Just over a week ago, the radar showed a potential break in the storm that was raining up and down the west coast of California. So what does any self respecting seascape photographer do? I made my way to one of my favorite local spots and enjoyed the stormy light at the beach.
This is the infamous "hole" in Hole in the Wall beach. I've passed through here hundreds of times, often running from the waves that wash through here. The tide was pretty low on this evening, and the arch was taller than usual as the storms had scoured out a lot of sand. The low tide did allow for some nice sunset reflections vs. having water movement in the foreground. I'd like to try this composition again with more waves, but the sand has already started to build back up and the interesting rocks along the bottom are starting to get covered up.
This image easily had too much dynamic range for a single exposure and is a result of double processing a single RAW file and blending it with a bracketed "fused" image using the Exposure Fusion function in Photomatix. I am keen to try more advanced image blending techniques for shots such as this where traditional filter use and single exposures just don't work.
Anyway, hope everyone had a great weekend and as always, thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it!

a long exposure from the time when moss was still growing strong on the coastal rocks in Winter months in Western Australia... i liked the movement of the clouds - they were coming through rather quickly...

Swallows fly in random and dynamic path, like a bullet but randomly changing direction. It's hard to get them in the frame, and if did, then an instant auto-focus is a must to capture a clear image on its maneuver in air. Photographing fast moving bird not only is an excitement in art but also an opportunity to relook into science (aerodynamic). I guess that’s one of the reward in birding. Hope you like this one. As always, thank you for the comment and/or faves.
An abstract photo of a paneled stainless steel outer wall at the Science Center of Iowa. The image has been modified to add different desaturated textures to each panel and then color-graded.
Developed using Darktable 3.6.0. Texture overlays were added in Photoshop.

My wife and I recently spent 3 nights in the fabulous Al Maha resort in the middle of the desert, 1 hour drive from Dubai. Each suite has its own private temperature controlled swimming pool, and a wonderful view on the desert and its wildlife (oryx and gazelles), and you feel completely isolated. Service and food is top class. Several activities are included such as camel rides, falconry, dune safari. A few more shots to come.

The 2-door hardtop roof adds a sleek, airy look to the car. That style of roof has a similar effect on other makes and models.
These ripples at Lake Louise provide a kind of dynamic serenity. Was able to get to the lake from Banff for sunrise last week on a trip. The quiet was palpable. The ripples were provided with a little snowball and added a sense of dynamic movement to the moment.

I've been wanting to make a Companion Cube in this scale for a while. The Cube just wasn't complete without a companion. Chell was a nice challenge and a chance to try out some different sculptural techniques.
In 2006 and 2007, Trainboy and I had a brief period of living next door to each other in DeKalb while he was a student at NIU. We stopped in at Belvidere to check on the CNW sisters one night after an NWI Chapter Meeting in Rockford. I believe Tom, John, Tim and Lance were along for this effort. No flashbulbs used for this nighttime view as there was plenty of available light.
The CNW 8646 & 8701 lived on the Belvidere Sub for many months during this period and I'm pleseantly surprised that 5.5 years later that they are still alive on Uncle Pete's railroad.
