It didn't take long at all for the dye to exhaust.

I put my damp materials in a soda ash soak then scrunch and barely bind. I actually prefer just leaving it sit in a plastic tray, cover with plastic wrap or a lid, and sit in a warm place for 12-48 hours, before rinsing in cool water, and a final wash with Synthrapol in the washing machine.

We covered the walnuts with boiling water, and then we will let them sit outside for at least one week to steep. The water turned dark brown within minutes of this photo.
