Photo of Silo Showroom from 1973 Annual Report. I remember going to stores like this before the big box outlets took over.

Hundreds of electronics shops, ranging from tiny one-man stalls specializing in a particular electronic component to large electronics retailers, line the main Chuo Dori street and the crowded side streets can be found all around Akihabara. However it this this large The Yodobashi electronics mega store which dominates Akihabara. This young ladyhere is promoting Casio products. I took this picture while walking as I did not want to distract of disturb the young lady during her presentation, consequently this picture turned out rather blurred unfortunately. Although the Yodobashi mega store seen here offers everything electronic under one roof, the other shops in the neighbourhood offer everything from the latest computers, cameras, televisions, mobile phones, electronics parts and home appliances to second-hand goods and electronic junk. (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

Ah, now that is more like Akihabara- thank goodness I listened to the guy in the doner kebab stall and ventured here. This is a electronic display in a show window which advertises the Akihabara Entertainment Area. And of course, entertainment in this part of town means electronic and character based entertainment, DVD parlours and karoke bases The character of Akihabara has been changing constantly over the decades and continues to do so. In the last decade, Akihabara has emerged as a center of Japanese otaku (techno geeks obsessed with video games) and anime (hand drawn computer based animation) culture, and dozens of stores specializing in anime, manga, retro video games, figurines, card games, and other collectibles have filled the spaces between the electronics retailers. This photo is of the Circuit City in Waterford Lakes Town Center, Orlando, Florida.

Circuit City's history dates back to 1949. Circuit City struggled to reinvent itself; however, its emphasis on high-priced TVs and a decision to replace the commissioned sales staff members with less skilled hourly employees didn't work out. Circuit City closed its doors for a final time on Sunday, March 8th, 2009.

Update: On Friday, May 22nd, 2009 Systemax Inc. (SYX) completed the acquisition of the Circuit City e-commerce business and launched the "new and improved" CircuitCity.com. Out of the ashes... we will see how this works out.

Time to wrap up my visit to Akihabara electronics district now and head home- its far in excess of thirteen hours that I have been up and about with no respite barring the odd stop for lunch or coffee, so I am thoroughly pooped. Just as I turned some movement on a large video wall attracted my attention. This large and colourful set of anime characters was sliding back and forth from left to right. There were just two or three slides which kept playing in a loop. Colourful, aren't they? Anime is hand drawn based animation aimed at both the young and the old, though people who patronize these joints are usually youngsters Everything is typically Japanese, presented in Japanese and is aimed at the local Japanese, so ageing aliens (as in foreigner) like me would definitely not be welcome here! (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

In the corner just around the Yodobashi mega store and very close to Akihabara station was another of those corner shops selling a very colourful array of assorted fancy packed sweets and candies. Pictures of similar shops by day have appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). It appeared that some of the items my colleague in Dubai had asked for were here, sadly I could not buy it due to the language barrier, and I was totally pooped after nearly over thirteen hours of non stop activity with barely any rest stops, and also because I still had a lot of Japan to cover (Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Nara) before I got back to Dubai. Sorry Cris. (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

Looking at some new tv's at Best Buy.

In addition to shops, various other animation-related establishments have become popular in the area, particularly maid cafes where waitresses dress up and act like maids or anime characters, and manga cafes, a type of internet cafe where customers can read comics and watch DVDs in addition to having access to the internet. Here is one of the maid cafes in the Akihabara area. Apart from the fact that these anime and manga characters were Latin and Greek to me, and all in Japanese, and way beyond my age group, I do not think that a friendly greeting aside, my ageing alien (as ub foreigner) presence would be appreciated in places like this! (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

This was once a Campo Electronics. Campo had a relatively brief run in the Memphis area as they were no match for Circuit City. It's believed Campo closed down circa mid-late 90's, but the records are fairly convoluted here much like all the other records in the area.

Today this location is known as "BAPS Southeast", a "major organization within the Swaminarayan faith" according to Wikipedia. The organization's name appeared in a deed transfer in April 2004. The entrance is still somewhat Campo-like at least.

Two youngsters walk past a display with manga (a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels, typically aimed at adults as well as children.) characters, something probably aimed at them and people in their age group. Japan is really obsessed with computer based electronic entertainment like anime, manga etc. Manga is of course available in print form as well- printed manga comics were once the rage all over Japan with some of the illustrations being pretty graphic. I am surprised this manga character is showing a YouTube link. (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

I do most of my electronics shopping online and usually go directly to Amazon. If I need to see something in person here in Berlin I like Mediamarkt. It very similar to Best Buy and they sell everything from computers, televisions, music and general appliances. This one is in the new Alexa mall at Alexanderplatz. My wife has bought CB radios and had them serviced here! We use them for artcar caravans and such.

A side street in the Akihabara district of Tokyo. Yes, this is electronics central in Tokyo. But large electronics stores aside, Akihabara also has plenty of gaming and electronic entertainment places, DVD parlours, and of course cafes and restaurants, This is a cluster of them here. But cafes and restaurants aside, I am amazed as to how many gaming parlours, DVD parlours and other similar establishments in Tokyo are located on the upper floors of buildings. Reading so much about the shady goings on in upper floor establishments in Bangkok, I'd personally be very wary of going to any bar or naughty entertainment venue on the upper floors. That is apparently not a problem in Tokyo! (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

In Sacramento, on Del Paso. Closed recently, would make a good store for someone.

Back outside, this tiny single window eatery directly opposite to the Yodobashi store was doing brisk business. Of course, only one person could be served at a time, but there were always two or three people in queue- the Japanese love to queue up at eating place- at least that's what I observed all over Japan, and as you will see in my photographs of Shijuku tomorrow. Those pictures appear later in this album as we go along. I really could not make out what this stall was selling, it seemed to be mostly coffee and soft drinks. (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

Akhihabara is the electronics district of Tokya, Japan and has several electronics outlets on offer, the most prominent among which is this large Yodobashi electronics mega store. Akihabara has been undergoing major redevelopment over the years, including the renovation and expansion of Akihabara Station and the construction of new buildings in its proximity. Among these newly opened buildings were this Yodobashi electronics mega store and the Akihabara Crossfield, a business complex which is trying to promote Akihabara as a major centre for global electronics technology and trade. More pictures of the interior of this Yodobashi store appear immediately after this. (see subsequent pictures). Seen here are a couple of yellow jacket product promoters at a gondola display inside the store. The product they are promoting is Pocketalk, a pocket sized translating device. I've seen ads of it on YouTube. (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

A final shot inside the Yodobashi electronics store before we move on- we still have plenty more ground to cover. Another reason I lingered on inside this large electronics mega store, people watching and taking in the vibe apart was because I had been out and walking and exploring and photographing since nearly08:00, that was non stop physical activity (with just one lunch break and one coffee break) in excess of thirteen hours, so I did need a few minutes breathing time in a pleasant air con environment- I still have to do the trek back home after this- fortunately it's not too far from here by metro. Panorama of the front facade of Yodobashi Camera in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The top floors look like a parking garage. That, with the occasional train going by, and the incessant theme song over the loudspeakers in the store itself, make for a noisy visit every time we're there.

(at Yodobasi Akiba, Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan)

This is the Fry's of Bangalore, India. SP Road has a ton of electronics stores.

Mattress, cushion, manga, manga based bed accessories- I am confused! i was about to put away my camera when this store caught my eye. There were people going in and out of (or standing in front of) the store but I could not see any anime or manga screens or displays here- this seemed to be more of a bedding accessories store. My best guess is that this store turns out cushions, mattresses and bags with anime or manga characters. Now assuming that this surmise is correct, I wouldn't know if this store sells such items already printed with these characters or if they customize your plain jane pillows and duvets here. Whatever, it was a new one on me. (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

LED signs overload on Apliu Street (鴨寮街), Hong Kong.

Apliu Street has a huge flea market containing electronics, electrical components, and related items. A shopper can find both new and used merchandise in the area. Apliu Street is well known for geek shopping.

A cafe in Akihabara district of Tokyo- most Japanese cafes all over Japan are really this tiny, even smaller in areas like Shibuya as we will see tomorrow. (see subsequent pictures later in this album). Akihabara, also called Akiba after a former local shrine, is a district in central Tokyo that is famous for its many electronics shops. In more recent years, Akihabara has gained recognition as the center of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture, and many shops and establishments devoted to anime and manga are now dispersed among the electronic stores in the district. On Sundays, Chuo Dori, the main street through the district, is closed to car traffic from 13:00 to 18:00 (until 17:00 from October through March). (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

Japanese youth are suckers for DVD and electronic entertainment and so here is yet another DVD parlour in Akihabara. Most of these are innocent enough- mostly games and anime and character based entertainment, but there are some DVD places with adult themed videos as well as we saw earlier in this album. (see previous pictures) I was to encounter many naughty DVD places the following day as well in the Kabukicho district of Tokyo, which is considered to be Tokyo's red light district. We will get there soon enough- see subsequent pictures later in this album. (Tokyo, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

1991 at the very latest! 1986 or 1987 would be good guesses!

Fry's Prime. Too bad they went all cheap-o on the decorations and decided to go with a "Silicon Valley History" theme, which means they have a bunch of dull pictures of farms on the walls.
