1st day was in pursuit of the road (more on that tomorrow) up to the Lick Observatory (out of San Jose, CA) and then on down the other side, eventually hitting Livermore.
Founded in 1888 this is the world's first permanently occupied mountaintop observatory, valued for its elevation (over 4,ooo ft) and isolation. Still a working site, although budget constraints and light pollution are both hitting hard, it is overseen by the University of California.
Even tho I had delayed my trip one day because it's only open on weekends, I would have been pissed if visiting the observatory was my main objective--turned out to be closed for a "Private Event" couldn't even access the parking lot !
