E271 picks up some speed as it races south past the Chebanse depot with IC 1015.

CSX L306, also known as the "Foreign Flyer", wastes no time heading east along CN's Flint Subdivision at Emmett, Michigan. They were quickly following behind E271 as part of a brief 3 train parade. This train starts its journey in Flint, heads east along CN rails to Port Huron, until turning south onto home rails via the Port Huron Subdivision. There the train trundles along the former PH&D until reaching its final destination of St. Clair.

IC 1012 trails CN 5675 on E271 past the old searchlights at West Toronto, with their replacements nearby waiting to be cut in. That explains why this area was clear cut of all brush compared to when I shot no.549 here last summer.

One of the more interesting trains to see on the Lafy is the 181. This Detroit-Kansas City freight is quite the mixed bag in terms of length, but in terms of cars - not much variation. Lots of boxcars, and particularly the 86ft boxcars. These behemoths are some of the largest normal rollingstock on the rails today, and the largest boxcars you can see. When newly delivered through the 60s and 70s, these cars were full of colours and interesting designs. Today, they're less colourful. Primarily brown NS and Southern cars make up most of the set, but a few Grand Trunk blue cars, a few IC/ICG CN grey repaints here and there, and maybe, just maybe, you might happen to snag one of the very few ICG orange boxcars.

This 181, we caught while waiting for CN's GT-heritage led E271 to finish work in Champaign. We didn't see any orange, though a little blue and grey breaks up all the brown in this short train at Sadorus. Many of these cars are becoming too old for interchange service, hitting that 50 year limit in short order. Many cars were able to get extensions, and a good amount of cars are pretty captive here, but as these cars age out, many are scrapped. Nobody really makes boxcars of this size these days, so it really makes you wonder what the future of autoparts trains will be. Maybe someone will finally start up a production line for some new 86 footers? We wouldn't get the fun colours and artwork designs of yesteryear, but hopefully the big 86ft car will keep going for a long time.

The GTW heritage SD70M-2 heads up CN E271, empty autoracks for Flat Rock, Michigan, rolling to a crew change stop at Snider West on the Halton bypass track, just outside MacMillan Yard.

No longer are the days where a quintet of blue and red Geeps could be found racing down CN rails between Montreal and Chicago, hauling Railrunner hotshots with trailers riding inside wellcars, but a heritage unit in 2021 will suffice, I suppose...

CN E271 notches out as they pass under the signal bridge at Flossmoor with SD70M-2 8018 flying solo.

CN E271, a regular westbound unit train carrying automobiles, ducks under a rusted signal bridge at Clarke on a gloomy winter afternoon. These signals once governed sidings on each side of the mainline, one of many which date back to the days of the UAC Turbo Train. Those days are long gone and train lengths have grown exponentially, contributing to their disuse. Regardless, the searchlight signals continue to soldier on.

About 15 minutes after A408 made it through Farina, E271 scoots past with its pair of Deathstars. Only the old IC can you shoot to standard cab led road trains within 15 minutes of each other.

A lone CN GEVO brings E271 westbound through the sleepy town of Emmett, Michigan. There's not much going on here apart from the rumblings of the Star of the West Milling Company and trains blazing through at around 40-50 mph. Today was pleasantly warm at 50 degrees, leading to tons of snow melt which regrettably leaves a lot of mud, standing water, and filthy snow piles all around. Still rather have this than 100 degree summers though.
