Earlstoun dam is an important component of the highly influential Galloway Hydroelectric Power Scheme, providing daily storage capacity and flow regulation for Earlstoun power station. The dam combines both gravity and arch sections, with the gravity section providing the necessary abutment for the arched section to the centre. The dam has a fixed spillway for automatic regulation of the level of water and further roller gates to the gravity section. There is also a regulation valve to the arched section. The water is fed out into an aqueduct which takes it to the penstocks above Earlstoun power station. The Galloway scheme was a significant technological achievement and the first example of run of the river technology to be successfully utilised on a large scale in Scotland.
The architectural design of Earlstoun Dam is of a distinctively modern style, with the clean sweeping lines of the wave-wall and the synthesis of features such as corbel brackets to the control tower characterising the modern, dynamic attitude with which hydroelectricity was viewed in this period.
The development of the Galloway Hydroelectric Scheme predates the 1943 Hydroelectric (Scotland) Act which formalised the development of Hydroelectricity in Scotland and led to the founding of the North of Scotland Hydroelectric Board. Those developments which predated the 1943 act were developed by individual companies as a response to particular market and topographic conditions. The completion of a number of schemes without a national strategic policy framework is groundbreaking as is the consistency of high quality aesthetic and engineering design across all of the schemes.
The Galloway scheme was influential on the future development of hydropower in Scotland. After initial opposition to the parliamentary act granting powers for the completion of the scheme it was approved with a number of safeguards on the landscape and amenity of the area. This necessitated the high quality design of both power stations and dams which characterises the Galloway scheme. This condition also proved influential during the drafting of the Hydroelectric (Scotland) Act of 1943 where the visual impact of future schemes was a primary concern.
Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners was a pioneering engineering company, responsible for a number of high profile works in Scotland, including the Kincardine Bridge. The company was founded by Alexander Gibb in 1921 and quickly became the UK's largest firm of consulting engineers with numerous international clients. Gibb was personally involved in the design and construction of the Galloway scheme, and the pioneering nature of the Galloway development is due, in large part, to his abilities as an engineer. Merz and McLellan were pioneering British electrical engineers and developed a high profile practice, working on a number of power stations across Britain, including Dunstan B, as well as completing hydroelectric work in Italy in the 1980s.
It is trend these days by resorting to cycling to reduce pollution in the city, exercise and saving money. This is today’s mentality. In the background, blue canvas is a home for the homeless. Homelessness has increased in multiple folds in recent times but at the same time becoming richer in their possessions. On the other hand, the richer becomes poorer relinquishing their possessions to homeless people - of course it is put into good use. And bridging the gap. However, the super wealthy have gone untouchable. It is a wonder where today’s trend is heading to in the future ?
Thank you for viewing. If you like please fav and leave a nice comment. Hope to see you here again. Have a wonderful day 😊

It hasn't been mowed yet this year, and they haven't used herbicides to destroy the beautiful dandyflowers!
One of the two windmills in Skerries. I have been to Skerries many times since I moved to Swords nearby 41 years ago and never saw these mills before. When I went there this time they were closed so now I have a reason to return!
Information: The Mill complex comprises a watermill, 5-sail windmill, 4-sail windmill and associated mill races, mill pond and wetlands. The history of the mills can be traced to the 16th century. A bakery was also established on the site by 1840. All three mills have been restored to working order by F.Á.S. and Fingal County Council and are open to visitors throughout the year.
The mills in Skerries demonstrate an efficient and clean use of water and wind power and are a rare survival of 17th, 18th and 19th century industrial history. Indoors: Visitors can see how the watermill works and view exhibits of milling equipment; mill stones, elevators, shakers, blowers, winnowers. Bright and sunlit tea-rooms and a well stocked craft shop are located on the first floor of the four-storey watermill building. Outdoors: A mill race runs from the mill pond along the edge of the cornfield to turn the waterwheel. Dominating the landscape however, are the two windmills, the 5-sail Great Windmill of Skerries and the older thatched 4-sail mill.

My efforts to replace the grass in my front yard is paying off with some thriving local wildflower species, as shown by this new photo. It is a work in progress with plans for planting some fall bulbs, flowering bushes, ornamental grasses and fruit trees to create a diverse environment habitat friendly to birds, bees and butterflies.

A late Valentine to everyone from me and this cute little wood hippo I got from Anamalz.
I wanted to see just how much color I could get out of 600 film so I bought some fluorescent craft paper and used it for a backdrop. The paper was bright pink but it obviously came out more purplish. Still, I was surprised how vivid it turned out.

Electric scooters can pose as an environmentally friendly alternative personal mode of transportation that has appeal in urban settings and for short distances. As electric scooters become more popular in urban and high traffic settings, user safety poses a major concern alongside other health risks for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children sharing the road. All riders should use helmets.

Arriva North East held a unique and innovative marketing publicity launch on October 14th 2014 to mark the £1.3 million investment into Jesmond's 306 service, which operates between Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, North Shields, Coast Road and Newcastle. Sand artists created a marvellous image in the sand - taking just under five hours to construct - which attracted the attention of many passers-by. The brand new vehicles were also in attendance, with the doors being opened to allow members of the public to be some of the very first people to look around the new buses. A small picnic was also had on-board one of the buses, with coffee also being handed out to warm everyone up.
Eight brand new Wright Streetlite DF/Wright Streetlite Micro-Hybrid vehicles have been purchased by Arriva for their 306 service which is based at Jesmond depot. The vehicles all have comfortable e-leather seating, and are Wi-Fi enabled. These vehicle are a Micro-Hybrid version of the Wright Streetlite, which is 11.5m in length. I've often mentioned that I work at RONA, which is a Canadian competitor to Home Depot and Lowes.
When I was growing up, our family business (Pleasant View Farms) was engaged in the wholesale and retail sales of farm and landscaping/nursery supplies: hardware, fencing, pesticides, plants, hay/straw for bedding, containers, firewood, seed, clothing, paint and on and on.
In 2002, after many years in various endeavours (museums, teaching English, marketing, I was accepted in the seasonal department at RONA, where I employed the skills and knowledge that I had garnered so many years before at Pleasant View Farms.
If you visit while I'm at RONA, you'll likely find me in the greenhouse and/or garden centre. I also spend a good deal of time on the seasonal hardware floor.
It's just part-time... a day or two a week, but it suits nicely.

EXPLORED ! Thank you !
I salute the new flickr features (except the one "bug" mentioned below and the api program) for some of the things they've changed and for the fact that I find Flickr to be finally honest (maybe not even intentionally but hopefully entirely... see below).
Model's name: Stephie
Make-up : StephieAbout the image :)
This is very much about me but as always I asked Stephie to model for me as me to illustrate how every day I destroy a tree or something close to that with all my paper towels, tissues and stuff ...every second of every day. I'm allergic on flower pollen, dust and any other stuff that I can be allergic at so you can imagine :D
The new features came also with a huge disadvantage, the so called "the bug" witch permitted to anyone to save up to Large size (1024 x 683) if available ;) So far they worked on the right click on some browsers but on the IE8 you are still able to save all sizes available. As it is right now the images are not protected not even from a grandma if I may say like this. So, that is why I feel that it's time for a change and in exchange for more watermarks I'll upload BIGGER SIZES :) just for now.
My Original Upload size is 1200 x 800 so if you opted in with the new features from flickr at the "All available sizes "this is the size you'll get. But also make sure you aren't signed out.
The large size (Large (1024 x 683) ) was in fact available since May 26 but we (I) just didn't know about it...( Well in my case not really a problem because I uploaded small sizes) .
I knew about the API program that allowed the medium size (my larger option any way) to be available for designers and others who were able to use the program but I had no idea about the large size availability.
Why is this "bug" such a big deal?
Consider that Getty is licensing images much smaller then the 1024px for quite some $$$ money. For instance a minuscule image of
135 x 170 px (1.88 x 2.36 in.) - 72 dpi - RGB its sold with EUR 5,00-15'00
In other words the 1024px in stock industry it's huge these days and we are talking royalty free license not right managed. I knew about Facebook for example that is (wrongfully) reserving worldwide and nonexclusive rights to license (IP License) our images or videos and stuff like that but I thought that these are not things that flickr would do.. We'll see what happens ... also I'm wondering about Getty's reaction to the new availabilities.
I always uploaded small sizes but I'll try this new way of protecting the images from download now with the new flickr features. I also always signed my images and now when I know it was so little protection even on flick I feel good I did at least that. For now like I'll upload large (1200px to be precise) and just extend the level of watermarks in return :) ENJOY !
BTW
have you seen how little activity on the photostreams there is and how much fuss is at the group discussions / topics ? LOL Flicker its always like this. Never boring I guess :)
Comcast Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
At 58 stories and 974 ft, the Comcast Center is the tallest building in Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania. It is the nineteenth tallest building in the United States. The skyscraper was designed by achitect Robert A. M. Stern for Liberty Property Trust. The Center's lobby features the "Comcast Experience", a 2,000 square feet high-definition LED screen that in this photo shows a baseball player.
This time of year I am always dodging cyclists on the road and that can be hazardous, but cycling is "environmentally friendly!"

This is a set of alphabet cards that I made for my daughters who are learning how to read and spell (the older one) and identify letters (the younger one). Both are hands-on, visual learners. The four picture cards on the corners are either ATCs or ACEOs.
Each card is the standard ATC/ACEO size (2 1/2" x 3 1/2") and is made with 100% sheep wool. The letter and background are both needlefelted with a single barbed needle onto a white wool base.
I use a rather eclectic approach for homeschooling, and like aspects of both the Waldorf and Montessori philosophies.
This combines the Waldorf aspect in that the item is made from all-natural, beautiful materials.
It is a modification of the Montessori aspect in that rather than working with wooden shapes of letters as a child learns her/his alphabet, reads, and spells, the child works with the image in wool.
For those who enjoy trading ATCs, if you are interested in trading one of your textile or needlefelted cards for one of my needlefelted ones, please comment below or email me.

Oh Lush...you soothe the savage beast...(or you make her sneeze).
I love this store. I'm a bit of a fanatic about this stuff, it's basically body product crack. So addictive. Me: "But I only have four soaps at home, I need these other three TOOO." I don't know what it is, but these people have it down. The tough part is being in the store, if you're sensitive at all, the sheer volume of scent is really overwhelming.
This solid shampoo is awesome too since it doesn't come in a plastic container, and you can use it forever (months). So while it's a bit pricey, you're not paying for a ton of water and chemicals in a plastic bottle you have to recycle at the end.
Yeah, environment!
