I made this photograph on a quick walk through a slightly seedy area of Manhattan, passing through on a hot afternoon as many people filled the streets. (It actually was crowded, despite the appearance in this photograph.) The area is one of somewhat run-down businesses in one of those pockets where there are not so many tall buildings.
I see many things when doing street photography. Some of them are static enough that I can take some time to make the photograph, but others happen instantaneously and are gone in an instant — they require a "shoot without thinking" kind of response — and that was the case with this one. Obviously, the man walking toward me was only there for a moment, but even better was the brief conjunction of red things in the frame. A close look may reveal even more of them that you notice at first.

I have two monitors. Too bad neither one of them is an Apple display, but Apple's monitors are expensive and I've had some bad experiences. First a MultiScan 15", then a 17" Studio Display.
The Aaeon Systems MiniPCI USB2.0 host controller card, with one of the 2mm headers removed. The other one, and the power header, also come off. (Note the piece of blue-tack, used like Plastigage to see if the lid touches the tall caps when closed. It's very tight.) More photos of this project to follow, I promise.

Using elastic properties of stretchable materials, components are inserted in thread matrices that hold them strongly. Next step would be to find or create a conductive thread matrix version of this stretch garment. It exists in materials research labs [ in sweden (lena berglin) and also in gent (project SWEET) ] but they are not on the market yet :( for instance the beautiful tfcg.elis.ugent.be/projects/stretchable.html
This material opens also the opportunity to think about stapleable electronics that would be inserted between the threads. Smt films could be placed by a specific stapler, and the connections ruggerized with a thermostreching process.
One big advantage of this elastic is also how it facilitates arduino to get out the breadboard ;)

A servo moves the indicator arm as the ultrasonic rangefinder detects things. It's accurate to within a centimeter at close range, and within 5cm at longer ranges.
It works up to 3m, but my wall is 2.73m away. In this shot, my hand is being found a few centimeters away.
I also have an IR rangefinder which is a bit more complicated to use because of the non-linear response, but I'm working on it!

These large tubes are not, strictly speaking, nixies. I think. They are neon tubes, but instead of number-shaped electrodes which I believe define nixies, they have fourteen wires arranged like alphanumeric LED displays'. I got four of them sort of by accident - I put in a bid on an eBay auction for them, expecting to get sniped, and I didn't. Weird!
On edit, 5/29/08: According to a Burroughs catalog from 1970, these are NIXIE® tubes. Burroughs, as the holders of that circle-R, would be the authority on what's a Nixie and what isn't, so they are. QED.
This type of tube was used for the big stock-ticker displays in the New York Stock Exchange around the early 1970s. I don't know if the ones I got were used there, but just for fun let's say they were. (ETA: the displays that used these were not used in the NYSE, just in brokerage houses. Darn.)
The obligatory thing to build out of nixies, for the nixie geek set today, is a clock. With these tubes, it's the FLW - a device which shows Four Letter Words. The original FLW was built in 1973 by Raymond Weisling, and he has a page about their history. (Note: his site advertises FLWs for sale still, but don't order any - apparently even paid orders have gone unfilled for a couple years and no one can reach the seller for comment. Plus the stuff they sell doesn't include the tubes and they're getting both pricey and hard to find).
I will at some point at least make a FLW circuit with these tubes and post shots of it here; not sure if I'll make a permanent version.
I upgraded the platforms broken joints with some screws. I won't be afraid of breaking them anymore.

This looks like a former Incredible Universe where they moved the entrance to the side - it's unthemed, but it should be Hitchcock's "The Birds".

Basically, the Ekdahl Moisturizer is a spring reverb where the springs are exposed so they can be played/hit/fiddled with. As well as being capable of creating sound in itself, you can of course also play sound through the springs like a regular spring reverb - this makes for happy-fun-time finger-modulation of the reverb on whatever audio that's going through it. On top of this there's an analog multimode filter that can be used to attenuate or exaggerate certain frequencies in the sound, this is real handy while playing the springs as you can - for instance - cut all the highs and just make thunderous doomy sounds or do the opposite; cut all the lows and make that ear piercing high frequency special love. Also, it incorporates an LFO that's internally routable to the filter and that also has some external routing-stuff. The Ekdahl Moisturizer has tons of CV / Expression pedal options on the back for even more hillarious moments. The Moisturizer is a mono unit.
The Moisturizer was developed with the help of Jason Willett (Half Japanese, Leperchaun Catering), Martin Schmidt (Matmos, Instant Coffee), Joshua Atkins (Polygons, Major Powers), mom & dad and many more

Here's the finished, working ToyBot.

ToyBot is made from a cheap RC toy car. I took out the radio electronics and put in an Arduino microcontroller and an Adafruit Motor Shield motor controller and some sensors.
ToyBot drives around the floor looking for light (or for shade, if it's too hot). When it finds a good spot it stops and goes to sleep. It wakes up when the light or temperature changes, and resumes driving.
