This is a little switchmode power supply that takes 9-12 volts DC and kicks out somewhere between 100 to 200 volts DC. It's intended for powering nixie tubes, and a kit version is sold by LEDSales in Australia, who I assume also developed it. They were thoughtful enough to include the circuit parts list and diagram in the kit assembly instructions (pdf). I wanted a version that used surface-mount parts, so I found surface-mount equivalents to all the listed kit parts and designed a board around them.
LEDSales' board is the one used in this nifty clock by Sascha Grant.
My board here is a proof of concept to see if the surface-mount parts I chose actually work. Despite using smaller parts it's bigger in area than LEDSales' board, though lower in profile - sort of; on the other side of the board there are a few largish components. I bet with careful routing I can squash it down to a very small size, like not much bigger than a square inch.
Happily, the concept is at least partly proven. Given 12V from a wall-wart it sits there and throws out 180V with no complaints. I haven't tried loading it with anything more than a single NE2 bulb, so we'll see how it does under pressure. Its voltage tends to drift downward, so there may be something wrong with the feedback part of the circuit, though it looks like it stabilizes after a while.

This is the first prototype PCB for my LED firefly concept.
For some reason, despite extensive checking the PCB was completely mirrored when transferred it onto the board, it looks like printing from an exported gerber is the problem here. This sucked!
However I'm not one to waste a perfectly nice PCB, so I took the ATtiny13 and bent all the pins over, mirroring it, then soldered that down and came to my LED.
Here I had a real problem: all the pads are on the bottom normally, so now they'd all be on the top. For three connections, I was able to make a giant solder bridge, but for one of them there wasn't enough space so I managed to make a jumper wire. That was crazy soldering! I somehow got the resistors in place too.
Sadly the LED points into the board, but you can still see what colour it's trying to pull off.
I then went to program it and for some reason the ATtiny13 wasn't responding at all. Probably static or broken or something crazy. I checked all the connections but they were all good, so in the end I took a second ATtiny13, bent all the pins on that as well and soldered it on top of the first ATtiny13.
This worked (amazingly), so I now have a working prototype board - with a deadweight ATtiny and an LED that points into the board, at that.
I also had to tape over a track that was shorting the button cells, damn inaccurate silkscreens! Oh well.
By the way, the random wire is for a nice random seed when read using the adc.

more than just blink. I added bits for a connector and regulating the power from 5v for the Atmega168 to 3.3v for LCD, accelerometer, etc.
I messed up the 3.3v voltage regulator and took a few tries bending the pins different ways before getting to work.
What is it? A Webster Electric Company tube amplifier! Model 43-20 circa late 1930s - 1940s! Amplifiers boost an incoming audio signal's strength and power so that it can better utilized in public address systems. Early amplifiers utilized vaccuum tubes.

Product photo shoot for a client. This little beast is a flash memory based mp3 player about half the size of a credit card and can play movies on the 96x96 pixel full color OLED screen. Too bad the movie finished when I took the shot. =(
