Suzanne Treister, HEXEN 2.0 Historical Diagrams, 2009-2011

Historical Diagrams, 29.7 x 42cm, Cybernetic Séance, 21 x 29.7cm. Archival giclée prints on Hahnemuhle Bamboo paper. All works courtesy the artist and Annely Juda Fine Art, London

The works Historical Diagrams and Cybernetic Séance are part of the larger project HEXEN 2.0, which looks into histories of scientific research behind government programmes of mass control, investigating parallel histories of countercultural and grass roots movements. HEXEN 2.0 charts, within a framework of post-WWII U.S. governmental and military imperatives, the coming together of scientific and social sciences through the development of cybernetics, the history of the internet, the rise of Web 2.0 and increased intelligence gathering, and implications for the future of new systems of societal manipulation towards a control society. HEXEN 2.0 specifically investigates the participants of the seminal Macy Conferences (1946-1953), whose primary goal was to set the foundations for a general science of the workings of the human mind. The project simultaneously looks at diverse philosophical, literary and political responses to advances in technology including the claims of Anarcho-Primitivism and Post Leftism, Theodore Kaczynski/The Unabomber, Technogaianism and Transhumanism, and traces precursory ideas such as those of Thoreau, Warren, Heidegger and Adorno in relation to visions of utopic and dystopic futures from science-fiction literature and film.

Jason and the Psychonauts journey in search of the golden Reese's.

Dr. Stanford Bellow raced into the nurses' office, barking orders and snuffing out cigarettes on nurses' hands. "Get to work, you layabouts! There are sick people here, sick people!" Nurse Gladiola Prefontaine watches in awe, but is it awe, or is it the phantasmagoric presence of Ghostly Dancer?

You see, Nurse Gladiola Prefontaine had been the victim of one of Dr. Stanford Bellow's attacks. He had slapped her so hard once that she had lost consciousness...and ever since then, Ghostly Dancer appears to her in times of stress.

Nurse Gladiola Prefontaine had overlooked Dr. Stanford Bellow's brutish attacks simply because of his rakish good looks. But now, Ghostly Dancer whispered things to her...things that made Nurse Gladiola Prefontaine question EVERYthing about her life. And when ghost hunter Rip Jackson is brought into the ER after an ectoplasm overdose, Nurse Gladiola Prefontaine may give up nursing after all!

Will Dr. Stanford Bellow convince Nurse Gladiola Prefontaine to stay -- and marry him? Will ghost hunter Rip Jackson fall for Nurse Gladiola Prefontaine? Will Ghostly Dancer ever stop her entrancing dance? You'll never know if you're RELUCTANT to read RELUCTANT NURSE!

Texture "ectoplasm" by Sunset Sailor.

Today was full of mixed feelings. On the one hand, The weather continues to be pretty grim, and everybody's feeling pretty drained after the Steam Rally, of which I still have a few photos to upload. On the other hand, I went and cashed a cheque for £1000 today from my Grandmother, which she insists was a gift to help me out since I haven't been able to find a job yet. It's incredibly uplifting, and relieving, and I will make the most of this fantastic gift by doubling my efforts to find work.

Since I'm still at my parents and have access to the larger part of my toy collection, I took this photo of Johann Krauss from BPRD, a figure I've had for a long time but never really photographed, despite being one of my favourite characters from the series (though Abe Sapien is my actual favourite), and a character who I feel never really gets enough love.

View large to better see the 'cartoony' effect I applied.

EDIT: Replaced the photo with one where I edited the glowing spectral projection a bit to keep it more in tone with the cartoony vibe.

Added a layer to the ectoplasm recipe, using Caliban Green as a buffer between the blue-black shading and the mid tones. I also tweaked the final highlight by mixing white ink and Pallid Wych Flesh to get sharper lines. They still spread and I spent a while on the cleaning up.

The robes are just blocked in with Mechanicus Standard Grey, and the trim is Khorne Red.

I didn't even have facial hair at the time. It just manifested. Polaroids can be ghostly. I love broken cameras.

I added Drakenhof Nightshade to the upper edges of the ectoplasm where it meets the robes and blended it down with a damp brush, then did some edge highlighting with Ogryn Camo, Ushabti Bone and Pallid Wych Flesh on the very ends.

The robes are blocked in with Dryad Bark to see how it might look, and the hands have had a heavy wash of Nightshade, but I'm still not sure about them.

I think I got the steps in the wrong order and the robes have ended up quite untidy, although the additional texture is good. I'll clean up around the highlights in daylight and I need to get rid of some stray drybrush dots on the ectoplasm.

Not a problem to have the drybrushing hit the trim as that'll all be hidden by the highlights on the red later.

Something toxic appears to be escaping from a back door in Covent Garden.

Believe it or not, a few nights ago, my own bathrobe was badly in need of a wash, and it was freezing in our home (turning on heat admits to ending summer, so we usually don't turn it on until it gets REALLY consistantly cold outside!). Anywho, I asked my husband, John, if I could use his because he rarely dons it. Of course, it swamped me...hood to my nose, sleeves hanging several inches over my hands. So, I asked him to take a picture. I originally didn't intend to do more than sharpen the photo and clone out some clutter in the foreground. But, the more I messed with the original photo, the more fun it got for me, Sharpening was just the beginning, as you can see. Basically, I tented the background, painted out the fact, added some fancy brush color for ectoplasm, removed the tie, and used the smear tool to make the ghostly tatters. I didn't use layers for this, although I would not recommend it. Layers makes mistake correction so much easier. However, like I said, I didn't intent to get THIS creative! Happy Holloween!

from wiki:

The Radiolarian Series is an album project by experimental jazz fusion trio Medeski Martin & Wood which is currently in production.

The project is unique among studio albums because, in a reversal of the typical recording process, the band decided to compose and then develop the songs through a series of tours before recording the music in the studio.

In early 2008 the band announced on their official website: "Medeski Martin & Wood are planning three tours, plus three albums in 2008. Each tour and subsequent album will consist of all NEW MUSIC. The plan: Write -> Tour -> Record -> Repeat."

"The problem with us", keyboardist John Medeski explains, "is that when we record an album, by the time a record company gets it out, we’ve already been playing the music for six or eight months, and we’re ready to move on."

The three volumes of The Radiolarian Series will be released as three separate albums. The band has suggested that the series may also be made available as a packaged set.

The Radiolarian Series takes its name from radiolarians (also radiolaria), amoeboid protozoa that produce intricate mineral skeletons, typically with a central capsule dividing the cell into inner and outer portions, called endoplasm and ectoplasm.

Radiolaria grow their intricately beautiful patterned skeleton around their soft core in defiance of normal biological process. This is, according to the band, "similar to Medeski Martin and Wood's latest creative cycle."

The Radiolarian Series consists of music composed and developed over the course of the band's three-part 2008 "Viva la Evolution" Tour:

Part One: February 19-29 (Northeast U.S.)

Part Two: July 11-18 (Southeast U.S.)

Part Three: November 12-22 (Pacific Northwest)

Thank you so much, Maria! He's a dream come true (a problematic one) xD

This snowflake had just fallen on the patio, and I snapped this pic just before it melted. The bright areas around the flake aren't ectoplasmic goo, they're freshly melted snowflake bits.

can't find a damn thing in this place. the map actually makes it harder, not easier.

1 of my stranger ideas but went down well. Light pastry covered in chocolate spread, a layer of pistachio custard and finished with crushed ginger biscuits mixed with grated chocolate. Similar to the Manchester tart but fun colour for halloween.

"Method earlier introduced by spiritualists, in which paraffin was used to obtain a wax mould from the materialized ectoplasmic forms."

This is my attempt to make a scary ghost. He is half-skeleton, half-ectoplasm.

The initial idea was to make a hybrid. Its spectral body is made up of translucent green pieces.

Ovoid to cylindrical; ciliation uniform; oral basket made up of double trichites which end up deep in ectoplasm. Macronucleus ovoid, reniform or ellongate. Cell body 80-200 micron long.

Same colours as usual (Drakenhof, Caliban, Loren, Ogryn) but with all but the last applied using a mix of flow improver and retarder. Great for the mid-tone blending.
