Future Shop was a major Canadian electronics retailer many years ago. It was shut down by it's parent company, Best Buy, earlier this year.
I went to a computer store today to get a new chip for one of my cameras. I noticed this big (10 ft. tall) robot guy, with his swooning girl friend in his arms. He's from a movie called, “The Day The Earth Stood Still” (1951) which was directed by Robert Wise, who later directed “West Side Story” (1961) and later “The Sound of Music” (1965) & others. The electronics store bought some of these old robots & put some ot them in the aisles of their store. The Robots name in the film is Gort.

Prescott: I bought this boombox a few months ago and it's broken. I would like to return it.
Mongstad: Sorry, all sales are final.
Prescott: But the guy who sold this to me said "100% satisfaction guaranteed"

Haupfear: That voice sounds familiar...
How many times we have been asked not to take pictures in the public places?
I do believe the golden age of street photography for masters like Cartier Bresson are gone forever.
The people nowadays and the laws in modern societies and big cities are less tolerant of candid shots and street photography.
I like candid shots. Once you communicate with the persons by anyway, you won't get the same expression or moment again.

Outside Yodobashi Camera, Shinjuku, dozens of boxed watches form a layered wall of color and type: analog, digital, casual — each row a neat repetition of packaging and price tags. The photograph frames retail logic as visual rhythm: signage in bold red, the tidy grid of products, and the tiny differences that turn mass merchandise into texture. It’s a study of choice and order in Tokyo’s electronics shopping district / tidy, noisy, and unexpectedly photographic.
Located in the heart of Tokyo’s vibrant Shinjuku district, this scene captures the iconic Yodobashi Camera store, a multistory haven for technology enthusiasts and one of the city’s must-visit destinations for electronics. The vibrant advertisements and colorful logos covering the building are quintessential Tokyo, contributing to the city’s reputation as a visual feast of neon and bold typography.
The surrounding area, bustling with other electronic stores and department buildings, highlights Shinjuku’s status as a commercial powerhouse. The juxtaposition of lush greenery at the street level with towering steel-and-glass structures emphasizes Tokyo’s architectural duality, where nature and urban development coexist.

.... Future Shop was a Canadian electronics store chain. First established in 1982, by 1990, the chain had become the nation's largest retailer of computer and consumer electronics. In November 2001, Future Shop was acquired by the American consumer electronics store chain Best Buy for $580 million. Although Best Buy would begin to establish Canadian locations under its own brand following the purchase, it continued to operate the Future Shop stores as a separate brand, even though many of the new locations were in close proximity to existing Future Shop stores. On March 28, 2015, Best Buy announced the immediate closure of all Future Shop locations; 65 of the former locations are slated to be converted to Best Buy stores, while the remaining 66 (primarily those in proximity to a Best Buy) were closed permanently

One of the things you need to do when visiting Tokyo, is to wander around at night and see some of the more eye-catching store clusters such as this area specializing in electronics. These areas are not only visually brash, entering a store is often an assault on your hearing. The best viewing is, not surprisingly, just after dark when the streets are bustling and all the lighting is on. - JW
This is a Tone-Mapped image because it is made using an HDR-processed version of a single image which means only the tone-mapping portion comes into play.
Base image taken using a hand-held Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 18-105mm VR lense set to 18mm, ISO 400, full auto mode (no flash), f/4.5, 1/80 sec. HDR processing to make use of tone mapping on the single image was done using Luminance/Qtpfsgui with settings as indicated in the file name and/or the settings summary below. PP in GIMP: Tone curve adjustment, first to set the b lack point and then to get a more 'natural' looking tonal presentation than came out of the tone-mapping, slight contrast increase, slight saturation boost (very slight – just enough to clean up the colours a bit), dodging the lights at the top of the signs to get rid of the gray cast from the tone-mapping, also dodged the face of the man bottom centre, some slight additional localized tone curve adjustments to the large sigh in the centre, sharpened, fine black and white frame added, bar and text on left added, image scaled to 1024 pixels wide for posting.

On my 28th birthday, October 2nd, 2002, I took a trip to Ottawa South with my mother to have birthday supper at Red Lobster with my sister, who also celebrates her birthday on October 2nd (though she's 3 years younger than I am). At the time, I lived in Pincourt, Quebec, which is near Montreal, and, although I had visited Ottawa many times, I had never really explored Ottawa's suburban sprawl before. Before we had supper, we stopped off at a big box plaza that I now know was South Keys Shopping Centre and I took a set of photos with my Nikon F65 camera in the parking lot, pivoting in order to get enough shots to make a panorama. At the time, it seemed like a silly waste of film, but in a way, it was foreshadowing my life over the next decade.
A little over 2 years later, my parents and I moved to Nepean, in suburban Ottawa, and since then, I have taken many more photos of suburban Ottawa sprawl, I actually came back to the same spot in the South Keys Shopping Centre parking lot on my 32nd birthday, October 2nd, 2006, to take photos for an updated panorama 4 years after taking the photos for the original panorama.
6 years to the day later, or a decade to the day after my very first visit to South Keys Shopping Centre, on my 38th birthday, October 12th, 2012, I came back to South Keys yet again to take a third panorama. Unlike the 2006 one, I decided to only replicate the original panorama and not attempt to do a full 360 degree view. Shall I shoot another panorama here on my 48th birthday, October 2nd, 2022?

An Autostitch panorama showing the Merivale Road Future Shop big box electronics store in the Ottawa suburb of Nepean during the Blue Hour on a late January day.
I'm not certain of this, but our local Future Shop sure looks like it could be the one that they use for exteriors on some Future Shop commercials, including the one with the Asian Burt Reynolds fan.
You can also see Best Buy, Toys R' Us, Linens N' Things, and, if you look carefully, McDonald's.
I've already uploaded this panorama comprised of sequential photos that I took at South Keys Mall on October 2nd, 2002, when I was visiting my sister in Ottawa on my 28th birthday.
Well, I got a Future Shop gift certificate for my birthday this year, and I decided to go to the one at South Keys Mall (since I live in Nepean now, so I can just take the bus), and, since I was there anyway, I thought I'd stand in approximately the same position and do the exact same thing again, exactly four years to the hour, though, this time, I provide a full 360 degree view.
You can see how the mall has changed slightly over the span of four years.
A panoramic collage made from photos I took on a trip to suburban Ottawa (I didn't live here at the time) to visit my sister on my birthday in October 2002.
A strip mall comprising just big box stores seemed impressive to me back then, somehow. I mean, there are strip malls with big box stores in Montreal's West Island too, but the ones like Complexe Pointe-Claire have smaller stores in-between the Big Box anchors.
A much clearer shot of the former Circuit City, which did at least steady business during it's brief heyday. It's unclear why shoppers never really liked the shopping center itself. One of the issues at the time was just sheer overbuilding of such spaces, the retail market here had become very saturated.

This location was actually Circuit City's 2nd, after a move out of the Delta Square Shopping Center in the Mall of Memphis area. I know, that's like from the frying pan to the fire! Crazy thing is, the quite spacious strip center right next-door never filled to anywhere near half capacity, from day one much of the space has been vacant.

Taken while I was waiting in line at the customer service desk to get a 2.0 GB memory card from PNY Technologies, since my siblings gave me one for my birthday along with the Kodak EasyShare camera but it stopped working just a week and a half after I got it and it couldn't even be reformatted.
If you're wondering how exactly I took the picture if the memory card doesn't work, I used the camera's internal memory.
