These micro-nixies look really cool lit - heavy on the mercury-vapor purple and it makes the glass glow purple - as you can see!
I made up a yagi for the 70cm band to use to track high altitude balloons (ukhas.org.uk, cuspaceflight.co.uk). It worked pretty well! The photos detail the construction steps, more or less.
This step:
parts needed: some pvc pipe, some aluminium rods, hacksaw, ruler, tape measure. not shown: coax cable with a plug, soldering iron, araldite, drill.
The square in the middle is a ULN2803 darlington transistor array.

a more finished view of this DIY lamp. it's not as bright as i hope it would be and the light's a little cold. (though some would say it has the correct white balance...) still it worked though and is good if you want a mellow-ish cool light.

A coworker and I flew to Washington, DC this week for the Computers in Library 2007 conference. I took this on the plane as we left Boston - this is the first time I'd ever seen an airplane where the "no smoking" sign was replaced with a "no electronic devices" sign. Progress is interesting.

Here we see the Secret Project LEDs lit in eight different colors, which I figured was a good number because it uses eight LEDs. Also, to keep me from wandering off on a tangent just because this type of LED can in theory show Every Color In the World!!! Eight, as they say, is enough.
The Colors are really eight different mixtures of red, green, and blue light, which our eyes interpret as the different colors. In the upper right is a color bar showing the colors I was trying to get, and actually the real-world version is not horribly far off; this picture doesn't quite do justice to the colors.
In person, as in this picture, the arrangement looks like a placid, steadily-glowing set of lights when in fact it is a flurry of activity. Only one of the LEDs is lit at any given time, and the circuit switches among the eight of them rapidly enough that persistence of vision makes them look steady and simultaneous. Each gets a "slice" about 1 / 500 of a second, and during that time the microcontroller lights each of the red, green, and blue elements in the LED for a specified fraction of the time. The net result is this nifty little rainbow oval (as close to a circle as I could arrange the LEDs on a breadboard).
