Cracking Bones Session, Thursday, June 25.

Colin Hart, 11, checks out bones being crashed during the Cracking Bones Workshop at the University of Michigan.

Learn about the types of cells and proteins found in bones and their roles in bone strength. We’ll compress and bend bones under different conditions to discover how strong bones are, what can affect their strength, and how to strengthen your own!

As part of some of my internship responsabilities I was able to assist bridge inspections throughout the state of Maryland. The farthest you can go within Maryland is to Cumberland, approximately a 2 and a half hour drive from Baltimore through I-70 and I-68. These are a few pictures from this trip.

the College’s namesake, Fritz Russ, passed away recently, and we have many artifacts from his estate that would make an interesting display or portion of the exhibit. These are things such as a photo album he created as an engineer working on Bikini Atoll prior to WW2, when the atomic bomb was being tested. Also, we have his wallet with all of his old ID cards back to the 40s and 50s.

Adrian Helmerci (center) and Erika Chen (left), robotics students, test their "ball-bot" design during Robotics 311 in the Ford Robotics Building on North Campus, Ann Arbor, MI, on December 3, 2024.

Robotics 311: How to Build Robots and Make Them Move, was co-taught this semester by Professors Greg Formosa and Xiaonan (Sean) Huang. This upper-level undergraduate course provides an in-depth introduction to the key principles of robotic system design and development. Students explore the fundamentals of mechanical design, fabrication, actuation, instrumentation, digital communication, and control, essential skills for realizing functional robots. The course emphasizes both hands-on experience and theoretical learning, culminating in the design and creation of a unique "ball-bot" — a wheeled robot balanced on a basketball that students must control for both stability and steering. Students gain expertise in analyzing and simulating rigid body kinematics, kinetics, and dynamics, while also evaluating the impedance characteristics of their robotic designs.

The School of Science, Engineering, and Technology in partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers - Penn State Harrisburg Chapter, hosted the TE Connectivity Lecture Series STEM Forward: Minorities in Engineering, a presentation by Dr. Guion Bluford Jr., the first African American Astronaut and Penn State alumnus. Dr. Bluford spoke about his space shuttle flights and the future of manned space flight and discussed the difficulties he faced as a minority in a STEM field, and gave insight on his journey obtaining a degree, and persevering and advancing in a STEM career.

In 1983, Dr. Guion “Guy” Bluford Jr. became the first African American to fly in space. He was also the first African American to return to space for a second, third, and fourth time, and to be awarded NASA’s coveted Astronaut Pin and the United States Air Force’s Command Pilot Astronaut Wings. He was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1997 and the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2010.
