Although a few GEs can be seen, Proctor is still a solid EMD base. Minorca limestone loads depart as an empty pellet train rests in the A Yard.

As seen from an eastbound auto pacing on U.S. Highway 34 out of Galesburg, Illinois, a speedy Southern Pacific intermodal with Chicago on its radar, sprints through Oneida on Burlington Northern’s Galesburg to Aurora main line on the afternoon of June 2, 1991. Powering the train is a trio of Cotton Belt locomotives, with a pair of EMD GP60s sandwiching a GE B40-8.

The Ontario Southland operates a fleet of vintage EMD and Alco/MLW products on a few sections of former Canadian Pacific trackage in southern Ontario. Two of the coolest locomotives on their roster are a pair of former SOO Line GP7s, 378 and 383. Both Geeps are seen here working the Woodstock Turn on their way back west, stopping to do a bit of switching in Beachville.

CN's fall grain rush has brought big changes to its motive power in the Midwest. Gone are the endless parade of trains with GEVOs, replaced with older DC traction EMD and GEs locomotives on many trains along the former WC and IC lines from Chicago to Iowa.

Here, U75441-25 passes through the town of Silver Lake, Wisconsin, with four SD70M-2s in a 3x1 DP setup.

Electro Motive Division GP60 Demonstrator engines EMD #5 , #6 and #7 lead Southern Pacific GP35 #6614 on a Westbound double stack train in May of 1987. The train is seen at Dominguez Jct. as it nears the ITCF facility at Long Beach/Dolores, CA.

I believe the construction in the foreground was for the Blue Line commuter line.

Coming through Royal Junction and now in Amtrak territory, RUPO 310 opens it up to 40MPH with a big train in tow. I didn't count cars or take video, but about half the train was SLRs with a string of several CN 50' boxcars... something I hadn't seen in some time (at least that many noodles together). The days of this original GP40 are likely quickly numbered, but who really can predict the future?

Twas BeecherFest Day and the town was all abuzz about a few good moves, happening at just the right time of day, for some great photos. Nowadays, Brewtown can be tough for much in the way of anything interesting, but the Mojo of the big event made sure our visitors came home with something worthwhile to see. First up, WSOR T-004 notches it around the corner at Whitewater, WI bound for Janesville. Normally seeing this area of the state earlier in the morning, the combination of tardiness from Horicon and the shorter days of the year combined to make it a worthy "3 Pack" chase out of Waukesha, WI. Thanks to the Birds for the assist!

On a bright and crispy autumn morning a quartet of EMDs rumble through the valley by the south end of Mount Toby on the outskirts of Leverett, MA. The still waters of the Long Plain Brook provided an excellent reflection as the conductor passed along a friendly wave from the seat of his veteran locomotive.

The leader of this edition of the NECR #611 has spent 53 years on the rails providing service to the CBQ, BN, CNW, SP, UP and finally the NECR under the G&W.

Another weekend of beautiful, cloudless weather brought out a few railfans for Cincinnati's train of the day. NS 142 slowly makes its way north over the First Trestle in Ludlow, KY with NS 1071 "Central Railroad of New Jersey" heritage unit leading two other EMDs.

GP22ECO 7101 was built as Penn Central GP40 3173 in 1968 and would wind up at EMD's Lagrange plant for testing.

It is now in California working for a short line after doing time on Conrail and then Kansas City Southern.

A repainted and renumbered Western Pacific GP20 idles at North Yard in Salt Lake City on Jan. 19, 1985. Still wearing WP paint, a GP7, an original UP GP35 and two GP30s round out the EMD variety pack.

IC 1007 and IC 1022 bring CN L572 off the Dearborn Subdivision and into Norfolk Southern Oakwood Yard.

Louisville & Nashville SD40-2 3581 mingles with some GE’s in outside of the shops in Corbin, Kentucky. The unit continues in service today as CSX SD40-3 4075.

On January 30, 1996, after a major snowstorm, the one-time Chicago & North Western/Fox River Valley Railroad line south of Campbellsport, Wisconsin was plugged with drifts. A past C&NW manager now with the Wisconsin Central decided they would plow the line with a plow extra like they used to—get a couple of locomotives and run like a bat out of hell through the snow. Here, the plow extra is flying blind through the white stuff, horn blaring almost constantly because of the limited (none) visibility and the grade crossings on the line. I guess it proves a locomotive equipped with a pilot plow run at speed can be just as effective at removing snow from the track as a wedge plow! At least it was on this day… For the record, the locomotives being used as battering rams against winter plowing through Rockfield were Wisconsin Central EMD GP35 No. 4007 and a former C&NW GP7.

A group of SD40X locomotives pull UP's ACUW, a westbound iron ore train from Atlantic City, Wyoming to Geneva Steel, pictured departing Ogden, Utah with the rugged Wasatch Mountains.

The locomotives were built by EMD in 1966 as SD40 demonstrators, and sold to UP. All were built on SD35 frames and were equipped with EMD's new 645 diesel engine and AR10 alternator.

Various EMD variants comprise the motive power for Minnesota Northern's trip to Crookston from Thief River Falls. ILSX 1339 leads the way with ILSX 1340 on the tail end making the turn to Crookston at Erskine rather speedy. I looked back at past photos from this location and realized the weathered code line pole that stood here is gone. I felt something was different here south of Thief River Falls, but I was not certain just what exactly. I used it many times as a photo prop.

The class engine of Union Pacific's fleet of 47 DDA40X locomotives departs Salt Lake City, Utah for Los Angeles, California on April 23, 1978. UP 6900 was built by EMD for UP in April 1969 and would be donated to the City of Omaha, Nebraska for display after retirement in June 1984.

The northbound Hurricane Turn flagstop train has departed the Talkeetna Summer depot and is pulling into town to make their pick up at the little 'downtown' depot at the section house right in the tiny little village. Then they'll head north for 50 miles through the roadless wilderness stopping as needed to drop off locals, fishermen, and others striking off into the wildlands of Alaska before traveling as far as their namesake bridge and then turning back.

Leading the little train is ARR cab control/power car P32 (former AMTK F40PH #268 originally blt. Dec. 1977) which was acquired and rebuilt by NRE in Mount Vernon, IL in 2003 along with sister P31 and equipped with an 800KW cummins HEP engine. At left tucked away in the 1518 ft long siding for the weekend is a company work train with GP40-2s 3012 and 3011. Built new for the railroad in Jul. 1978 as part of the 3rd and final order of the model from EMD, 3012 was still wearing the classic 'Alaska Bold' scheme that she was delivered in albeit with a US DOT emblem on the nose. Ultimately she would be the last GP40-2 to wear this scheme and was finally repainted into the modern image 'Baby MAC' livery in 2014.

The sound of notched-out EMDs was clear for several minutes as this westbound manifest climbed the hill towards Snelling Avenue. An ACe and MACe are nearing the top of the hill at Como Park in some perfect evening light.

CN 5700 powers train 594 west of Sussex, New Brunswick. Not quite sharp focus, but oh well. I don't care. I'm posting it anyway.

An FEC GP40 leads two more brand new GEVOs across the drawbridge, this time in awesome sunlight, and from a slightly different angle :)

The BICB passes the Atlantic Dodger who has cleared up at Casey, IA. The GP on the Iowa Interstate Dodger would arrive in Atlantic as light power but I don't recall if the hoppers were left here or at Anita as I would chase the road freight to Atlantic.

BN 7894 arrives 35th Ave. at Northtown yard back in April 2000. The 7894 has the help in the form of five other EMDs. This was inbound Billings to Northtown off the Wayzata Sub. with six EMDs, five of them SDs. Consist was BN 7894, BNSF 2212, BN 7160, LLPX 2805, 2801, and BNSF 6922.

Looks a nice cut for the WC in the T-Yard with their boxcars and some "blue bullets" for the ELS.

New Brunswick Southern Ry train number 121 enroute from Saint John, NB to McAdam, NB breaks the afternoon silence passing through the town of Tracy, NB with SD40-2 8145 leading SD70M-2's 6407-6409 trailing. Here, train 121 with paper, lumber and intermodal traffic hugs the North Oromocto River before disappearing into the deep woods. The days are numbered for the NBSR 8145 with the impending arrival of the next batch of "new" SD70's more than likely it will join the other stored older EMD's in the St. John deadline. Two models representing a 20-year difference in EMD "General Purpose" locomotive production are now stablemates at the B&O Railroad Museum. B&O 6944 is a GP30 built in November 1962. CSXT 1507 is a fairly rare GP15T, built as C&O 1507 in October 1982. Only 28 examples of the turbocharged GP15T were constructed. 1507 wears a fairly clean coat of CSX paint that looks a bit out of place in a museum setting.

In late January and early February 1998, EMD and Union Pacific teamed up to test the SD90MAC-H on UP's Bond Subdivision (later Moffat Tunnel Sub). The units and EMD test car are shown westbound at Leyden siding, about 12 miles west of Denver. EMD Demo 8504 eventually went to the UP.

Union Pacific SD70ACe No. 8339 leads a pair of older SD70M's, No. 4635 and 5118 (the latter being heavily tagged with graffiti) on a manifest freight up the Palmdale cutoff on Cajon Pass. The train is passing the area known as Phelan, near Hill 582. 19 February 2023.

With a 30 car train in tow, engineer S. Nelson takes L24526 past the last remaining APP Marker in the region at Bellwood on CSX's Hopewell Sub. This was a real treat to see while home for Thanksgiving, and I hope to document more of the Bellwood while home for Winter Break.

CP Rail SD40 5540 and MPI SD40M-2 9018 were tied down in Curtis Bay yard in Baltimore after arriving with a sulfuric acid train from Canada in 1991.

The power was waiting for the nearby chemical plant to empty the train before heading back to Canaduh.

March in Minnesota is either winter's revenge or gorgeous spring. As of late, it's been the latter.

On this day, a trio of EMD widecabs head east from Dilworth. Those 60Ms do look good in orange!

Normally I prefer "back-toback" over "elephant style", but I really can't complain with a pair of 60Ms and a MAC.
