The PCB pictured is from an IBM Model M keyboard, specifically a M5-1 made in 1993. The M5-1 has a small trackball mouse just above the cursor keys. This board is for the mouse. The keyboard's mouse recently quit working, so I took it apart to diagnose the problem. I think the capacitor pictured (center; metal cylinder) has failed based on what looks like corrosion on the board below the capacitor. They can leak, and the leakage damages the board.
On the other side of the board is the largest attached chip. It is probably the processor that implements getting the mouse input and making it available to a computer system using the PS/2 protocol. When this board is connected to the other board in the keyboard, the clock and data lines for the mouse are held low. Given the protocol, that is a sensible thing to do while the processor isn't yet ready to communicate, but it never changes. The bad capacitor may be the cause.
Dirty Electronics : Solder a Score @ ICA London 16th to 20th Feb 2011.
The composer and instrument maker John Richards takes up temporary residence in the gallery with Solder and Score, a unique participation opportunity for visitors to the ICA. Over the course of five days workshop attendees will build a large patchwork quilt-like instrument and co-write a musical score with John, culminating in a group performance and auction. Referring to his process as Dirty Electronics, Richards conjures electronic phenomena at odds to those found in today’s mass produced digital culture and utilises characteristics such as designer trash, hand-made, ready-made, hacked, bent, fedback and kitsch in the process.
For Live Weekends: Notation and Interpretation, the proposed workshops will immerse attendees in the interplay between process and performance beginning on the workbench, co-devising the modules that will form the ‘instrument’ and then extending onto the stage. The workshops will be informed by a musical score written especially for Dirty Electronics by sound artist Nicholas Bullen (founder member of Napalm Death and Scorn and a frequent collaborator with artist Mark Titchner).

This is the print of a routed circuit board, engineered to serve as a 8kB RAM for a 30 years old mainframe by myself. While at that time 8kB costed about 30.000DM (10.000$), today a 1Mbit memory IC costs only 2€ ;-)
Thus the mouse (optical mouses behave bad on surfaces like that one) has almost more electronics in it than the storage will have. A strange world ;-)
The controller for my lightstrip.
The microphone listens to the music and sends the signal through an LM386 amplifier. This then goes to the ATtiny13 which analyses the signal. It determines a running average volume, and lights the LEDs if the current volume exeeds this by a certain scaler. As a result, the LEDs always flash with the peaks and are off normally, no matter how high the volume (until the amplifier starts clipping, anyway!).

Sophie & I ran a 3-day wearable technology bootcamp using LilyPad Arduino for 11-13 year-olds at Aberystwyth for www.Technocamps.com - a project led by Swansea University in partnership with the Universities of Bangor, Aberystwyth and Glamorgan that inspires young people aged 11-19 to attend technology workshops on a range of computing-based topics.
