Most of the electronics is on this PCB, which can be divided into 3 sections. On the right is the replay amplifier. The bottom left corner is the recording amplifier. Finally, the middle section and top left corner is the timing and control circuitry.
The amplifiers are used for both the outgoing message endless loop tape and the incoming message cassette. They are conventional in design.
The control circuitry is mostly SCRs (thyristors) connected in pairs so that when one is triggered the other is turned off.

Finally, a solution for getting HD video into my Mac. The Hauppauge doesn't come with Mac software, but EyeTV makes software that works fine with it, and there is another program called HDPVRCapture that is made by one of the members of the Hauppauge team that made the HD PVR.
I don't play games, but this is one solution to import your HD gameplay into your Mac or PC. I use it to import video from my Tivo that the cable company marks as "Copy Never" or "Copy Once". The Tivo will not transfer these recordings to your PC unless you do a prom mod, which I don't want to do while my Tivo is still under warranty. I can report that this works *flawlessly*. I imported two programs tonight and it worked like a charm. The Hauppauge does hardware based H.264 encoding, which means that you don't have to do any conversion to upload to YouTube or other places. This is in contrast to using Tivo Transfer, which transfers recordings in the native Tivo format and then you have to convert. Even if you use TivoDecode Manager or iTivo, you still have to do the conversions, and transferring the recordings from your Tivo, even using the wireless adapter is SLOW. The Hauppauge is much faster, basically recording to your computer in real time. So, while you're watching your show, it's recording into your computer in real time. It is then in .mp4 format and ready to go, to be imported into iMovie or whatever video tools you use to convert to divx (.avi) or whatever format you want. I don't mind the MP4 format, so for me it's ready to go once it's done recording, which is SWEET.
If you're looking for a way to get HD recordings into your computer, or gameplay from your XBox, or Playstation 3, this is the answer. In fact, it's pretty much the only "off the shelf" answer out there, for HD video.

Under the hood = Breadboard. This circuit was modified from the original built in the Spring of 2007. A dear friend bought a big Game Boy case for me to tote the synth around in for my birthday. It has been a saving grace in getting the electronics through international airport security. Not until the summer of 2009 was the breadboard actually wired into the case. In 2010 the circuit was revised and the case further modified to include expanded control over the signal routing.

Here is the nixie driver printed circuit board after having been bathed in etchant. The dark bits that remain are the copper circuit traces, though they don't look like copper in this shot because they still have laser printer toner stuck to them. I'll scrub that off later.
Here you can see the traces on the other side of the board through the thin epoxy. The tricky bit with making double-sided boards is to get the two sides to line up properly, and I ended up misaligning them just a tich. It should be close enough to work, though.
It's occured to me that electronics would be a horrible hobby for young children. Involving, as it does, toxic and caustic chemicals, lead, hot irons, tiny sharp bits of metal, power tools, and (depending on your project) high voltage.
