60 metres high, with 42 enclosed capsules overlooking Albert Dock, Liverpol's Echo Wheel affords spectacular panoramic views of the city, across the River Mersey & all the way to the Welsh mountains. Nearing the end of its 2nd year, am not sure that it's yet been declared a permanent feature. No, I didn't ride it. Vertigo is my middle name *~*
somehow ended up at camp this summer. my family packed up and drove the six hours, arrived at midnight and left the next morning before noon. worthwhile.
Flash and blur - lighting the edges of the model with continuous gelled lights (using the modelling lamps in the strobes) and then freezing the model with another strobe (modelling light off. no gel). Half second exposure moving the camera during the exposure diagonally from top left to bottom right. A completely dark studio is essential for this.
I was working with a new model - Lou Lavender, and I think she really nailed the look on this one.
Located about 3 miles south of downtown Fort Worth, this long-abandoned municipal incinerator near Echo Lake still stands, unused for perhaps over 40 years now. Detailed information on it's past is somewhat sketchy, but it seems the facility was built sometime in the 1950's and was in service for only a few years before changes in EPA regulations forced it's closure sometime in the 60's, as well as it's sister facility, just north of downtown.
The sturdy brick & concrete construction has enabled the building to largely retain it's structural integrity over the past few decades, despite the abuse, disuse and neglect that comes naturally from abandonment. That said, there are a couple spots on the tar & gravel roof that have caved in, and I discovered an appreciable amount of standing water on other parts of it , after climbing the 25 foot interior ladder up to it, in the dark. In short, the roof is NOT a safe place to be...
During the 80's & 90's the place evidently became a hotbed for drug activity, with many deals occuring on the premises. At some point during this period, a woman came there to make a purchase, and somehow managed to fall 40 feet to her death into the massive, 20-foot deep trash hoppers on the ground floor. Did she fall...did she jump...or was she pushed?
As that story points out, this is a fairly dangerous place to go poking around, especially in the dark. For example, the 3rd floor has two large rectangular holes, each perhaps 4x6 feet, located in the middle of the walkway, leaving only a narrow one-foot strip of concrete between them and a low wall...all that protects you from duplicating the drug buyer's fall. The fall through the hole would certainly be preferable, perhaps even survivable, if you can manage to grab some of the furnace on your way down to slow your fall...perhaps only 15 to 20 feet.
Anyway, the incinerator is a great spot for interior light-painting; lots of different surfaces, angles and large, open areas to give space & depth to your shots, when desired...just be careful on that 3rd floor!

Restored Market Street Railway PCC car #1053 carries a livery that pays tribute to Brooklyn & Queens Transit Corporation, which ran 100 PCC cars between 1936 and 1956. #1053 began life in Philadelphia.

Strobist: one flash from the right and a bit behind the model with a pink gel, and one flash from the left with a cian gel.
Mt Evans towers in the distance while clouds and blue sky reflect in Echo Lake.
I think that this has to be one of the best cloud shots I have personally taken. I really nailed the texture and white balance of how the clouds looked while sitting there composing the shot.
Definitely one of my personal favs of this trip.

Where else in the Northwest can you stroll past 22 preserved Victorian homes on the National Historic Register? Built in the mid-to-late 1800s, these beautifully restored homes were built to house U.S. Army officers stationed at Vancouver Barracks. The Grant House, built in 1850, now houses The Grant House Restaurant. The Marshall House, built in 1886, offers tours and an exhibit on General George C. Marshall, it’s most famous resident.
A distant wind whistles through the trees. The scent of a fireplace, lit for the first time in the winter, lilts through the air. You remember something … something from long ago, when you were a child and the world seemed a more magical place. What is it? You try, but the full memory won't come back. It's only an echo.

Those echos of the past, when the sun shone, you squished your toes in the sand as the salt water lapped about your ankles … the happy cries of children as they played and ran … the magic of a birthday, the cake almost too big to be imagined, glowing with candles as happy faces surrounded you and looked on with love. Echo remembers those times, too, and wants nothing more than to share in the magical times to come.

Royal Navy survey vessel HMS Echo.
Echo was launched at Appledore in Devon in 2002, and was designed to carry out a wide range of survey work, including support to submarine and amphibious operations, through the collection of oceanographic and bathymetric (analysis of the ocean, its salinity and sound profile) data.
Her survey motor boat, Pathfinder, is capable of operating independently, supporting a small group of surveyors who can live and work ashore to carry out surveys.
Echo, which is based in Devonport, was the first Royal Navy ship to use azimuth thrusters, where the propellers are part of a swivelling pod, allowing for precise manouevring.
Capable of collecting an array of military hydrographic and oceanographic data, due to her multi-role capability Echo is also equipped to support mine warfare and amphibious operations.
To ensure she can operate in any environment she possesses a impressive array of weapons for force protection. Echo also carries a small detachment of Royal Marines.
Echo left Devonport in the first week of 2011 on a two-year deployment to the Red Sea, the Gulf, the Indian Ocean, the Middle and Far East and returned to home waters at Devonport in August 2012. After spending two months in Falmouth for a revamp, the specialist survey ship spent the final weeks of last year putting would-be navigators through their paces in the waters off the south-west of England.
