I really like how detailed this photo of Sock is; it was sort of bland in colour but the second I converted it to black and white, it just popped!

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.

I've been wanting to make a Companion Cube in this scale for a while. The Cube just wasn't complete without a companion. Chell was a nice challenge and a chance to try out some different sculptural techniques.

A view looking back to the northeast while hiking along the trail in the Santa Elena Canyon. With the perceived large dynamic range of this setting, I decided to use five bracketed images and then bring it into Aurora HDR to make a conversion for an HDR tiff image. I later did some post-processing work in Viveza 2 and then CEP 4 for the final image.

For the image itself, I just wanted to capture that peaceful and serene look with the river and the mountainsides all around me as I looked off into the distance while in Big Bend National Park.

Melissani cave, discovered in 1951, is located on the island of Kefalonia, in Karavomylos, near Sami. The roof of the cave has collapsed, offering dramatic light around noon, the best time to take the short tour around the cave in the small boats.

The groundwater of Melissani cave outflows at the "Fridi" beach. This brackish water is part of a famous hydrogeological phenomena: seawater is sucked in the west part of the island of Kefalonia, near Argostoli, and expelled in the bay of Sami. In Argostoli, the seawater flows into sinkholes, named katavothres, where water mill turns.

In the heart of the historical center of Nice, a pedestrian street unfolds, captivating all who wander through it. This charming avenue is a tapestry of vivid colors, as the spring season brings an explosion of blooming flowers adorning the tables of cozy restaurants. The façades of the buildings, painted in warm pastels and vibrant hues, complement the floral displays, creating a picturesque scene that feels almost dreamlike. The interplay of sunlight and shadow adds a dynamic quality, enhancing the visual splendor and leaving visitors in awe of the sheer beauty that surrounds them.

As you stroll down this enchanting street, the scents of Provençal cuisine waft through the air, mingling with the fragrant aromas of the blossoms. Each restaurant offers a delightful sensory experience, with dishes that showcase the rich culinary traditions of the region. The inviting smell of freshly baked bread, aromatic herbs, and sizzling seafood dishes draws you in, promising a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, with locals and tourists alike enjoying al fresco dining, their laughter and conversations adding to the vibrant ambiance.

Springtime in Nice transforms this pedestrian street into a living canvas of color and fragrance. The combination of architectural charm and natural beauty creates an irresistible allure. The gentle buzz of activity, the kaleidoscope of flowers, and the mouthwatering aromas form a perfect symphony that celebrates the essence of Provençal life. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to savor each moment, each flavor, and each breathtaking view, ensuring that no one can remain indifferent to its charm.

Motukiekie Beach is a fantastic location on the West Coast of New Zealand.

After a "Blazing Kaikoura" sunrise on the east coast I headed over to the West Coast for sunset.

This spot is only accessible at low tide and even during the very low tide on this particular evening the swell would regularly wash over this scene. This regular water movement however provided another layer to the seastack / starfish combination that the area is famous for!

The growing popularity of Motukiekie for serious landscape photographers is largely off the back of some fantastic images created by Kah Kit Yoong here a couple of years ago. If you haven't already make sure you check out his Flickr stream at www.flickr.com/photos/kahkityoong/ - you won't regret it!

The above image was taken well after the sun had set, providing a wonderful atmosphere including the sea mist in the background. My legs were soaked from the numerous swells and on the walk back down the beach it started to rain. This just added to the adventure at a remarkable location!

As always I would love to hear any thoughts / comments that you may have.

The Sun emitted a strong solar flare, peaking at 7:14 p.m. ET on July 2, 2023. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun constantly, captured an image of the event.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.

This flare is classified as an X1.0 flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength.

NASA works as a research arm of the nation's space weather effort. NASA observes the Sun and our space environment constantly with a fleet of spacecraft that study everything from the Sun's activity to the solar atmosphere, and to the particles and magnetic fields in the space surrounding Earth.

I had read about this technique a few years back, and always wanted to try it. Canada Day brings with it a fireworks celebration on most urban waterfronts, and those celebrating Independence Day will likely have an opportunity to try this tonight.

This technique involves changing the focus of the lens during the exposure. Through the 2 second exposure, I manually turn the focus ring which allows for the fireworks trails to fall out of focus and expand. Shifting the focus back and forth from in-focus to out-of-focus can create interesting patterns unseen by your eyes! It's a fun trick that offers many random "happy accidents" and the exposures are really fun to review, almost like watching the entire fireworks display again from a different perspective.

Just be sure to grab a few frames with static focus, however! You'll need to mask in the foreground from a separate image to keep the landscape details looking normal. This is two images combined - one for the fireworks and one for the landscape below. I adjusted the reflections to match the colours in the fireworks image so that everything blends together nicely.

Next time you're out shooting the fireworks, give this "dynamic focus" technique a try!

(I just looked it up after writing this post, and I originally read about this idea here: www.popphoto.com/how-to/2010/06/make-unique-fireworks-pho... )
