The Church begins the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord with the solemn Easter Vigil, usually celebrated late at night on Holy Saturday. The Vigil consists of the Liturgy of Light, the reading of the Prophecies, the Baptismal Liturgy and the celebration of Holy Mass.

Seven scriptural Prophecies are then read- biblical passages which had prophecied the comming of the Lord. The Alleluia is sung for the first time since the beginning of Lent. After the Gospel and sermon, the Baptismal Liturgy begins, in which the people present in church are reminded of the time when they themselves received this holy Sacrament, and renew their baptismal promises. After the blessing of new baptismal water, Baptism is administered to the Catechumens and Candidates are received into the Church. Then follows the celebration of Holy Mass.
At St. John Cantius, this year's Easter Vigil was celebrated by the Rev. Bishop Joseph Perry. The Bishop administered the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation to this year's Catechumens.
I took this on the first full day of my two week stay onEaster Island in 2013.
My flight from Santiago had been delayed by about 8 hours the previous day. No big deal for me (other than the inconvenience on the day...I could draw a map of Santiago airport from memory!)
So, I was taking the first day easy...just wandered around the town, Hanga Roa. It's population had gone up from about 3500 in 2000...to 6000 in 2013...as annual tourist numbers had gone from 20,000 to 80,000 in the same time.
This is the small harbour in the town. Pretty much everything on Easter Island has to be delivered from the Chilean mainland.
For the next 12 days of my stay, I hired a car, which was a great move. I got a big discount for hiring for so long (think it cost me $56 per day)...and that gave me complete freedom. A single taxi ride to Ahu Tongariki at dawn (which I did ten times) would have cost $50 for each trip.
Point to note; There is no vehicle insurance on Easter island...so drive very carefully. The roads are pretty quiet in terms of traffic...but there are horses wandering all over the island (introduced by Catholic missionaries I believe). They were a regular hazard on my dawn drives to Ahu Tongariki...but happily, without any accidents!
There's a small cafe called Mikafe which reputedly serves the best ice cream on the island. I can't say if that's true...but I can say that it is VERY good. :-)

I think this has to be at the Haggard Dairy Farm outside of Adrian, Missouri. Obviously from the indication on the print, this is Easter 1955. There were a total of 13 cousins on my dad's side of the family and Easter was one of the times we usually got everyone together. No doubt, a big Easter egg hunt had already taken place, or was about to. No fake eggs here. All farm fresh.
Some summers, my sister and I would spend a week or so at the farm. Those weeks gave us a chance to see a glimpse of a lifestyle that was vanishing in America. No indoor plumbing. We pumped water from just outside the kitchen door and carried it inside. The outhouse was a short walk out the back door and into the pasture. One summer our grandparents let us buy a puppy at a farm sale. I'm not sure if it had been prearranged with our folks at home or not. On Saturdays we would go into town and get to see a matinee movie while the old folks shopped. I think it cost a nickel to see the movie, but it might have been a quarter. The shows were usually old B-Movie westerns. I can remember an old general store in town where we would usually find Grandma. It had a little of everything for the farm family. Sort of a cross between a dime store and a hardware.
When there were enough cousins around in the summer, we would find lots of turtles around the ponds and elsewhere on the farm. Each kid would paint his name on the turtle with fingernail polish and then we would attempt to have races or play other turtle games.
Out in the workshop was an old foot powered grinding wheel for sharpening farm tools. I spent a lot of time grinding away at various implements, probably doing more damage than good.
Meanwhile, in the dairy barn, there seemed to be an endless supply of farm cats and kittens. Climbing into the hay bales we would inevitably find a new litter and then we would pester them to no end.
A big event would be to get the tractor out and take a ride with grandpa. If there was a crowd of cousins, we would hitch up a wagon for a ride, but since I was the oldest boy, I sometimes got to drive the tractor with grandpa. It was a powerful feeling to hear the engine rev when I pulled on the throttle. I really can't remember to what extent I could drive, but I believed I was doing it all.
Miss Punky and Orchid dyed the Easter chicks bright pink to the dismay of the Easter Bunny and the Easter Chicken.
We're having a small dinner party tonight with some good old friends. So I thought I'd run a trial for an idea I had for my husband's upcoming work breakfast. Inside is yummy chocolate cake.
Easter is the pinnacle of the Church's liturgical year and is the solemnity upon which the rest of the year revolves. It was on the first Easter Sunday that the Lord's disciples discovered the empty tomb, indicating that Christ had risen from the dead.
By His Resurrection Jesus Christ triumphed over death, paid the debt that came through the sin of Adam, and thus opened the gates of Heaven to mankind. Thus, the Lord's Resurrection on Easter thus marks the turning point in salvation history.
It is for this reason that Christians have great reason to rejoice in the new life brought to us by the Risen Savior. Salvation has come at last! For this reason, the Church resumes the use of the word "alleluia" which is said with even greater frequency and fervor for the rest of the fifty days of the Easter season, also known as 'Paschaltide.'

Fourteen giant Easter eggs from the northern Croatian city of Koprivnica will tour 13 cities, including a few abroad.
The eggs are 2.05 metres high and weigh 30 kilos apiece. Made of polyester, the eggs have been painted by twenty artists, all members of local artistic associations.
The eggs, decorated with naive art, will visit New York, Madrid, Budapest, Bratislava, Klagenfurt, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Varazdin, Koprivnica, Bjelovar, Djurdjevac, Krizevci and Molve.
They will be on exhibit for three weeks in each city. The first exhibition will be on 28 March in Klagenfurt, according to the daily "Vecernji list."
