Echidna, photographed very close to the wartime bunker I uploaded today. Actually, a very friendly monotreme - didn't mind at all that I was there.
I followed this toad trying to get a decent picture. Finally, he chilled in this pose. Persistence payed off!
Heroes come and go, this week's hero is the Egg-Layers of America, working overtime to get these oval breakfast staples in the market. We salute you for the efforts on March 1st 2025.
Long hours of scanning pools in the Broken River at Eungella, Queensland, eventually provided a reasonable collection of photographs of the Platypus, one of Australia's two monotremes. Both this aquatic diver and the spiky echidna are egg-laying mammals, native to Australia. Echidnas are also found in Papua New Guinea.
10 chickens living in a specially built coop in Apex, Baffinland, not far from the Arctic circle.
As far as I know, at 64 degrees North, these are the worlds most northerly chickens. Let me know if you you're aware of any further north.
I needed to correct the impression from my previous platypus shot that tails were optional! Here you can see the "beaver" tail clearly, but not some of the dangerous sharp bits attached to the hind legs because I don't know if this is a male or female.
freshly laid. will try to post a photo of the egglayer later. i discovered her laying the eggs, fired a couple of shots which seemed to disturb her, and then my dog ruby, deciding that THAT MOMENT was super hugs-time, got between me and this nice subject :-). after all hugs were given and received, the bug was long gone... she did leave some pretty eggs/cases behind though.
On the count of three. One. Two. Squeeeeeee.
Finally I get to Rooney's when the chicks arrive. Boxes of them, all over the store. Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. I had to rush through the shots as I was late for a dinner. This is my fave. Pardon the noise, ISO 2000 I think.
Here are a couple of my chickens waiting their turn at the water troff. We have 8 chickens which we raise for eggs only. I've never taken very many pics of these birds for some reason and had my camera handy so here you go.
The Sussex chicken is a classic British breed known for its dual-purpose utility, providing both meat and eggs. Originating from England, it's recognized for its graceful appearance, featuring a long, broad back and a rectangular body shape. The breed comes in eight color varieties: brown, buff, coronation, light, red, silver, speckled, and white. Notably, the light Sussex has a white body with black neck hackles and tail feathers, while the speckled variety boasts rich mahogany feathers with black dots and white tip
Our chickens are so happy that Spring has arrived. Of the "old guard" we have 4 Buffs, 3 Australs, Abby the Americauna, and Rose, the Barred Rock. When all is said and done, we will have 30 more chicks added to the flock.
Textures from Skeletal Mess - gotta luv him!
Three of my chickens check out the camera.

This stunningly beautiful fish is a true challenge to photograph due to its alert nature. I guess given its brilliant colors he is a predator magnet. He is about two inches long and hails from rivers in certain parts of Ecuatorial Guinea and Gabon. It is not difficult to keep but requires good care and varied and nutritious food to keep at its best. The female is a drab muddy color hardly distinct in appearance from a female guppy. The reproductive strategy of this fish is truly remarkable and I invite you to read more about this interesting fish. Unfortunately some members of this amazing group of fish face extinction due to habitat degradation.
Please understand that this extremely basic platypus shot was only included because it was the only time this fascinating creature came almost completely out of the water. Unfortunately it chose to appear at the very dark junction of a rainforest feeder stream. I've done all I can to save the shot, but to very little avail.
Remember, also, that when you are able to compare it with natural features in context, this looks way bigger than it really is.

Oppy was $1.75 at our recent Hallowe'en Farmers Market..,
we hope she's a hen..but she comes in when called
and likes to perch on hand or shoulder,
so she'll avoid the bbq and learn to travel by bike for her keep...
if'n she doesn't lay eggs much...
Sculpt update on the Alien Queen - ALIENS - 1:18 scale.
Sculpted using Aves FIXIT Sculpt from Aves Studio.
I'm close to completing the mouth of the Alien Queen - finished sculpting the lower gum line around the teeth of the lower jaw. Also started to flesh out the lower jaw a bit but have much more detailing to add before it's considered complete.
Both the top and lower set of teeth have been sculpted separate and will be cast eventually using a semi-clear resin..or crystal clear, and painted afterward.
This coming week I want to complete the teeth and lower jaw and set up the components to the head for molding and casting. From there we go to the neck as well as the Queen's inner jaw.
More to come! Thanks for taking a look! #alien #aliens #alienqueen #egglayer #yourhighness #xenomorph #customactionfigure #art #sculpture #giger studioADI #studioadi
Sculpt update on the Praetorian Xenomorph (egg layer) - Aliens: Defiance - 1:18 scale.
Busy refining the upper torso while beginning the sculpt of the lower abdomen and piping to the back of the torso. Using Aves FIXIT sculpt from Aves Studio LLC.
I have included a scale shot comparing the size of the Praetorian body with my original beast from ALIEN 79. Both at 1:18 scale. They both share the same body structure (with some differences to the limbs). Upper torso and abdomen will eventually be connected via a ball socket. More to come! #alien #aliens #xenomorph #egglayer #sculpture #miniature #avesfixitsculpt

Sculpt progress on the Egg Layer Xenomorph. Aliens: Defiance (Dark Horse Comics). 1:18 scale.
Been a crazy couple weeks with the Holidays ramping up and office work to be completed...but things are slowly getting back to normal and I finally had some time to complete one of the hands to the Egglayer Xenomorph.
I haven't sculpted many hands so it's a fun challenge and allows me to accumulate some teachable moments through trial and error. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger right?
Elongated fingers are creepy so I may have slightly drifted from the comic reference material a tad but I think it will add to the finished figure. Sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, I have included a before and after shot for those interested, as well as a scale shot for the curious.
I will sculpt the second hand in the same dynamic fashion along with a neutral set of hands similar to the smaller Big Chap I did a few years back.
May be my last update for the new year? Not sure. Anyway, thank you all for your continued support! I hope to bring much more to the custom hobby next year. 2019 was a struggle to get things moving but I battled through it.
I hope all of you are enjoying holiday festivities and have a wonderful New Year 2020!!!!
Hope you enjoyed the update! Talk soon! More to come!!!

This is one of my favorite killies. With a little training this fish learned to eat from my hand and to tolerate, albeit grudgingly, my photo taking. It lives in an aquarium that is completely dominated by a bed of Echinodorus tenellus and algae. It lives with another male and two females. The males squabble from time to time but there is no sign that they are hurting each other. You can see the tip of the tail of the other male in the bottom left corner of the photo.
We picked up our spring chicks today. 18 egg-layers. We spruced up our coops and are excited to have a bigger flock. Betty and Martha seem rather disinterested thus far.
One of our Black Rock chickens has started to lay an egg a day despite the cold weather. The eggs are lovely!!
Sculpt update on the Queen. ALIENS (86) - 1:18 scale. Work in progress.
Began sculpting the teeth. More precise, the maxillary teeth (upper jaw). First I built the upper maxilla that will fit separately in the head, marking each point where the teeth will be inserted. What I love about FIXIT is that during it's final hour of curing, you can carefully shape pieces to fit other parts of the sculpt without it permanently attaching or curing to that particular part. Example, the maxilla which I shaped to fit the roof of the mouth. This will help in molding and replication later.
Next was to sculpt each tooth, two at a time, one on either side. Once fully cured, I carve the teeth into shape using dental tools, giving them the appearance of settling into the gum line of the maxilla. So this process of sculpting, curing, carving took a good week to complete.
While that was going on I sculpting more detail to the head, This version will feature the lips fully extended, mouth fully drawn taut. I intend to do another version of the head having the mouth partially closed and relaxed.
Still refining the teeth. I need to fill in some spots and reduce others. Then I will add gum tissue around each tooth. This piece will later be cast in clear resin so I may have the teeth appear to be translucent.
More to come!! Will begin working on the lower jaw soon then back to other projects that deserve some attention.

(First of all, everyone should love this.) They're everywhere I turn!! I turn into the drive way, there they are. I walk out the door: geese. I go to work-- Geese! I get home from work: GEESE! I stop by randomly, GEESE!
A brick is a block of ceramic material used in masonry construction, usually laid using various kinds of mortar. It has been regarded as one of the longest lasting and strongest building materials used throughout history.
The fired colour of clay bricks is influenced by the chemical and mineral content of raw materials, the firing temperature and the atmosphere in the kiln. For example pink coloured bricks are the result of a high iron content, white or yellow bricks have a higher lime content. Most bricks burn to various red hues, if the temperature is increased the colour moves through dark red, purple and then to brown or grey at around 1,300 °C (2,372 °F). Calcium silicate bricks have a wider range of shades and colours, depending on the colourants used. The names of bricks may reflect their origin and colour, such as London stock brick and Cambridgeshire White.
"Bricks" formed from concrete are usually termed blocks, and are typically pale grey in colour. They are made from a dry, small aggregate concrete which is formed in steel moulds by vibration and compaction in either an "egglayer" or static machine. The finished blocks are cured rather than fired using low-pressure steam. Concrete blocks are manufactured in a much wider range of shapes and sizes than clay bricks and are also available with a wider range of face treatments - a number of which are to simulate the appearance of clay bricks.
An impervious and ornamental surface may be laid on brick either by salt glazing, in which salt is added during the burning process, or by the use of a "slip," which is a glaze material into which the bricks are dipped. Subsequent reheating in the kiln fuses the slip into a glazed surface integral with the brick base.
Natural stone bricks are of limited modern utility, due to their enormous comparative mass, the consequent foundation needs, and the time-consuming and skilled labour needed in their construction and laying. They are very durable and considered more handsome than clay bricks by some. Only a few stones are suitable for bricks. Common materials are granite, limestone and sandstone. Other stones may be used (for example, marble, slate, quartzite, and so on.) but these tend to be limited to a particular locality.
Sculpt progress on the Newborn. Alien: Resurrection - 1:18 scale.
With the sculpt of the ALIENS(86) Queen in progress, I thought it would be fun to match her up with her future offspring thanks to Ripley 8 (going to have to be a fan to know what I'm talking about) and get a look at the scale. Once the lower jaw of the Queen is complete I will get a better idea but so far I think both scale pretty well with one another and enhances my hopes to one day have a Resurrection diorama featuring the "Birth of the Newborn". Till then, both stands on their own and both have a ton of work to have down before that road is crossed.
This update focuses in on the Newborn and it's open mouth variant I'm working on. My previous update featured the jaw wired into place. This week I'm sculpting in the gaps and detailing the optional tongue that will be held by a magnet.
From some of the early production images, the tongue appeared to have "buds" over its surface...possibly glads for smell and taste. A trait from Ripley's side of the family for sure. So I'm taking a blank tongue I formed using Aves FIXIT sculpt and detailing it with small portions of additional FIXIT forming the buds. The entire surface isn't covered in these glads so I need to pay attention as to not overdo the surface with these things LOL!
I know the Newborn doesn't get a ton of love from the Alien community but I must admit, it's been one of my more enjoyable projects over the past year or so...and I think it's because of the fusion between the human and the xenomorph. You get to work with a little of both when sculpting this guy....at least I don't have to sculpt a TAIL! LOL! That Queen though...the tail will be a major project in itself.
Hope you enjoyed the update. Any questions, let me know. Everything you see has been hand sculpted using Aves FIXIT Sculpt - a two-part epoxy that can be found here

This is a male. The alert wariness of this fish has made it a very difficult subject to photograph. He seems to sense when I have the camera and he dives into the tank thick plant cover. I have taken literaly hundreds of photos of its tail. So enjoy this photo as it was a hard one to get.
This small fish looks and acts much like a cherry barb when it is immature. However when the males reach maturity they develop a brightly iridescent blue-green back and a color combination of red white and blue-green unlike any cherry barb I have ever seen. I have been unable to find description of any barb that matches the size and color combination of this particular fish. It looks a lot in shape to a cherry barb but cherry barbs are red sometimes bright red which is quite unlike the color combination of this fish. Also they are positively hyperactive, so much so that getting a good photograph is practically impossible unless you restrain the fish in some way. They move constantly and unpredictably and surprisingly seem to like the brightly lighted area of the aquarium. I don't know the origin of these fish as they were given to me as a present several years ago. This fish represents the sixth or seventh generation that has grown under my care, I wonder if it was captured in the wild or if it is a variety that died out. Unfortunately little information is available to see if the cherry barb has other variants that are not red,. The species is said to be on the verge of extinction in the wild but the Red List site that monitors the status of this species has not been updated since 1996 so it is unclear how this fish population has fared since then.
