Eiffel Tower, Paris

Other title: Eiffel Tower (Paris, France)

Creator: Eiffel, Gustave, 1832-1923

Date: 1887-1889

Current location: Paris, D?partmente de Ville de Paris, Ile-de-France, France

Description of work: Gustave Eiffel was a successful engineer specializing in daring iron railroad bridges, such as the Garabit Viaduct, that were able to span enormous gaps using extremely lightweight trussed frameworks. In 1885, Eiffel told his engineering team about the French government's call for a monument intended to "stun the public imagination" to be built at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, the centenary of the French Revolution. Two of these engineers, Nouguier and Koechlin, along with architect Sauvestre, designed a 300-m high tower, which would dwarf the 169-m Washington Monument, the world's tallest structure at the time. Although an official design competition was held in 1886, the government had already seen and approved the design by Eiffel's team, which won unanimously. Most of the costs of construction were paid by Eiffel, who was then to receive all revenue generated for the 20 years the tower was intended to stand before demolition. The tower's openwork design, parabolic profile, and incredibly precise engineering allowed it to soar to an unprecedented height with a minimum of material, wind resistance, and swaying at the topmost viewing platform. Although aesthetically controversial among Parisians when built, it soon changed from merely a temporary image of France's modern engineering skills to an enduring symbol of Paris, of France, and of modernity itself. The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, [tuʁ ɛfɛl], nickname La dame de fer, the iron lady) is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Built in 1889, it has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in Paris[10] and the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair.

The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until theChrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct.

The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by elevator. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.

The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

Gustav wasn't just about a tower in Paris.
