A Northern DMU coasts northwards (left to right) towards its St Helens Central stop. The train is in approximately the same position as the DMU in Photo 3752l.

The loop and the Down line are between the camera and the train.

The 'extra' mast and arm to the left of the TTC next to the bridge gives the impression that the loop may be electrified, but the lie is given by the next electrification structure left (south) which is a mast bearing terminating tensioners. The 'extra' arm and tensioners carry a wire overrun for the electrified trailing crossover.

The loop is not electrified. To look at the layer of rust on it it has not carried a wheel for some time. As no booked freight uses the Wigan Branch that is unsurprising.

Forewarned by close attention to realtimetrains ALX400 went to Blackrod station to witness this vehicle passing, with lights shining below.

An experienced railway engineer using the pen name 'Joseph_Locke' has helpfully commented:

'That's a Tamper; if it was going very slowly (seems likely since all its working lights are on) that it is probably either a) doing a measurement run following the recent weekend's work or b) running within a possession to a worksite (e.g. Bullfield Tunnel drainage). The path to Blackrod only on realtimetrains may indicate the possession limit was near there.'

ALX400 took this shot from the northbound platform looking souh. The temporary fencing at the northern end of this platform which protected the public from entering the extension has been removed, indicating it is ready for longer trains which will start with the imminent Farnworth blockade.

Whilst the last phase of Huyton Junction re-quadrupling was taking place services from Wigan to Lime Street were terminating at St Helens Central, with rail replacement buses on to Lime St and stations between. The trains reversed at St Helens, forming northbound services. This entailed using the station's trailing crossover, which had not long been electrified for this eventuality. That crossover is otherwise little used and never normally used by passenger services.

This sequence of shots runs through the track and signalling work needed to perform these manoeuvres.

The crossover set for the train to cross over, the lock in place all signals go. The dolly seems to have had a refurb since this procedure was used in the first Huyton blockade, when the its "Off" was scarcely distinguishable from its "On".

The Sinistron Electrifyer was made for the Sinistron tribe form Electonia. The Electonians create large electric voltage in their bodies when they get over excited. The neighbouring Gigligoons from Jokinestra keep invading Electronia and exciting the Sinistrons, causing them to become ehausted and unable to defend their planet. I created the Sinistron Electrifyer to help them protect their planet. However, this glorious weapon got them so excited with its stunning green and chrome that they electrified more than ever!

Do you feel it building?

This electrifying feeling that connects our hearts like street lights raised on the same current... as one burns and shocks to life, so the other follows without thought.

On Monday 14 December 2015 the All Stations Liverpool Lime Street to Warrington Bank Quay via Huyton and Earlestown went electric, nearly putting a tin hat on Phase 2 of the NW Electrification Scheme, with finishing Allerton Depot Phase 3, Roby-Huyton 4th track and two footbridge guards the only things left to do.

On the first day of the Bank Quay electric service a Northern Electrics Class 319 calls at Earlestown from the west.

On Monday two single strands ran through Rainhill, now (Friday) there are two pairs, attached by permanent fixings in some places and by temporary fixings in others.

Back in the Spring at Rainhill, at the footbridge between Lea Green and St Helens Junction and at the footbridge at the western end of Manchester Victoria Network Rail had to install bespoke temporary screens to separate bridge users from wires, particularly on the bridge steps.

The screens at Manchester Victoria have been replaced with a more permanent version, but Rainhill still awaits the finished versions on its two footbridges.

The temporary versions are functional, but no-one pretends they are finished.

The Ince Moss Chord (ELR = IMG) is a sharply curved, bi-directional single track which joins the Huyton to Wigan line to the West Coast Main Line.

The chord meets the Huyton to Wigan 'Lancashire Union Line' (ELR = SBH3) at Ince Moss Junction and the WCML here at Bamfurlong Sidings Junction.

The three lines, the two junctions mentioned above and Springs Branch Junction form a triangle

As part of the current electrification works the chord has been relaid and resignalled. It was double track, as is implied by the sign to the right of shot and on Google Earth. As always, the complicated layout is clearly displayed in 'Railway Track Diagrams, Midlands and North West' where it appears in Section 27A.

This shot is taken from the same place as Photo 3162k, using more zoom. The lines coming in from the left are the Up and Down Goods Lines. The Up and Down Fast are beyond the junction, where a Virgin Pendolino is accelerating souhwards (left to right).

Taken through the pallisade fence which separates the tracks from the public footpath which follows the chord for some distance, looking southeast.

Phil added: "Walking to the end of nine revealed a new mast base for the electrification of the new platforms."

Whilst following the NW electrification I have encountered many pleasant, professional Orangemen who are clearly proud of their work and happy to spend a few minutes sharing their expertise. Today was another smashing example.

Two chaps working on the southern end of Platform 5 told me what's what and readily agreed to use my camera to take shots from a non-public area.

I really appreciate their unselfishness and good humour.

Wires have gone up through the station.

So far they include return wires and full wires over the Platform 2 track.

Platform 3 tack has not yet been wired.

The Platform 1 line appears to be being electrified only as an overrun from its junction with the main line. That wiring ends at Platform 1's southern end and appears complete.

The line to Blackpool South reopened as planned after a Winter blockade to undertake major route improvement and electrification works on the route to Blackpool North.

Kirkham and Wesham station has been substantially rebuilt with a third platform for the first time ever, bi-directional signalling and a lift in the pipeline.

Much ado at Bolton this day.
