We're midway through the judging at the DFJ Venture Challenge today…
Here you see a UC Davis team demonstrating light-dimming demand response to help reduce utility blackouts.
From numerous entrants to the business plan competition, 18 teams presented this morning, and now six finalists are presenting extended versions of their pitch, and fielding questions from the VC judging panel.
It was a very tough call… and we were trying to reduce to five finalists:
• UW has two finalists: Athleon and Impel Neuropharma (drug delivery via the upper nasal cavity to better cross the blood-brain barrier)
• Stanford: Cascade Clean Energy (Microbial Fuel Cell for waste water treatment and energy generation)
• UCLA: CityMedia (novel social meeting places for the Indian market)
• UCSD: NeuroVigil (simpler brainwave monitoring for sleep disorder diagnosis)
• UC Davis: Advanced Enological Closures (better screwcaps for wine!)
Good luck to all!

There are some great pieces of art based on animals this year. This piece is called "Unuscornu". It looks like a cross between a Unicorn and Bull.
Some crazy light art at Wheal Peevor tonight - a HUGE thank you to Sam for her hard work in this one - managing to clamber over waist high walls, while twirling a light baton, without breaking any bones, is a real trial for our marriage!

I am searching for abstract ways of expressing reality, abstract forms that will enlighten my own mystery. - Eric Cantona
I like the colours here, even though I wish the focus was more crisp. None the less. I have my camera back! But I need to get myself bundled up to go outside. The weather has taken a turn for the worse and it is dreadfully cold and the type of cold that has a nasty bite to it.
Can't remember the name of the church but simply beautiful. The reason for the trompe l'oeil on the ceiling might have been to do with budget cuts.
"O Rising Sun, splendour of eternal light and blazing Sun of justice, come to bring light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death."

The oculus of the Pantheon in Rome admits light into the great dome, just as Christ's holy and liberating light now enlightens what was once a pagan temple without any knowledge of Him who is the Light of the world. May his holy light always shine in our lives too.
It's dark,
your cells are stars,
your blood, my liquid sky.
If it flows, I feel I could drown,
my thoughts dissolving.
Quick,
help me out,
this world is just too small for me;
they made it shrink with narrow minds:
shortsighted fools
always cause
longterm decay.
Slow,
help me find
the right place,
the relativity of a time and space
where I can be myself
measuring my actions
on a human scale.
Sit,
we need to talk
of sex and politics,
of our children,
- with no haste -
in a world gone hazy.
Come,
let us find
our forgotten fondness for freedom
so that conformity/uniformity
will not define
the contours of my body,
the acuteness of your sight.
In lightness,
we need pure light.
