Arms: Or, a riband enwreathed Azure and Gules between two bendlets of the Second each charged of a lion passant guardant Argent, armed and langued of the Third.

Crest: a demi bear rampant Azure, armed and langued Gules holding in the forepaws a spring of oak Proper fructed Or.

Motto: LEARN FROM THE PAST

All Emersons have bends on their shields. The riband enwreathed is because my mother's family name was Wilkie and all Wilkies have a fess enwreathed. So the fess enwreathed was turned through 45% to fit between the bendlets. Lions were chosen because I like animals and I also think that in heraldic art animals are very powerful charges (when well drawn). The crest of a demi bear rampant come from the arms of Warwick, the bear and ragged staff. The spring of oak is to represent the forest of Arden, which is also in Warwickshire (at least the remnants of it).

The painting is by Marco Foppoli.

A Cravens 2-car DMU rolls into Emerson Park Halt. The destination blind says 'Woolwich' (strictly North Woolwich, now closed) but actually the train is heading for Romford.

I've been very lucky lately. Many of the radios I've found have come with the box, accessories and owner's manual. Here's the presentation box for the Emerson 555 "All American"

One of London's ten least-used stations is now part of the London Overground

Emerson marketed the very popular "888" series of radios in the late 50's. All the names were inspired by the various U.S. rocket /satellite programs (pre-NASA). Here's the Explorer.

Designed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Explorer 1 satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral (Cape Kennedy) in Florida at

10:48 P.M. January 31st 1958. Several other successful Explorer missions followed.

Other Emerson 888 models were the Pioneer (and "Galaxy" variant), Vanguard, Atlas, Titan, Transtimer and Satellite.

If you continue browsing this photostream you will encounter most of them!

Circa 1959-60.

From the famous 888 series by Emerson, the Vanguard sported a real space age look. I like how both dials seem to be suspended on two "pod-like" objects.

The Vanguard rocket program was a Navy lead program designed to launch U.S. satellites into orbit. It wasn't a successful undertaking. Several rockets failed to launch and one exploded on the launch pad. The Emerson Vanguard radio was far more successful......Most still work and none exploded.

Emerson Electric. Makers of radios, fans, appliances, electric motors, sewing machines, powers tools, process equipment, and other electrical odds-and-ends. They were the first to sell an electric fan in 1892. Emerson once had a huge manufacturing facility in Jersey City NJ that employed thousands of workers (one of many all over the country). Over the years, Emerson grew by acquisition and diversified to become a huge multinational company.

Emerson still make ceiling fans, one of the products that goes back to the roots of the company. Chances are though, like everything else, they are made in China or some other country.

A chunky and oversized coat pocket radio. It doesn't have the same charm as the 888 series but it has a pretty cool name, the "Eldorado". I have no idea why Emerson would name a radio after the Spanish term for "the gilded one". Eldorado was a term used to describe a legendary city of great wealth, gold and jewels.

Maybe it was named after the Cadillac Eldorado? A chunky, oversized radio named after a chunky, oversized automobile....it's possible.

Take this radio out of it's plastic case and cover it with leather and you get the "Sportsman" model 990.

blew the dust off this one! this is the first radio i bought in 2006 when i started collecting plastic radios. an emerson model 870 NIB.

Specimen of Emerson, composited from photographs and scans of non-digital sources.

I felt a duty to create a Wikipedia page for this lovely but undervalued typeface.

How to tune into your Civil Defense (CD) stations........

CD marks appeared on radios manufactured or sold in the U.S. from 1953 to 1963.

Civil Defense was taken very seriously back then due to the communist “red scare” that permeated society.....much to the joy of Senator Joseph McCarthy I'm sure ;)

To counteract the potential for a Russian air attack on North America the US Government enacted the CONELRAD program. CONELRAD stood for CONtrol of ELectromagnetic RADiation. It’s purpose was to ensure that Russian aircraft wouldn’t be able to use U.S. broadcast stations for homing purposes. CONELRAD established two civil defense frequencies, 640 and 1240 kilohertz. During times of emergencies, all stations except the CONELRAD stations would cease operations, thus allowing the frightened "duck & cover" and panic stricken population to tune into the CD frequencies for information. CONELRAD was replaced in 1963 by the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS), and has since been replaced by the Emergency Alert System (EAS). I suppose the CONELRAD program was the Homeland Security of its’ day.

CD marks make for a quick and easy dating of collectible radios. If you see small

triangles or circles between the 6 & 7 and 10 &16 on the dial you can be sure that the radio predates 1963. Some Japanese radios made by Sharp and Hitachi during the late 50’s left off the CD marks.

The transistor radio was viewed as an essential device during the cold war -a must have for your bomb shelter........It was soon to be hi-jacked by teenagers and rock n roll music.
