Much of the pottery was broken and embedded in the calcite and were containers traditionally used as water vessels. In ceremonies, the Mayans would break pottery to release the spirits that were contained in the items, as part of the thanks for what the spirits had given to the Maya. They think many of the ceremonies done in this cave were to appease the Rain God, or Chac during a drought in the Terminal Classic period (800-1000 AD).
