This tells me I should get a new hard disk.
The signwriter stepped back to admire his creation.
And at once he saw the error!
He groaned and hung his head. What to do?
He stood for a moment, then looked about him.
No-one else was in sight. Quickly he packed up, claimed
the envelope of cash from the uncaring barmaid, and drove off.
For a week or more, the signwriter jumped whenever his phone rang. But it was never the pub calling him to account.
It seemed that either nobody had noticed, or nobody cared.
Gradually the memory faded.
In fact, a couple of months later, the signwriter wasn't
recognised when he visited the pub with his famile.
