On March 20, 2012, the Southwest Educators Association presented the petition at the SWISD school board meeting. The SWISD board president made a statement in the middle of the board meeting that TSTA was present and encouraged everyone to sign the petition.
Rotary members and professional educators host the Missouri Multidistrict RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Academy, a community service and leadership training program for approximately 100 high school students. The curriculum includes conducting a simulated service project, team building exercises, and an introduction to Rotary principles of Service Above Self and the Areas of Focus over four days in a residential setting. More than 250 participated in the first annual Superintendent’s Fitness Challenge 5K Fun Run on May 5, 2012. Superintendent of Public Instruction Larry K. Shumway has challenged the educational community to get fit this school year. It’s an effort to encourage educators to embrace fitness as a way to improve brain function and overall health and to provide a good example for Utah’s youth.
