Happy Easter!

Eggs, in general, were a traditional symbol of fertility and rebirth in different faiths and religions.

In the case of Mesopotamia, the Easter egg comes from the fertility Goddess Ishtar, (Astarte, Ashera, Astaroth, Inanna), worshiped by the Babylonians, Assyrians, Phoenicians, Canaanites...

Ishtar is the origin of the name given in English to the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus on the third day, a celebration that is called Easter and in German, Ostern.

Between the 9th and 18th centuries, the Church prohibited the consumption of eggs during Lent, considering it equivalent to meat, and for this reason people cooked and painted them to differentiate them from frescoes and to be able to consume them on Easter Day.

Over time, these traditions were incorporated into the Easter festivity and today the Easter egg is a universal symbol.

For many, the egg resembles the resurrection as a symbol of new life.

Commerce and modernity, for their part, have been in charge of incorporating chocolate eggs, and plastic eggs to be filled with sweets, and which according to legend are hidden by the Easter rabbit for children to look for. and therefore, find them and eat them. (Source: Wikipedia)

Christ is risen!

I will be leaving to visit my family immediately after work Thursday, will be back by Monday.

Happy Easter everyone! :-)

(Please no award group invites ... Your comments mean more to me. Many thanks!)

There are all kinds of Easter nests that children in this country put up in the garden so that the Easter bunny can lay colourful eggs and sweets. My daughter decorated this one.

The tradition of the Easter nest (Osternest) has its roots in German folklore. It is closely tied to the concept of the Easter Bunny (Osterhase), which originated in Germany long back, according to AI during the 17th century. Children would prepare nests for the Easter Bunny to lay colorful eggs. AI further summarizes "This custom was influenced by pre-Christian pagan traditions celebrating spring and later merged with Christian Easter celebrations."

Every year I paint only one Easter Egg. It takes a lot of time to paint the egg, but this year I managed to finish it on time :)

Inspired by Great Masters: Monet, van Gogh, Klimt, Dali and Chagall.

I wish a happy Easter and I hope that after Easter I will emerge from nowhere again :-)

It was exactly a year ago that I was in Lima for Easter. How quickly everything can change ... hope remains - especially for people in countries that do not have such a well-developed health system …

I wish a joyful Easter time to all friends on Flickr!

Happy Easter everyone ! Hope you are keeping safe during these crazy times !

The Easter bunny did visit in the spring a few years ago when my girls would come around - - but no visitors today

Easter Sunday April 9, 2023 If ever the world has need of a risen Savior it's now.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” John 20:1-2

Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). John 20:11-16

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:26-29

Took this photo in our yard after we colored Easter Eggs.

I was hoping to make it look like these flowering plants were growing Easter Eggs. These eggs did not fit very well inside the leaves of these plants. The eggs kept rolling off the plants because they were so heavy.

The traditional Easter Simnel cake is a rich fruitcake with a layer of marzipan baked in the centre. The remaining marzipan is used to decorate the cake, along with seasonal flowers from the garden.

A common myth about Easter Island, or Rapa Nui as natives call it, is that the island experienced societal collapse due to cutting down the trees for statue building, causing an ecological disaster. This is only half the story. While the native Rapa Nui people did cut down the trees, it was to pave the way for agriculture when they first settled the island in the 13th century. The statues themselves were moved using ropes which made it look like they "walked". The islanders lived in relative peace and isolation away from the affairs of the world, until it came to their shores.

The downfall of Easter Island came when it was first discovered by the Dutch in 1722. First contact between the Dutch and Rapa Nui took a violent turn due to the anxieties of the Dutch when dealing with the natives. After this encounter, the Dutch left the island, but they left behind European diseases. The isolated islanders had no natural immunity to diseases like smallpox and many were wiped out. A Spanish expedition in 1770 brought a second wave of disease to the natives. The islanders lost faith in their ancestors who were supposed to protect them and began tearing down their statues. When James Cook arrived in 1774, he saw a demoralized people who feared outsiders.

For the next century, the island was the victim of rapacious slave raids with the worst one happening in 1862 by Peruvian slave raiders. This raid saw the capture of 1500 people, or half the islands population. This was met with international outrage, and they were released in 1863. Unfortunately, it was too late for a majority of the islanders, including the islands elders who understood the undeciphered rongorongo language. The island was soon annexed by Chile in 1888, fearing the possibility of the British or French annexing it. Much of the island was then turned into a sheep farm run by the Williamson-Balfour company. The natives that were left were forced to live in the town of Hanga Roa and work on the farm to make a living.
