This was my first time working with a water-slide decal. I'm surprised at how well it came out. It did take a couple of attempts to find a shade of yellow that would show up over the pistachio green.
I thought maybe a $1 or $2 as this guy is a regular vendor who gets his stuff at storage unit auctions. Nope $7. Needless to say I passed. There was also a new rerelease mint in package there for $10. Again, I can't figure where they get their prices.
Happy New Year to all my flickr friends. This is my last batch of pics from 2012. Enjoy and discuss.

Asked to try out a pre-production CW keyer from Cumbria Designs, I did a "Quick and Dirty" mock-up in a surplus small cardboard enclosure.
Easy to drill, and to add legends if required, though not much cop for RF screening!
Another bit of masterful PIC programming from Mr Ron Taylor, G4GXO!
Not _exactly_ homebrew as I didn't build the original board, but it's "sorta" homebrew!
Atmel ATMEGA32. I assume this is the primary processor. Also an Atmel eeprom. Looks like an I2C one from the resistors and minimal pinout.
I grew up with a father that could fix things, build things, tear things down and put them back together, and who was just comfortable around tools in general. For whatever reason, I never picked up that ability. I'm completely inept with most tools beyond the basics. Putting up a shelf is an afternoon task of pure frustration for me. And being a homeowner has not improved that situation at all.
Yet if you sit me at a computer, I can make it do wonderful things. Given my tools of choice (development environments, programming languages, etc.), I can really crack open the hood and let loose, commanding the raw processing power of the CPU to do my bidding on massive amounts of data. In fact, I make my living finding new ways to express that power in new and compelling ways, and then showing it off to convince others that my tools of choice are the best tools of choice.
Close the hood of that computer however, and all my work disappears. When my dad closed the hood of the van on an engine he rebuilt, he had a vehicle that would get him another 100k miles. This discrepancy has not gone unnoticed.
While I've never had the ability of those many tool-bearing manly men, I've always had the desire. As I progress in my career and find that I'm increasingly comfortable (bored?) with more complex computing tasks, the more I want to "get outside the box." Over the past few years I've become increasingly compelled by electronics and robotics, but it wasn't until just this year that I put my foot down and started venturing into new realms - the physical realm.
Even given my knowledge and experience, I've only been able to talk to things attached to the computer - that is until now.
This morning, with Paige off for an overnight stay at the grandparents, I broke out my ever growing stash of electronics and began hacking. I had taken many baby steps up to this point. I had previously gotten an ultrasonic range finder to report to the computer about the distance between it and the items in front of it, but that was only of limited use as I was still tethered back to the computer. I had also previously gotten two RF radio chips to talk to one another, but I hadn't figured out how to attach any additional sensors and report that data.
Above is a Parallax Ping))) ultrasonic range finder hooked to an Arduino development board, which has mounted to it an XBee RF radio. With the 9-volt battery pack it is completely autonomous - that is to say that it is physically disconnected from the computer. The Arduino is running a program that samples range data from the sensor about ten times per second, and then broadcasts that data over the XBee radio. Back at the computer I have another XBee radio that receives that data and pipes it into the computer via USB.
At this point I could do lots of interesting things with the data. As an example, I could store it in a database for charts and trends, and even display that chart in real-time across the Internet. In this case I use a simple socket server that takes serial data from the USB port and broadcasts it to any connected program. The connected program here is a Flash-based, Adobe AIR powered application that shows the distance in inches.
The wattage of the XBee radio I use here is capable of a 400-foot range, and I proved that by walking around the basement with the sensor and seeing my computer screen update in the distance. More powerful XBee radios can broadcast even as far as several miles.
I know full well that this isn't particularly impressive in the world of electronics, but it's a start. My start. There are many other far more ambitious Arduino-based projects already out there, but I feel like I've finally made that leap to getting outside the box. I have a few different projects in mind for myself, among which includes remotely flushing a toilet, and building some very interactive Halloween and Christmas displays. You know, the useful stuff, like rebuilding an vehicle engine.

I cannot stress the importance of wearing as little clothing as possible at this point. The more clothing you have on, the greater chance you have of building up a static charge in your body, which increases the likelihood of your body transmitting the energy to the electric boards, shorting them out forever.
Create housing for each of the electronic components, making sure they fit in snugly and do not move around. The placement is up to the builder, however, and is also dictated by the available room inside of the chassis. By far, the Start/Select buttons take up the most room and have the most awkward position, with the Whammy Bar a close second. Make sure that all wires are sill soldered into their respective boards. It is advisable at this point to connect the controller to a PS2 and start up the game to ensure that all parts are working correctly.
My first go at soldering the components onto a custom circuit board. No, my remote control didn't break--I'm building my own MintyBoost. Right now, it overheats and doesn't connect for charging--anybody see a short up there?

Should Retail and Medical Get Hitched: Convenience always wins, and as the point of care is becoming more “care when I need it, where I need it” the pharmacy is becoming a key bastion of our health. Consider that the pharmacist is the most trusted healthcare provider and that these retail chains have the culture to put the “customer in the center” to deliver a more accessible care experience.Business incentives and patient outcomes become aligned in this model where loyalty and long-term behavior change are mutually reinforced. Don’t miss this fascinating session discussing how this care delivery model can bring better health for all!

Slightly updated PCB. Now the boards are blue, the pads are gold plated, only 1mm thick and the silkscreen has been revised and now shows Arduino pin functions for PORTC and PORTD.
This batch of 25 boards was made by MakePCB.com - very affordable but also quite slow. My first order took about 5 weeks. GoldPhoenix just took about 1 week, but at a higher price.
Some old equipment that I did a trade deal back in the 70's. The tall rack on the right was a complete Collins HF CW, Phone Transmitter used by the Galveston Coast Guard back in the early days. Not sure of the model. Wish I had kept it, it would be worth its weight in gold today.
In design, Epad ZT-180 looks like the original iPad. On the left side, it has 1 USB port, 1 mini-USB port, 1 HDMI port, 1 headphone jack, 1 MIC jack as well as 1 DC jack and 1 TF card slot to expand the memory. On the other side, on-off key, volume buttons you can see in the pictures. But what’s difference with iPad and Zenithink ZT-180 is 7 inch TFT resistive touch screen (1024*600 pixels) display with a HDMI port.
A 1.3 mega pixel camera will be one of the high points of the Epad ZT-180. With the webcam, video chat for business conference or connecting with family and friends can go anywhere anytime. What’s more, this pad also supports external 3G, Bluetooth function, G-sensor, Flash 10.1, PDF, Office software, eBook etc. Besides, the battery is 3000mAh, work time about 4-5 hours, multi languages are available.
Frank speaking, the tablets take the place of PC won’t be impossible. It is a useful supplement. But the era is Android world, open and free. Hope PC can run Android OS in future. Lastly, according to Vkamobi, China Wholesale Electronics, Epad ZT-180 costs less than USD0.00, quite affordable.
