We had a severe line of thunderstorms passing overhead, and Jake started freaking out. Here he's trying to fit through the cat door.

We painted the rise of the step so people would see it and not trip. Notice the posts were painted black too.

This is looking into the old part of the basement...future remodeling project.

This is the lower basement ceiling after being painted. You can also see the new lighting I installed.

We painted under the stairs as well, because this would show. We originally we're thinking of building storage under the stairs, but it took away from the open & airy feel of the space.

A shot of the lower basement, painting completed.

Stripping insulation off the other walls. These walls were added in 1985, and this part of the basement is a little taller. I've also installed the new lighting at this point.

This is the base of the old chimney. We're almost done painting this.

Here's another view of the walls and stairs

You can see that the fresh paint and new lighting really brighten the space.

This is the rest of the lower basement, after painting the ceiling. These settees really cleaned up nicely (you'll see in a later picture).

Cleaning up the floor, getting ready to lay the vinyl tiles.

After 3 coats of paint, we were getting tired of painting. You can still see the cavities in the wall, where we couldn't get the paint.

You really should paint the ceiling first, as the paint will go every where. I use an airless sprayer which did a good job of covering everything. Here you see Jake taking a nap, while I'm putting the paint sprayer away.

This is the last section that needed insulation removed. You can see Funhouse Pinball covered, and also a good place to put tools.

We didn't use dryloc on the lower basement walls, as they're fairly new, and dry.

You can see a couple spots that I missed. I went back and touched up things with a brush.

Now that the ceiling was done, we could start painting the walls. We used dryloc on these walls, because they're mortar and stone, and needed something that would bond well. It's a real pain applying this stuff. Hopefully Jake moves before he gets painted.

We're starting to paint the walls. The first of many coats.

The walls have been stripped of their insulation, and we also applied some mortar to patch the cracks.

The sump is located in the far corner. I had a dehumidifier running the whole time, to help the paint dry. We're fortunate that our basement is fairly dry. The sump runs maybe once after 3 hours.

Just showing how everything in the ceiling was painted, including water pipes, sewer pipes, and ducts. You can see one of our cats, Stella, sitting in the doorway, watching all the action.

You can see some fresh mortar applied to the wall (grey stuff). This is part of the old chimney that was removed when the the house was remodeled in 1985. I also had to use some leveling compound on the floor. These cement blocks helped hold the form together.
