A group shot of the original "Golden Age" League of Heroes. A snap shot that serves as a reminder of a happier and simpler time. The team was led by the bold and adventurous Cobalt Cyclone, a rocket pack wearing powerhouse. His sidekick was the ever faithful and ingenious Kid Electron. The Silver Sentry was a shining example of virtue and justice, with his gleaming armor and indestructible shield evil never stood a chance. From a far away world hailed the beautiful, all-powerful, and omnipotent Viridia. The Crimson Cloak and Gothic rounded out the team, both grim avengers who maintained a wary eye for evildoers and kept the city safe through constant vigilance.
Transmission electron micrograph of HIV-1 virus particles (red/gold) budding and replicating from a segment of a chronically infected H9 cell. Particles are in various stages of maturity; arc/semi-circles are immature particles that have started to form but are still part of the cell. Immature particles slowly change morphology into mature forms and exhibit the classic “conical or spherical-shaped core.” Image captured at the NIAID Integrated Research Facility (IRF) in Fort Detrick, Maryland. it took awhile to come up with a title for this picture; I had to reach back to high school or early university chemistry for this one --- to me this fountain (30sec exposure using a fence post as a tripod) kind of looks like the way electrons distribute around the nucleus of an atom. The fountain is located on Blue Mountain Village in Collingwood Ontario

A Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a closed stoma on the leaf of a Gymea Lily plant (Doryanthes excela), shot at 619× magnification.
What am I looking at? (An explanation):
What you can see here is a photograph of the stoma of a plant, shot at ultra-high magnification using scanning electron microscopy.
The stoma (collectively stomata) are small pores on the surface of a leaf that allow the release of oxygen and the uptake of carbon dioxide in plants. These are opened and closed by the plant, depending on the environment.
The stoma consists of two guard cells which control the aperture of the stoma. You can see here the stoma is firmly closed. In this species, stomata are sunken below the leaf surface, or epidermal layer. The raised cells that you can see surrounding the stoma are epidermal cells, specifically subsidiary cells. Four subsidiary cells surround the two sunken guard cells that make up the stoma.
If you look to the left of the guard cells, you can see a long, thin structure which has grown around one of the subsidirary cells and down towards the sunken guard cells. This is the hyphae of a fungus, possibly a pathogen which may try to infect the plant. It's identity is unknown.
The colour in this image has been added for effect. Scanning electron micrographs are only available in greyscale - no technology exists for colour.
The bar on the bottom left corner of this image provides a scale. In this case, the bar shows a length of 20 micrometres (µm). 20 µm = 0.002 centimetres.

Taken close to 3 AM on Feb. 2, just south of Five Fingers Rapids in the central Yukon Territory. At this point, though it's light was not particularly intense, the extent of the river of light flowing across the sky was such as to resemble a flood, a waterfall of pale green streamers pouring over the horizon, and was beginning to cast greenish shadows across the vast snowy wilderness.

Space fans have been sending their names to Mars and other extraterrestrial destinations for more than two decades, and it’s that time again: From now until Sept. 30, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is taking names for the Mars 2020 rover mission.
All you have to do is type your name and location into an online form on NASA’s website and hit the “Send” button. You’ll instantly get the opportunity to print out or save a souvenir boarding pass, listing more than 300 million miles’ worth of faux frequent-flier award points.
Once all the names pass muster, they’ll be handed over to JPL’s Microdevices Laboratory to be etched onto a silicon chip with an electron beam. Each line of text will be a mere 75 nanometers wide — which is less than a thousandth the thickness of a human hair.
That’s small enough to get more than a million names inscribed onto a dime-sized microchip. But even at that rate, it’s likely to take more than one chip to do the job. After all, more than 2.4 million names were etched on two chips that were sent to Mars on NASA’s InSight lander last year.
If anything, the Mars 2020 rover will be an even bigger deal, thanks to its role in NASA’s accelerating campaign to look for evidence of ancient life on Mars.
“We want everyone to share in this journey of exploration,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington, said in a news release. “It’s an exciting time for NASA, as we embark on this voyage to answer profound questions about our neighboring planet, and even the origins of life itself.”
The 2,300-pound, car-sized rover is due for liftoff in mid-2020, with touchdown on the Red Planet scheduled for February 2021. The rover’s main mission at Jezero Crater will be to explore what’s thought to be the site of an ancient river delta on the edge of a giant impact basin. The crater’s rocks and soil may contain organic molecules and other traces of microbial life.
“The delta is a good place for evidence of life to be deposited and then preserved for the billions of years that have elapsed since this lake was present,” Mars 2020 project scientist Ken Farley said last November, when NASA revealed where the rover would be going.
The plutonium-powered rover will collect samples for saving up, with the intention of finding a way to return the samples during a future round trip to Mars. NASA also plans to pack a mini-helicopter on the rover, along with an experiment aimed at producing oxygen from Mars’ thin carbon-dioxide atmosphere.
Such a technology could come in handy when astronauts set up shop on the Red Planet, perhaps as early as the 2030s. And who knows? Decades or centuries from now, interplanetary explorers might well be able to recover the name-laden microchips from the Mars 2020 rover’s frame. Let’s just hope they bring their microscopes.
