I can't exactly explain the encapsulated satisfaction of walking a road you opened. The 150 meters from Granville Road to the burial ground called Mariner's Section was almost impenetrable when I started. What's now a one minute walk took fifteen scratching minutes on my first visit, then two straight days to cut it clear end to end. Now the way is wide and gentle, easy on the face and arms while you slip into history. As the leaves start to spread, it's more like a garden, a natural grove or parkland that just happens to house the dead. Don't let all that finality distract you, here lies life in all her glory. Under shimmering sun like some daydream, and evening is a time when I'm not sure where the borders of sleep lie. I might have drifted past the edge, pulled back to the road and whispered. Something about how all good memories are still worth making alone.

In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility -2 (SAEF- 2), the Mars Climate Orbiter (top) is lowered toward the third stage of the Boeing Delta II launch vehicle below it, to which it will be attached. The third stage is a solid-propellant Thiokol Star 48B booster, the same final stage used in the 1996 launch of Mars Global Surveyor. Targeted for launch on Dec. 10, 1998, the orbiter is heading for Mars where it will primarily support its companion Mars Polar Lander spacecraft, which is planned for launch on Jan. 3, 1999. The orbiter's instruments will monitor the Martian atmosphere and image the planet's surface on a daily basis for 687 Earth days. It will observe the appearance and movement of atmospheric dust and water vapor, as well as characterize seasonal changes on the surface. In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility-2 (SAEF-2), workers mate the Mars Polar Lander to the third stage of the Boeing Delta II rocket before it is transported to Launch Pad 17B, Cape Canaveral Air Station. The lander, which will be launched on Jan. 3, 1999, is a solar-powered spacecraft designed to touch down on the Martian surface near the northern-most boundary of the south pole in order to study the water cycle there. The lander also will help scientists learn more about climate change and current resources on Mars, studying such things as frost, dust, water vapor and condensates in the Martian atmosphere. It is the second spacecraft to be launched in a pair of Mars '98 missions. The first is the Mars Climate Orbiter, which was launched aboard a Delta II rocket from Launch Complex 17A on Dec. 11, 1998. My previous experiments with water drops on a glass plate did please me so much that I decided to extend my series galactic pictures. Light behavior between these drops is phenomenal spectacular! The only Photoshop activity to the pictures is exposure, saturation and overall color corrections. All pictures handheld & sunlight only.

Some refer to it as the Southern Turf Building and others call it "The Climax Building." Whatever the name, this old 19th century structure is notorious for its history in serving varous vices to patrons back in the day. Located in an area of downtown once known as "The Gentleman's Quarter" the first floor served the hard liqour. The second floor was reserved for gambling. The third floor had private rooms reserved for....... well, you know ..... the prostitutes that worked there. The building featured hidden sliding panels in the walls which opened up into secret rooms in case of a raid by the police but raids were not that common since both the police and the Mayor were regular patrons. However, with Carrie Nation's Temperance Movement gaining momentum these vices moved further undergound and not so out in the open. The Tennessean newspaper, which had been a leading lobbyist for prohibition of alcohol, purchased the building and moved inside in February 1916. Just as they were moving in the old bartender, Ike Johnson, stood in a room on the third floor - placed a pistol to his temple and pulled the trigger.

Lot 760.1 - This custom 1940 Oldsmobile Woody Wagon encapsulates everything that is great about a classic Woody, but has been comprehensively updated for performance, reliability and comfort. This Oldsmobile was single-family-owned from the time it was purchased new until it was sold to the previous owner and restorer in 2016. Because the car had been so lovingly cared for, it required almost no bodywork. The car was almost completely straight to begin with, and the panels all remain largely original. The same goes for the wood, which, although it has been completely taken apart, refinished and reassembled, remains 90% original to what was first placed on the car in 1940. While the car was taken apart, it was resprayed in a 3-stage PPG blue/gray hue, and all the chromework and stainless-steel trim was refinished. On the inside, everything was redone to original factory specifications, with upgrades such as a Vintage Air system and a stereo installed in the glove box. Under the hood is a 350ci Chevrolet Vortec V8 engine with some modest upgrades to provide plenty of passing power and a relaxed cruise on the highway. Backing up this engine is a Turbo 350 automatic transmission with a column shifter that sends power back to the Ford 8-inch rear end. The suspension has been upgraded with 2-way adjustable coilovers at all four corners and a Mustang II front end with independent suspension, plus upgraded power disc brakes. This Woody has won awards at multiple shows, including a Best of Show trophy at Woodies on the Lake in Lake Arrowhead, CA, in June 2018. A 6-page article written in 2018 by Woodie Times magazine features the details of the build even further. A copy is included with the sale, along with two sets of keys.

This year I was able to escape the snow and join Fred in Scottsdale for sunshine, cars, and music! I also drove down to Tucson to meet Doug for lunch and spend a nice evening visting with Richard and Lola.

Just beautiful: Autumn leaves encapsulated in ice. Later today the ice will have melted; but just now it looks like it'll be preserved forever.
Worth noting if you use the same camera as me (Sony Cyber-shot T500): In conditions like this, the metering will sometimes be a little fooled. Just a little, though, so if you want it just right you'll have to over- or underexposure to get it spot on (EV -1/3 in this case). The screen shows you the effect while you fiddle with the EV, so it's quite easy to get it just like you want.
