After exiting the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, we were waiting for our car to arrive, which had been parked elsewhere due to restrictions outside the facility. While waiting, my guide pointed to these orange bikes run by Mobike which are for hire. Using an app on your phone (which you have to download) to unlock the bike, you can ride it to anywhere inside downtown Shanghai and then leave it at a similar Mobike stand at your destination. Payment is arranged by swiping the app with rates for different time slabs. I found China to be quite advanced that way. The next day, when I'd met my friends here and traveled with them to Huangzhou, the paid all taxi fares ad food expenses using Alipay (they also have Wechatpay) where they simply scan the app on their smartphone over a QR code in the taxi or restaurant to get a beep in confirmation that the money has been deducted from their account. It is Summer here and the girls thought they would show you some of their energy efficient ways of keeping cool - better for the environment than switching on the Air Con!
Audrey (top LH) is making a big jug of cool drink with lots of ice cubes in it ... (though we should point out that hanging about the fridge with the door open is not energy efficient (and will actually make the room warmer)).
Bunny (lower LH) is showing you how we keep the pet bunny's hutch cool, by draping a wet towel over her hutch.
And Violetta (on the RH side) is keeping cool by hanging a wet hand-towel around her neck and putting her hands (and wrists) in cold water. If you put a wet cold towel around anywhere that your blood vessels are close to the surface - this will drop your temperature.

The urinals in the Foy Building are green because they don't use water but instead let urine flow in the drain which reduces not only water usage but reduce utility costs and bathroom odor as well.
A subtle environmental message on the rapidly increasing water consumption. This is contrasted by the lush green grass in the background.

4 lovely old curtains fully re-lined, new tapes etc
was such a nice feeling to give these a new life - although faded in parts they are lovely drapes. And curtains like this are great for temperature & light control - they'll keep the warmth in a room during winter and block the heat & bright sun-light in summer ... much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than air-conditioning
It was a startling revelation to me that America is actually a little behind (excuse the pun) when it comes to toilet technique. I aim to correct this situation in 2011. If you have never heard of the "handheld bidet" or personal sprayer, it's time to learn. The money you'll save and the improvements you gain will pay you back in < 1 year. Imagine if we all switched to a bidet and just used the TP to dry up? (another thing I learn in India). Learn more here: bit.ly/eD2KsD and check it out on Amazon here: amzn.to/gELpaK. Total setup time was 20 minutes.

I later saw the electric bus in another part of the Hanoi old quarter. It was not well filled, but the passengers riding on the rear seat look outwards, so that would have meant for a very interesting perspective if you are a keen photographer. Next time, I will ride the electric bus for sure, if I can figure out how to get to it from my hotel at that time. (Hanoi, Vietnam, Oct./ Nov. 2016)

I crochetd this purse as a project for the Art Gallery of Swift Current, where I have a few items on display for July 2011. I used wool yarn with angelina fiber, that I got at a garage sale to crochet drink can tabs and the tabs off cat food tins in a different style than I ususally make my tab bags. The strap is overlapped can tabs.
With this type of 'Bag for Life' costing around 5p each ... these folks have spent a right few bob, and just in this one trolley load ..
Madness!

Not just healthful but super easy as well!
The ice cream is made from very ripe bananas (fair trade and organic -- seriously it is important as "Banana Republic" is not a clothing store, nor trendy!), pushed through a greenstar/champion style juicer with the blank plate (though this could also be done in a Vitamix or Food Processor just a little differently). Then to give it a little interest and color some frozen marionberries were added but all kinds of healthy adds are possible here (coconut is divine!). This is dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free, chemical and preservative-free, and organic. Just two ingredients both of which add to the 5 to 9 a day goal.
So, the brownies underneath are not nut-free but they are simple and still rather healthful especially in comparison to the the usual. These are simply walnuts (omega 3 powerhouses), dates and raw cacao in roughly equal amounts, run in the food processor until it forms a ball then pressed in a pan, put in the fridge to set, then cut into serving pieces.
Yummy, indulgent, pretty and easy without breaking the diet... even with seconds.
NO ADDED PROCESSED SUGAR! :D
Dairy-free, Soy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free... and free of pesticides, herbicides and other biocides that add to our "Body Burden" and ill-health.

8x10 picture frame made from reclaimed maple flooring.
The wood in this frame came from the floor of the former John Deere factory in Syracuse NY. The building was approximately 100 years old. ReUse Action was contracted to remove the wooden beams and flooring from the warehouse before it was demolished.
Several thousand square feet of hard maple flooring was recovered and re-sold to be used as beautiful reclaimed flooring in residential housed.
We used a few pieces of this flooring to create this picture frame. The wood shows its age and experience: years of farmer's boots shuffling across it, machines dragged across it, sacks of feed and probably even animal marks on it.
This frame was made of part of the floor that was never painted and part of the floor that had been painted red. Both show the wear and tear of the feed and seed warehouse.
We love all these random marks and patina that simply cannot be duplicated artificially.
This frame embodies our eco philosophy. Most components are reclaimed materials. The glass is salvaged from old stock or from window sashes. Only the glaziers points biscuits and carpenter's glue are new materials. Each is coated with Minwax water based urethane.
In the scheme these crafts make a miniscule difference in the fate of the environment. However building materials comprise the largest part of landfills. Anaerobically rotting wood and other organic components contribute significantly to climate change by releasing methane as a byproduct.

This terminal is not just pretty to look at. It is also designed for efficiency. See the black rectangular box? That is a trash can, but not a typical trash can. It is an automatic trash compactor and there are 55 of them placed around the new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal at the Atlanta Airport. Each holds 8-12 bags of trash, saving on labor, hauling, and trash liners. Plus, customers will never get sight of over-flowing trash.
