In June 2018, the Education Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory hosted 50 pre-service teachers for a weeklong professional development workshop, during which they got hands-on experience with STEM lessons, heard from JPL scientists and engineers, and toured the Pasadena, California, facility. The experience was part of NASA's Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Educator Institute, which takes place at NASA centers across the country each summer. The first of the two sessions at JPL this summer focused on elementary-school STEM education.

The education of individuals with intellectual disabilities has a long history. There have been significant contributions through the years by doctors, teachers, psychologists, parents and advocates for individuals with disabilities. The recognition that "idiots and imbeciles" could benefit from education has evolved over the years to the current practice of inclusion of individuals with disabilities into "regular" classrooms alongside their contemporaries. The goals of education have also evolved from the mere tolerance for interaction with others to assuming a place in an accepting society. Here are a few individuals who have sought to educate individuals with disabilities as well as the society they live in.

This is the Millsaps Career and Technology Center's (Starkville, Mississippi Public School System) robot entry during the Mississippi BEST Robotics Competition hosted by Mississippi State Universty on October 29, 2011.
This robot was one of 16 at the competition and was designed and built by high school and middle school aged kids over the course of six weeks. The competition was just about the robots, the students also competed with a marketing and outreach program which included technical interviews, meeting with the media, and presenting their work to the public.
The Millsaps team won awards for BEST Display and Rookie Team of the Year. They won the preliminary round of the actual robot competition, but eventually fell out during the semifinals due to a technical problem.
The overall winner of the competition was the Starkville Christian Home Educators won BEST overall, and Starkville Christian School also had a great showing.
It great watching these kids compete with their creations. The Starkville High School pep band even showed up for a while. The atmosphere was electric, better than many high school basketball or football games I've been to. It was great fun to see the smart kids get their day in the sun. (Of course, I may be biased, since I'm the father of one of them).
