Eiffel Tower from Champ de Mars

Europe Trip 2010 - Day 12

January 04, 2011

The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, [tuʁ ɛfɛl], nickname La dame de fer, the iron lady) is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Built in 1889, it has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in Paris[10] and the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair.

The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until theChrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct.

The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by elevator. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.

The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

As crossposted on our photoblog, pleasantly tilted.

The Eiffel Tower is named after engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Constructed from 1887 to 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, it is now the most-visited paid monument in the world, with more than 7 million people annually attending. The tower, the tallest structure in Paris, is 1,063 feet tall, and its square base measures 410 feet on each side. During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to become the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years until the Chrysler Building in New York City was finished in 1930. Excluding transmitters installed in 1957, the Eiffel Tower is the second tallest free-standing structure in France after the Millau Viaduct. The tower has three levels for visitors. The top level's upper platform is 906 ft above the ground, the highest observation deck accessible to the public in the European Union.

My favorite European City -- so far!

Let's make travel enjoyable

The Eiffel Tower attracts 5 million visitors a year. Why did they all come today?

The Eiffel Tower is an iron tower built on the Champ de Mars beside the River Seine in Paris. It is the tallest structure in Paris and possibly the most recognized monument in the world. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, it is the most visited monument in the world; 6,428,441 people visited the tower in 2005. At the time of its construction in 1889, the tower replaced the Washington Monument as the world's tallest structure, a title it retained until 1930, when New York City's Chrysler Building (1063.33 ft tall) was completed.

Beautiful view of Eiffel tower in the heart of Paris

I took some pictures earlier in the year, from a trip to Paris in March, another to Lisbon in April, and some in-between photos from Berlin.

These were from my first time using a Kodak Portra 400 with a Black Mountain Golden Half, a half-frame camera I bought years ago on a trip to Barcelona.
