On a cold and misty autumnal morning, Saturday 5th October 2002, the unmistakable rhythm of a three-cylinder Pacific is heard setting off from its station stop, disturbing the tranquillity of this exclusive spa town of Bad Ems, located in the wooded valley on the River Lahn. DR Pacific 03 1010-2 soon makes it presence known as it emerges through the mist, passing the town's east signal box, rounding the curve and heading on towards Limburg, the 08:08 Koblenz to Giessen passenger service on the occasion of the 'Westerwald Plandampf'. Pacific 03 1010 was built in 1940 in streamlined form, which was removed after the war. Under the DR 'Rekolok' programme, it received a new boiler and was converted to oil-firing in the 1970s and it saw out the end of DR steam on the Berlin-Stralsund line in 1980, after which it was converted back to coal-burning and moved to a new home at Halle, as a 'Traditionslok'.
