A 114-car Sparks, Nevada - North Platte, Nebraska "extra" manifest squeals around a six degree curve along the Lincoln Highway in Echo, Utah on Saturday, April 29, 2023. The old UP Park City branch once connected here, where I-84 (to Portland) and I-80 (to San Francisco) connect today. I want to live in that nifty McMansion on a hill at upper right!

According to track charts, the six degree curve at Echo, Utah, mile post 952.2 of the Evanston Subdivision is the sharpest west of Omaha, Nebraska.

No doubt there were curves as sharp or sharper than six degrees along the original transcontinental route. Over the years, 40 miles of track have been trimmed from line changes and track realignments. Due of geography, there is no practical way to reduce the six degree curve at the east end of town.

Union Pacific 8901 leads the INPOA 08 train along the Lincoln Highway into the aforementioned curve. Maximum train speed through the 102 degree arc is 35 mph, even for passenger. To add more fun, eastbound trains immediately hit a 1.14% compensated grade at the speed restricted curve, extending 24 miles to the 6,842 ft. summit at Wahsatch.

Echo at Hatteras, enjoying the good weather - before the Nor’easter hit and hung around for four days. Two houses collapsed in to the ocean - not the one we were in thankfully, but we were very oceanfront and very nervous as the tides whipped closer and closer with every day. We were relieved when the storm passed - until we lost all communication with the outside world thanks to the cable carrying it all being accidentally cut - on Friday the 13th no less. An emergency alert did make it to my cell phone after a few hours to say there was no way to reach anyone - including 911 - so to drive to nearest fire or medical facility in the event of an emergency….It took about 14 hours for service to be restored and of course there was another thunderstorm. We survived, so yay for that. Trips to Hatteras are never dull.

It's a shot that's been done thousands of times, but it's easy to get to and who can argue with this scenery? An Ace led hotshot descends into Echo Canyon as viewed from the overlook at the I-80 rest stop. Certainly scenery that we don't have at home in Alabama, but Utah can keep the snow.

On a hike from Echo Park to Mitten Park, provided a novel perspective on Echo Park. Echo Rock or Steamboat Rock is on the left, and the overlook from Harper's Corner is high above on the right. The campground in Echo Park is hidden in the boxelder trees in the center of the photo. A cairn is in the lower right corner.

Took the new lens as far as the deck - Echo paused just long enough for a quick pic. Sunshine making a nice change from all the dreary rainy weather that’s been plaguing us in the DC area

Due to a massive landslide, the D&RGW main line in Thistle, Utah was shut down for 90 days while the track was rerouted around the blockage. During that service disruption, Union Pacific forwarded Rio Grande trains between Ogden and Denver.

It's that magical time of year at Echo Ridge. Fires are lit and cabins are warm as the snow starts to fall on the evergreen forests. Hear the ice sing under the setting sun and make a wish upon a shooting star.

the airport is a place of passage, a liminal zone where lives intersect briefly, then scatter. here, under the sharp geometry of steel and glass, a lone traveler walks, dwarfed by the vast structure that frames her journey. the parallel lines of the moving walkway stretch into infinity, a quiet reminder of forward motion, of destinations yet to come. the muted sepia tones soften the harsh modernity, wrapping the scene in a blanket of nostalgia. it’s a moment caught between departures and arrivals, between now and soon—a fleeting whisper in the echoing halls of transit.

A Hoth shot, as promised! Tomorrow it's supposed to rain, so the snow will disappear soon :(

That whole house is devoted to karaoke - and actually Big Echo is a brand name that you will see all over the Tokyo (and I would hazard a guess that they are quite popular outside of that city too). There are a lot of karaoke places as such, and Big Echo is the biggest one. They are owned by the Daiichi Kosho Company (founded in 1973 - which specialises in karaoke equipment).
