I hike and photograph in Aman Park about once every two weeks. It is a wonderful area for photographers and it is only a few minutes from my home. In an effort to alter my usual routine of two cameras with wide-angle zoom lenses, I connected my 90 mm macro lens to one of them and focused on little things. I was surprised at the number of opportunities I found for some quality macro images.
Grevy's is the largest of Africa's zebra species, and the most mule-like in appearance. Here a herd of Grevy's feeds in the evening before sunset. Because it lives mostly in desert areas, Grevy's zebra is endangered from lack of food after a long drought. Zebras in Samburu National Reserve have access to water from the Ewaso Ng'iro River, but food is scarce and daily haying efforts are helping to keep animals -- not just zebras but also oryxes -- fed. ©2022 John M. The conservation area I visit regularly has been closed to people twice in the last couple of months as conservation officers tried to capture and remove some agressive Turkeys. They have so far failed in this effort, and people continue to antagonize, and then provoke attacks by, the birds.
This was a fairly recent image. I was lying in the snow photographing something else and the Turkeys wandered by, perplexed by the late dump of snow and trying to get to possible food sources underneath.
On a late spring evening in 1969, 6706 passes Aldwarke, near Rotherham with an unbraked freight train.
Despite efforts, I've been unable to identify the train from the headcode. I believe the P within the headcode denoted a train from the Scunthorpe or Doncaster area. I'm pretty sure the words on the side of the 2nd and 3rd wagons say 'Iron Ore Tippler', The iron ore mines at Dragonby and Santon were still producing in 1969, so it's possible that this is British Frodingham ore heading for one of Sheffield's steel works.

Try as it might, the sun had a real effort on its hands attempting to show itself through the fluffy clouds. I just luv these type of skies, as they create such depth.
A play around with the settings, gave me the time I needed to get some foreground water movement. The small lighthouse at Roker"s curved pier is backlit by the sunrise colours.
Amazed I managed to get anything as every time I set up, down came the rain.
Despite the best efforts of the British weather, there are still plenty of autumnal gems lurking in the woods. Taken at Hillock Wood, Princes Risborough.
Jasper is a dog of passions, one of which is frisbee. He gives each catch he goes for 100% effort. And when he's done, he's done. There is no giving a catch 50% effort because he's getting tired. He either gives 100% or 0%. No middle ground.

A loaded ore train returns to Braddock, Pa as seen from the famous Westinghouse bridge.
This shot is a result of an effort to include railfanning with my trucking career resulting in finding a convenient parking spot for my layover about a ten minute walk from this location.
Dundas Square is Toronto's answer to Times Square with many advertising billboards. It is also site for outdoor concerts and festivals. It was a place for protests and demonstrations, until the authorities decided that in the name of Democracy, protests are only permitted for approved causes and for freedoms in countries far away. I was crossing the square, when the billboard above flooded the place with colour on otherwise grey drizzly day. The square was not always there. It opened in 2002 in effort to revitalize the area. To be honest, I should, but do not remember what was there before.

I've long had a fascination with the Pittsburgh & West Virginia but have never made the effort it would take to try to railfan the east end of the railroad. Given an opportunity to try chasing a good Wheeling train west out of Connellsville on a beautiful March afternoon it was well worth the hours of driving to get there. The P&WV's "high & dry" nickname is well earned as the railroad climbs immediately out of Connellsville for a cross country hilltop hopping route through the mountains over a series of impressive bridges. The first of the two major river crossings on the way to Pittsburgh is the Banning bridge over the Youghiogheny River. On the right you can see CSX's original B&O mainline which followed the river from Connellsville and is now well below the "high & dry". Wheeling train 617 has the special painted "Ohio" unit on the point along with two in corporate paint which isn't easy to get on this part of the railroad. There was some unfortunate glare on the third unit which I photoshopped out but overall I was still pretty happy to get a shot of a train on the former P&WV here. Banning, PA 3/21/21

My parting effort before leaving the Great Sand Dune National Park and Preserve was taking 46 images that span the expanse of the Northern view of the dunes at around 6 PM. This panorama covered a distance that measured over 4.5 miles. To take these images, I used a Sony 24-240mm zoom set at around 139mm with a vertical framing using a Sony A7R3 with manual focus using a f/14, 1/320 shutter speed, and ISO 100. The complexity came in post processing trying to stitch together 46 images where each has a file size over 46 MB. I first tried Lightroom's Pano's program option and it failed. I then tried Photoshop and got the same results. After Googling for an option, I tried Panorama Stitcher Pro (youtu.be/nmBdxFLuFnM) and it successfully stitched together this 8.09 GB file. Of course I then had to output it at a much small file size to meet the file size limits in flickr. Really worthwhile effort to learn on. Check out these other flickr photos from this location, see: Colorado Fall Colors and Great Sand Dune Grass.
This is a very small echinacea (cone flower) bloom. The image is an example of photo stacking. It used 19 photos stacked together to increase depth of field. It was one of my first efforts to use a new focusing rail and macro reverse adapter. The adapter reverses a lens to create a macro lens.

A western meadowlark adds some extra effort to boost its singing prowess. Based on the residue on the rock, this must be a favorite perch!
My wife and I just got back from an amazing trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was so wonderful to get out shooting and the critters did not disappoint as they were plentiful and willing subjects. Custer State Park has a wide variety of wildlife and is considered one of the top spots in the US for viewing this natural bounty.
Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to view, like or comment on my photos!

The smallest kingfisher in the Philippines at only 14cm long and rarely seen. They live in dense forest and this one was no different, sitting in a tangled mess of palms.I had to wait 40 minutes for it to return to this perch. Then I had to shoot through a narrow space in the leaves at high ISO. The effort was worth it though.

Our efforts were rewarded when we hiked high up Sheep Mountain via the headwaters of the little creek running past our camp. The sheep were everywhere. This ram appears to be interested in me, but really he was just following the edible plants downslope, where I happened to be, cropping a mouthful here and a mouthful there.
Dall Sheep are sometimes called "thinhorn sheep"; you can see how their horns are thinner and more flared than those of the Bighorn Sheep found to the south. We spent a couple hours with a small band of rams, and then some ewes that were scattered in twos and threes across the tundra slopes. One of the highlights of that summer.

Sunrise at Bow Fiddle Rock near Portknockie in Morayshire, Scotland. This was a particularly good morning. The tide was right, the sea was active and the light came along eventually and gave us some really nice colours. Definitely worth the wait and the effort.

Une heure de balade en forêt , en main , quotidienne , pour lui montrer son domaine et l'habituer à tous les évênements ... While waiting for the bigs assault on Keating I couldn't decide whether to use my drone or get a ground shot. Knowing that if I tried both it would probably be a disaster, so at the last minute I handed the controller to the one & only Justin Ross to work his magic while I concentrated on the ground shot which I almost screwed up anyways. So a special thanks goes out to Justin for this awesome shot that will never be repeated again!!!
A Great Egret gathering branches for it's nest. It is truly fascinating to watch them do this. I'm amazed at what they accomplish.
The contract brush cutter on the New Hampshire Northcoast is just about finished clearing the main line, this combined with some additional efforts by a certain employee have made the Union Meadows causeway look as good this spring as it probably has since construction of the railroad! Up until relatively recent times this causeway had high brush and trees growing on it, making it completely unshootable. With the freshly rebuilt GP38-2 back on the train this week, albeit in the middle of the consist, combined with decent weather it was a good time to shoot the causeway before the brush starts creeping back up. With 2 loads for Rochester and 25 loads for Boston the three units are having no trouble making track speed despite a late start from Ossipee.
