CPKC's 148 train starts a run down the River Subdivision as it eases across the Mississippi River bridge in Hastings. At least it was one of those cloudy days with lots of detail to be found in the sky.

My first time there and a fascinating location only a couple of kms north of Bombo quarry. The rocks on the headland are very sharp and haven't been worn down by the sea. That said, they give a good grip for tripods!
The black volcanic rocks in the sea really absorbed the light so the dynamic range was massive
The 2 young surfers arrived a bit after dawn and went straight to the point to look at the swell near Stack Island (left of picture). I tried to get them in profile in front of the sun. Couldn't risk changing lenses to get a better shot so this (and cropping) was as close as I could get.
6 stop ND + 3 stop ND grad.
The engineer on this eastbound has the dynamic brake handle in the corner, as they howl downgrade into Watertown, slowing for the diamond with Union Pacific's Clyman sub.
