Emerson 838 tube & transistor radio circa mid 1955.......
Before Hybrid cars there were Hybrid radios. In the mid 50's transistors were slowly making their way into the electronics industry, threatening the dominance of tube technology. Regency and Raytheon had already released their all transistor sets, Zenith Philco, G.E. and other American electronics giants were hard at work putting the finishing touches on theirs.
Emerson got on the solid state band wagon, well sort of, with this half and half radio.
The subminature tube compliment consisted of a 1V6, 1AH4, and 1AJ5. On the output stage were two RCA made transistors. Still, Emerson thought it would be impressive to market this 838 as a TRANSISTOR POCKET RADIO. Look closely below the Emerson name on the front of the cabinet. Deception and half-truths in product marketing?! Never!
This coat pocket portable sports a front facade that is entirely reverse painted, nice! The rest of the cabinet is a cherry red plastic.
The transistors are socketed and the chassis is handwired.
The box that housed this radio on store shelves claimed that it was "the world's first pocket radio". Questionable....I believe that honor could be awarded to the Belmont Boulevard, a subminature tube radio that was released in 1946.
Two years earlier in 1953 Emerson released the all tube model 747 using the same basic cabinet (6-3/8" wide, 3-3/4" tall, and 1-1/2" deep).
The last member of this family of Emerson radios was the 856. It utilized three subminiature tubes and two transistors as well. On the front of its cabinet was POCKET RADIO rather than TRANSISTOR POCKET RADIO. Perhaps Emerson was caught red handed trying to call a radio with three tubes a transistor radio and changed to the more "honest" pocket radio classification.

Formula One World Champion 1972, 1974
Emerson’s interest in motorsports initially led him to compete in motorcycle competitions. During his early teens he became involved in karting, taking his first title at 17 becoming Brazilian Karting champion in 1963 and 1964. Along with his brother Wilson, Emerson began racing Formula Vees, and during his second season in single-seater racing he won the Brazilian Formula Vee title at 21 years old. In 1969 he left Brazil to pursue motor racing in Europe. He spent a short but successful period racing in the British Formula Ford series before moving onto Formula 3, where he won the British Formula 3 Championship in 1969. In 1970 he moved to Formula 1 racing, signing with Lotus, and took his first Grand Prix win at Watkins Glen the same year. It was during his fifth Formula 1 race that his team mate Jochen Rindt was awarded the posthumous 1970 world Championship title. Emerson took his First Formula 1 World Championship title in 1972, his third season of Formula 1 racing. The decisive race was the Italian GP at Monza which he won to secure the title, and become - at the time - the youngest Formula 1 World Champion ever. This record took 33 years to be re-written, by Fernando Alonso in 2005. After a very competitive 1973 Championship where he placed second behind Jackie Stewart, Emerson decided to move to Team McLaren. It proved to be a wise decision as he won his second World Championship in 1974. The title would come only at the last race of the season, at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. The 1975 Brazilian Grand Prix was very special for Emerson Fittipaldi, even though he placed second in the race. The race was won by his close childhood friend José Carlos Pace, marking the first GP race ever with a one-two Brazilian podium, and at Interlagos, home to both, which made it even more special. Following this Emerson moved to the Fittipaldi Formula 1, a Brazil-based GP team. The team scored 44 points in its first eight seasons and took second place at the 1978 Brazilian GP in Rio. In 1989 he raced in his first Indy 500 and won after leading 158 of 200 laps and having a memorable duel with Al Unser Jr. Emerson achieved his second Indy 500 victory was in 1993. He retired from professional racing in 1996 after a serious crash at Michigan Speedway. He concluded an illustrious career being the only driver to win two Formula One World Championships, one Indy Car World Championship and two Indy 500’s. In 2005 Emerson had a chance to race again with some of his past competitors in the powerful open wheel cars of the GP Masters Series. The same year he became the owner of A1GP Team Brazil, competing in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport Powered by Ferrari series. Emerson raced professionally for the last time in 2008, competing in the Brazilian GT3 Championship with a Porsche and sharing the driving duties with his brother Wilson. In 2010 he saw a long-time dream become reality, as he drove the Lotus Formula 1 car with which he won his first World Formula 1 Championship in 1972 through the streets of his hometown São Paulo. On the same occasion, the finish line at the Interlagos racetrack was named in his honour by the mayor.

A hefty coatpocket radio from Emerson circa 1958/59. This radio utilizes a four transistor circuit yet has the model number 555. It is also called "The All American".
For a radio with only four transistors it actually performs well and sounds very good. It's also a fine looking set. The entire back of the cabinet is reverse painted (I included a couple of pics of the back in this photostream)
This version has a light blue cabinet with contrasting reverse painted white. Very nice.
Below is the Canadian version, known as a Marconi 455.

There was another variant of this design named the Galaxy. Other Emerson 888 coatpocket rados of this era were; Vanguard, Explorer, Titan, Satellite, Transtimer and Atlas.

St. Louis is an independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city. These two rivers combined form the fourth longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2017 population of 308,626 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area (home to nearly 3,000,000 people), which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second-largest in Illinois (after Chicago), and the 22nd-largest in the United States.
Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain and retroceded back to France in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired the territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; at the time of the 1870 Census it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.
The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Its metro area is home to major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina and Sigma-Aldrich. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri are located within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research presence due to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. One of the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) tall Gateway Arch in the downtown area.

St. Louis Union Station is a National Historic Landmark train station in St. Louis, Missouri. At its 1894 opening, the station was the largest in the world that had tracks and passenger service areas all on one level. Traffic peaked at 100,000 people a day the 1940s. The last passenger train left the station in 1978.
In the 1980s, it was renovated as a hotel, shopping center, and entertainment complex. The 2010s and 2020s saw more renovation and expansion of entertainment and office capacity.
An adjacent station serves the light-rail MetroLink Red and Blue Lines, which run under the station in the Union Station subway tunnel. The city's intercity train station sits a quarter-mile to the south, serving MetroLink, Amtrak, and Greyhound Bus.

This was Emerson's 1st plastic cased, all transistor radio. Their VERY FIRST was the leather-clad 842 portable set. Emerson also produced a "hybrid" radio using both subminiature tubes and transistors.
It's chassis is metal (not printed circuit board), has 6 socketed transistors made by Texas Instruments and the circuitry is handwired. It uses and old-style 9 volt battery which is about the size of a D cell.
The 849 retailed for $58 and was available in red, green, grey, gold and the very rare lavender.
There was a variant of this radio found as a model 859. It had an additional earphone jack added on the back.

Two coatpocket radios from Emerson and the Canadian Marconi Company circa 1958/59.
Although they only have a four transistors circuit they actually perform and sound very good. The entire back of the cabinet is reverse painted (I included a couple of pics of the back in this photostream)
In the mid 50's Marconi of Canada acquired the right to use the Emerson licences, allowing them to produce "Emerson" radios.

All Emersons have bends on their shields. The riband enwreathed is because my mother's family name was Wilkie and all Wilkies have a fess enwreathed. So the fess enwreathed was turned through 45% to fit between the bendlets. Lions were chosen because I like animals and I also think that in heraldic art animals are very powerful charges (when well drawn). The crest of a demi bear rampant come from the arms of Warwick, the bear and ragged staff. The spring of oak is to represent the forest of Arden, which is also in Warwickshire (at least the remnants of it).

From the famous 888 series by Emerson, the Vanguard sported a real space age look. I like how both dials seem to be suspended on two "pod-like" objects.
The Vanguard rocket program was a Navy lead program designed to launch U.S. satellites into orbit. It wasn't a successful undertaking. Several rockets failed to launch and one exploded on the launch pad. The Emerson Vanguard radio was far more successful......Most still work and none exploded.

Emerson Electric. Makers of radios, fans, appliances, electric motors, sewing machines, powers tools, process equipment, and other electrical odds-and-ends. They were the first to sell an electric fan in 1892. Emerson once had a huge manufacturing facility in Jersey City NJ that employed thousands of workers (one of many all over the country). Over the years, Emerson grew by acquisition and diversified to become a huge multinational company.
Emerson still make ceiling fans, one of the products that goes back to the roots of the company. Chances are though, like everything else, they are made in China or some other country.
