Ubuntu kept freezing at different points during installation and/or updating. Now I can't even get the install CD to run. Decided to run a MEMTEST and I'm getting errors. Looks like I might need to exchange the RAM. (Anyone care to confirm my diagnosis?)

The guys from BCNeta have been making the city too gray in the last few days and this fatal error message has been invoked in different areas:

The electronic front curtain shutter of the A77 removes the motion of the mechanical front curtain shutter as a source of camera shake. But does this make any difference in practice? This is a central crop to show detail resolution of a full size ex-camera jpeg of Edinburgh Castle at a distance of 2.5km. The camera's central point AF, which seems reasonably accurate for this lens, is focused on the top of the central flagpole tower. The only editing applied has been a global contrast boost and jpeg compression to reduce file size. The camera jpeg settings used were Neutral mode with all adjustments zero.

The sharper detail resolution of the central flagpole in the electronic shutter shots is plainly visible. Could this be a focusing error? To check that I took a few shots with each shutter. All the electronic shutter versions were sharper than the mechanical shutter shots. There was some very slight variation in focus visible, but not nearly as much as the difference between the mechanical shutter shots and the electronic shutter shots. Could processing from RAW pull out more detail? Sharpening from RAW or of these jpegs does pull out more detail, more from the electronic shutter shots. But the important easily visible point is that the difference is easily visible in plain unadjusted ex-camera jpegs.
In doing these experiments I've come to suspect there may be a very slight back focus in my A77's AF with this lens. But since the AF is consistently sharper than my best attempts at manual focusing I'll leave experimental micro focus adjustments for later.
