Anyone in London should make a point of visiting the Photographers Gallery where there is an exhibition by Keith Arnatt until 2nd September.
He has a series of shots taken at a waste tip that just completly blew my mind as to their beauty. This of course is NOT taken by him :)

Environmentally Friendly Lego. Go Green! (hippy)
Let's put back the "mental" in environmental.
"Toy Story" Toy Soldier from Lego set 7595 with BrickArms Army Men Weapons Pack.
The Green Bin is from the 2010 Lego City Repair Truck Set 3197.
The Green Bandanna was something I randomly found in my BrickLink journeys.
The BrickArm in the minifig's right hand is a grenade launcher which can be attached via u-clip to a variety of Brickarm Weapons. In this frame I've given it another use - aerosol can.

The sun uses three different colors of wool that has been hand-dyed yellow, with one of the colors being hand-blended with other complementary colors (flecks of orange and various shades of yellow).
The rays use an incredibly soft wool that is vivid gold.
The background uses two different colors of red wool. One is wool that has been hand-dyed a solid red. The other is a blend of reds and oranges.
The base is white, 100% sheep wool.
The design and background of the card are needlefelted with a single barbed needle.
It is the standard size (2 1/2" x 3 1/2") and is made with 100% sheep wool.

Where we live, there is currently a great deal of hullabaloo about supermarkets and single use plastic bags.
Audrey wishes to show everyone that it is perfectly possible to use bags over & over again. You can even cut up those single use bags and crochet a reusable 'string' bag from them !!

Solar Sailor
Solar Sailor: solar-powered boats
Solar Sailor's unique "Hybrid Power System" (HPS) for marine applications is a world first with patents in USA, Australia, NZ and Turkey and pending in 22 other countries including China, Japan and Europe.
The system uses energy from renewable sources such as the sun and wind and combines these with stored energy from batteries and fossil fuel. The system is controlled by a computer to provide ships with power that is operationally efficient, quiet, and environmentally friendly.
The Solar Sailor technology is now being adapted for a variety of marine applications such as eco-tourism, tourism, urban transport, leisure and cargo ships.
The Solar Sailor technology has been proven in a commercial tourist vessel with operation of the 100-passenger Sydney Solar Sailor since June 2000 by Captain Cook Cruises on Sydney Harbour.
The Solar Sailor Hybrid Power System is superior to conventional marine power in terms of lower operating costs (fuel savings and maintenance); zero water pollution; significant reductions in air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions; and greater passenger comfort through reduced noise, vibration and noxious odour emissions.
The Hybrid Power System is so efficient because:
•Incorporates free solar and wind power abundant on the water.
•No gearboxes
•No auxillary generators
•Always generator at optimum revs/efficiency
Since its launch, the Sydney Solar Sailor and the Solar Sailor® concept have received a number of industry awards for design, environmental attributes and technology. These include:
•2001 Australian Design Award of the Year – Engineering
•2000 International Cargo Handling Co-ordination Association (ICHCA) Awards – Outstanding Proven Initiative in Cargo Handling
•2000 Boating industry Association of Australia (BIA) Marine Awards – Best New Product
•1999 Far Eastern Economic Review/Du Pont Asian Innovation Award – Gold Medal
•1997 Advanced Technology Boat Race Canberra Australia – Major Prize
The Solar Sailor technology has been developed with assistance and support from the Australian Greenhouse Office, a department of the Australian Federal Government; the Australian Technology Showcase, an initiative of the New South Wales State Government; BP Solar; Panasonic Australia; University of Technology Sydney (UTS); CI Technologies Pty Ltd, (Citect); and Elgas.

This allotment holder has come up with an environmentally friendly way of dealing with unwanted visitors
The Helmsley Building at 230 Park Avenue is now lit every night with an energy efficient, color changing, computer-controlled LED light system. The new lighting system is highly programmable. The LED lights are on the entire northern face and the crown of the building. In an effort to reinvent the building, the lighting exterior can, and will, go from tame to wild depending on the season.
The new lighting makes the building stand out and visible from 40 blocks away. It also sends an important message that if older, historic and iconic buildings can take drastic measures to become environmentally friendly, there's no reason why every other building can't do the same.
In 2010, after a more than $100 million renovation, 230 Park became the first pre-war office building in New York to earn Gold Leed status, an internationally recognized designation for being an environmentally friendly building.

This is an interactive ACEO (Art Cards Editions Originals). (The original was gone within a couple of hours of posting it. I made another one and it is now available in my shop.) Please see my Flickr profile for the link to my shop.
The finger puppet and the card itself are all hand-embroidered. The panda is attached to the card by velcro so it can easily come off and be used...and then placed back on the card for a safe place to call "home." The bamboo leaves are sewn onto the felt card.
The card and puppet are made with 100% wool felt. Cotton floss is used to blanket-stitch the puppet as well as the card together.
This ACEO is a wonderful, sensory learning tool for children who love art; and who enjoy imaginary play and puppets.
ACEOs are the perfect size for little hands to play with and enjoy...especially those who love to experience art and learn through the sense of touch.
Blogged here: harvestmoonbyhand.blogspot.com/2008/08/interactive-art.html
in the school, gardens, there is a rather interesting greenhouse made of plastic bottles - what a great way of recycling!
This is the second interactive ATC I've made that features a finger puppet attached to the card. (The first was the ATC that had the panda finger puppet on it).
This card is made with 100% wool felt and cotton floss.
The unicorn puppet is my own design. It can stay on the card or it can be removed and played with...and then returned it its "home."
The entire card is hand-stitched/embroidered using either the blanket-stitch or straight stitch.
An ACEO version of this card (in different colors for the eye, mane, and background) is available. Please see my Flickr profile for more information. If you click 2 pictures to the right (see above) you'll see the one that is available.
This card was traded through Swap-Bot on a Unicorn ATC Swap that I hosted. It was sent to kasade in LA. Made another version of this card and did a private trade through Swap-Bot with Purdyeyes on August 14, 2008.

A day in a Junkyard
Salahuddin Ahmad, Melbourne Polytechnic, Victoria, Australia.
Either it is an accident or beyond its age, our carefully handled favorite car gets old, damaged, rusty, abandoned or impounded and becomes unwanted. It then finds a temporary shelter in a junkyard. A junkyard is also known as a car wrecker, a place where damaged or old vehicles are broken up and recycled to obtain useable parts and scrap metal.
Junkyards make a significant contribution to the economy. It is estimated that the vehicle attrition rate in Australia is 4.1% which is approximately 700,000 vehicles a year and produces 980,000 tonnes of waste each year. Thus, it requires a significant amount of workforce involvement to safely dispose of these vehicles as well as sustain the growth of this industry.
Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, a junkyard in Springvale, Victoria is a busy place full of activity throughout the day. People come here to sell their unwanted cars as scrap metal or collect recyclable parts from the damaged vehicles. There are 3 multi-dismantling machines, 2 forklifts, 6 trucks and 4 automotive lifts in operation with 36 shift workers to operate and run the business.
The Junkyard offers an environmentally friendly place to dispose of unused and unwanted vehicles. These unwanted cars contain toxic battery acids, toxic chemicals, engine oils, and other fluids which can cause long-term damage to soils, water, and air quality. To minimize the environmental impacts, the most environmentally friendly way is to dispose of them in a junkyard with authorized operators.
Location: Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, Springvale, Victoria, Australia.
