I was expecting to document (albeit amateur) a flurry of activity complete with protesters and same-sex couples, but what I found were families, gay men's choir, and dozens of happy couples--all closely watched over by men-in-uniform.
The first Global Forum on Youth Policies took place in Baku, Azerbaijan on 28-30 October 2014.
The First Day of the Forum was opened by Ahmad Alhendawi, Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, United Nations delivering a speech on “The urgency of progressing youth policies globally”. The opening session featured high-level speakers from the United Nations and the host government as well as voices of young people and stakeholders of the First Global Forum on Youth Policies.
H.E. Azad Rahimov, Minister of Youth and Sports, Azerbaijan, Mr. Magdy Martínez-Solimán, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the Bureau for Policy and UNDP Programme Support, Ms. Lalla Aïcha Ben Barka, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, Ms. Snežana Samardžić-Marković, Council of Europe’s Director-General of Democracy, Mr. Bashar Hobbi, Global Youth Ambassador and Ms. Greta Rios, Ollin, Jóvenes en Movimiento (Youth in Motion) participated at the opening session. A video message by H.E. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations was shown to the participant.
In a plenary session moderated by Mr. Magdy Martínez-Solimán, the participants of the Global Forum discussed the achievements and challenges of 20 years period after the adoption of the World Programme of Action for Youth.
Participants continued to discuss the issue tabled in a plenary meeting in small thematic sessions.
Thematic sessions of the first day of the Forum dedicated to “Education” (moderated by UNESCO, UNICEF), “Employment & Entrepreneurship” (ILO, UNIDO), “Peace and Security” (PBSO, SFCG), “Health” (UNAIDS, UNFPA, WHO), “Participation” (UNDP, UNFPA, UNDESA, Council of Europe), “ Volunteerism” (UNV), “Environment” (YOUNGO, YOUTHPOLICY.ORG), “Gender Equality” (UN Women, UNDP, UNFPA), “Justice” (UNDP), “Urbanization and Housing” (UN HABITAT), “Information and Communication Technologies” (UNDPI, UNDP) and “Leisure” (UNESCO).
Participants of the first Global Forum on Youth Policies were welcomed in an official reception of the Forum at Buta Palace.

On Wednesday, March 7th, Equality Charter School held a day of Professional Development for its teachers and faculty members. All staff took part in an English Language Arts data meeting. Staff worked together to analyze student performance data and to agree on common strategies to address scholars’ deficiences and support scholars’ strengths. It was a rewarding day of community building for staff to come together and focus on a common cause – scholar literacy and student achievement.

Did you know that the 1st of September was the International Bacon Day?
And that it is celebrated around the World by bacon lovers in all sorts of food-eating events?
We believe, that this day of awareness should be centred on the industry itself, and what it really means to the billions of animals slaughtered every year.
For this reason Animal Equality was out on the street in Covent Garden (London), showing and handing out information about the realities of the pig industry, as well as giving out free vegan samples.
Over 400 sandwiches filled with "vegan bacon" and "ham style" slices were given out to a very interested crowd and 2.000 "Something to eat or someone to respect" leaflets were distributed, explaining that animal exploitation exists because of consumers demand, and that we can stop this by choosing a diet free of animal products.
We want to thank Redwood foods for supporting this event, as they donated their amazing and yummy products. A special thank you as well, to all the dedicated activists who took part at the event, inspiring people that a world without animal suffering is possible.
