Hummers of course do everything fast. They burn energy so fast they basically live on the edge of starvation everyday (except of course around here). If we had their metabolism, we'd need to eat some 300 pounds of food a day !!!

They don't 'lap their food' but have tongues that are basically microscopic pumps that open and close like a spring-loaded trap. The tongue splits into 2 tubes that fill with nectar using capillary action and elastic recoil.

Each lick takes 1/100th of a SECOND and they do some 15 to 20 pumps per SECOND.
