After many coats of dryloc, there's still some staining coming through. Oh well, still a big improvement.

The walls had fiberglass insulation blankets glued to them. It was ugly stuff, not to mention my cats loved to claw at it, and down the road my kids would have probably wanted to eat it.

These settees came out of a college cafeteria a long time ago. They were here when we bought the house. I'm moving them out of the way so I can rip the rest of the yellow insulation off the walls.

Just trying to get everything cleaned up before the ceiling gets painted.

Our home started as a farm house built in 1900. In 1985, an addition was made. This is the old foundation (mortar and stone).

You have to step down into the other part of the basement. You can kinda see the step, between the step stool and safe.

You can see some more patching of the old basement wall. This wall is an interior wall.

Another view of the stairs. I removed the hand rail and the 2x4s that were supporting it. You can see new flourescent lighting on the floor, waiting to be installed.

These are the basement stairs.

Lower part of the basement. I covered some of my games to keep dust from getting on them. The rest of the games were moved into the other part of the basement

After we got our tiles home, we took a look at them. Then I licked one, because when else can you do that and have it not be dirty? Opportunity only knocks once -- when life gives you lemons... You lick them.

Anyway, we were NOT happy with the fact that the color in the actual Armstrong tiles seemed a lot less vibrant than the color in the sample. The sample was what we wanted, and we felt a bit gyped. So we brought a tile to the store, found the sample, and took a few pictures. The samples come with a disclaimer that the color might not be an exact match, but the difference was quite pronounced to us. So don't trust Armstrong samples. They certainly seem to make their samples as misrepresentative as they can legally get away with.

We went with a diagonal checkboard of black, and violet bloom. In this picture, we laid them on the diagonal checkboard of the floor as a reminder of our intended plans. Of cousre, when we got the violet bloom, it was closer to blue than violet. Thanks for nothing, Armstrong.

BACKSTORY: Now that we finally got everything painted, it was time to re-floor the downstairs. Today we drove around and checked some out.

Unfortunately, the Armstrong Excelon tiles we selected scratch very easily, so we were no better off than if we had gotten parquet, which we didn't get because we didn't watn to deal with unrepairable scratches... As the GP38-3 pushes along the CGW Byron spur we easily catch them at several unmarked crossings. This 90# rail is small based on today's standards, but served it purpose well, back in the day.

This GP38-3 rides along on the old Chicago Great Western near Byron Illinois. Trackage here is maintained by the Excelon company to connect the Byron Nuclear facility for the receiving of large equipment to maintain power production.

Stopped by the nuke plant on the way home for a couple of quick shots.

Some of the VCT (vinyl composite tiles) we were considering. We went with a diagonal checkboard of black, and violet bloom. But when we got the violet bloom, it was closer to blue than violet. Thanks for nothing, Armstrong.

BACKSTORY: Now that we finally got everything painted, it was time to re-floor the downstairs. Today we drove around and checked some out.

D'oh! Of course it would have helped if Marty Engel at Floorcraft had bothered to advise us that we were supposed to polish and seal it afterwards. Armstrong's website mentions this, but how were we supposed to know we needed to even look this up? When we sent Marty Engel email asking why the floors scratched so much, he replied back, "Get area rugs" and told us nothing about needing to seal it.

We're not sure how we feel about FloorCraft after this job. There's yet to be a contractor that has actually gotten us the results we want -- with anything. And We can't really properly seal and polish it properly now, because the pool table and furniture has all been moved back.

Anyway: Avoid Armstrong Excelon. Also: Their sample colors were quite different than the real thing. They say that, but still. The sample was a "better" shade, and then when we bought the actual tiles, they were a "worse" shade. The difference was not minor. On August 28th, CP local B67 delivered a new transformer to the Exelon Nuclear Plant in Byron, IL. The transformer was built in Houston and delivered to the CP by BNSF at Savanna. CP then brought it into Byron on the Chicago sub and ran it up the old CGW to the plant.

The Transformer takes up the whole width of German Church Rd as it is shoved the final few hundred feet in the secure area of the plant. The string of cars to the right is all of the Northern Illinois Railfans that turned out for the rare move.
