Not a shot I had considered going for when I made the eastward trip to find the highly sought after E271. After starting in Port Huron, a couple stops on the way lead to me being convinced to head for the Detroit Art Park. Slowly navigating their way over the high line and the famous FIsher Building standing in the distance, 271 catches an approach at Avery short of heading on to Conrail Shared Assets.

With a long train of empty racks for Ford in Flat Rock, E271 makes the hard charge our of the St. Clair Tunnel with the fan favorite BC Rail heritage leading. To the right of the frame, you can see the portal of the original St. Clair Tunnel into Canada that was closed and sealed not long after the new tunnel opened in 1994.

CN E271 rolls west along what was once the GTR. A cut of empty racks in tow of a GTW heritage unit seems fit with GTW's big role in the auto industry.

Train E271 (Battle Creek, MI - Salem, IL) with IC 2460 (Ex LMS C40-8W) overtakes train Q116 (Markham, IL - Flat Rock, MI) with a pair of CN SD60s (5421/5407). E271 would then back into CN’s Markham Yard after completing its train for the SB run on the IC. Q116 would later begin the finishing touches of adding on the cut of Intermodal needed for his EB run on the GTW, once E271 cleared the plant. Taken: 1-25-21.
Canadian National's tribute to Grand Funk Western visited yesterday. SD-bigmofo 8952 leads train E271 across Broad Street.
CN E271 has a nice 90's lashup for power as it tackles the hill at Beare on it's way up the York Sub. I had shot CP H19 here about 40 minutes beforehand and stuck around simply out of boredom, so seeing this train pop out from the underpass was certainly a pleasant surprise considering gevos pretty much rule the York Sub these days.
CNs British Columbia Railway heritage unit departs Homewood, Illinois on train E271 in perfect winter evening light. This train would wait on L536 with a repaint SD70 before blasting off down the IC main.
After getting the day off from work, I headed over to the CN Mount Clemens sub to intercept CN E271 which had about 5300ft of empty auto racks bound for Flat Rock, MI and the added bonus of CN 3115 the BOCL Heritage Unit as the sole unit. Here we see E271 rolling through the town of New Haven headed south in some nice light.

CN 8952 disappeared on us for a while there. The last time I photographed it was during 2020, after which it was damaged and sent away for repairs. Now, three years later, it's on the head end of unit auto train E271 as it weaves around the large S-curve at Newtonville.
IC 1001 is the sole IC-painted engine on a six-unit L515 that is about to double-up at Markham. On 4 is E271 with a rare ex-ATSF C40-8W formerly assigned to the DMIR and a UP YYCCN on 3. The Amtrak platform has been ripped up during the ongoing renovation of the Homewood station.
CN E271 flies through Lynden behind BCOL 4607 and CSXT 8898. I quickly hopped in my car at Copetown and got well ahead of them to snag a second shot.
CN E271 is third in a pack of 3 back-to-back-to-back westbound trains heading up the York Sub after waiting on a few eastbounds to pass. It is hot on the tail of M321 and is chasing clear to stop signals as 321 struggles up the grade at Beare.
