First attempt at reflow soldering in an electric skillet.
Was not very successful. Solder paste used has a melting temperature of 231 degrees, while the skillet claims it can maintain 240. Some joints towards the edge of the board flowed correctly, but most did not. Going to try again with some solder with a lower meting point.

more than just blink. I added bits for a connector and regulating the power from 5v for the Atmega168 to 3.3v for LCD, accelerometer, etc.
I messed up the 3.3v voltage regulator and took a few tries bending the pins different ways before getting to work.

Product photo shoot for a client. This little beast is a flash memory based mp3 player about half the size of a credit card and can play movies on the 96x96 pixel full color OLED screen. Too bad the movie finished when I took the shot. =(
Tools used:

1x 50W halogen desk lamp pointed over the mp3 player at the reflective silver cardboard on the other side
1x reflective silver cardboard (part of the Oral-B Professional Care 7000 series packaging) directing the reflected halogen light back at the mp3 player

These are all the boards needed for the drive by wire system, plus a spare for each. The copper-clad was sprayed with flat black paint, which was etched away with an Epilog 45W laser before the exposed copper was chemically dissolved. The layout is a bit messy because I'm in a hurry to get these working.

These micro-nixies look really cool lit - heavy on the mercury-vapor purple and it makes the glass glow purple - as you can see!
I made up a yagi for the 70cm band to use to track high altitude balloons (ukhas.org.uk, cuspaceflight.co.uk). It worked pretty well! The photos detail the construction steps, more or less.
This step:
parts needed: some pvc pipe, some aluminium rods, hacksaw, ruler, tape measure. not shown: coax cable with a plug, soldering iron, araldite, drill.
They are my ArduinoMe or Monome Clones, as you prefer. They have a 64 button/led matrix fully configurable and works on OSC/Midi. They are the coolest hardware controllers on the world, pure action/reaction.
An unattended radon detection and data logging instrument I built for work. I know... I accidentally installed an under-board SD card slot on the top, so the cards have to be put in upside down. That's embarrassing...
Present made for my lovely girlfriend. Based on a first-generation 1970s HP seven segment LED display that I was given. I loved the retro feel and decided to make a proper gadget with it.
I installed an ATI All-In-Wonder dual card and Windows Media Center Edition on my office PC. Then I hooked up these two Viewsonic 17" V71 CRTs. Everything works great (even joined it to the SBS domain).
Interesting french technology with small removable resin modules. Atonishing: this is a pre-production prototype part, late 60's, I have all the paperwork including schematics and specifications book, and I found it almost free on Ebay...

When traveling, I go through a rather thorough, yet painful process of figuring out what the heck electronics I should take along. On Saturday, Sara and I will be traveling to Finland and Sweden, so the process begins.

Whew! So traveling, sort-of light, I'll take the Canon 7D, the 24-105, 10-22, 28mm and the 50mm. Only one flash, a 430ex as I don't plan on shooting much with flash. Canon S95 is small and does video, so that's going. Polaroid is not needed as we aren't going in the water. My phone is a necessity (though it's CDMA, WiFi makes it very useful for everything but phone calls). Ipod touches will stay back for Ian (so we can do Facetime w/ the iPad 2, which we will take). Kindles come along as does my laptop. May take both Vosonics for redundant photo copying, camcorder stays as does the nuvi (not taking a car), but Oregon goes for geocaching and general navigation. If you actually made it this far, congrats, you are a nerd.

A coworker and I flew to Washington, DC this week for the Computers in Library 2007 conference. I took this on the plane as we left Boston - this is the first time I'd ever seen an airplane where the "no smoking" sign was replaced with a "no electronic devices" sign. Progress is interesting.
