This represents the culmination of a day trip that my partner, Walter Ezell and I took to DuPont State Forest near Cedar Mountain, Transylvania County, North Carolina.
I had been to this area ten days prior, and had seen the orchids in tight bud. I figured that they would be in pretty good shape on this day.
We had heard about this location from my flickr buddy, Kelvin Taylor and his cousin Cathy Howell. But on that trip last year, the orchids had already finished blooming. As you can see, they were in perfect bloom on this trip.

Cedar Rock, loved by hikers and mountain bikers alike, is one of those large domes of erupted granite covering hundreds of acres. The west face offers long distance views of the surrounding forest as well as the Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoy more at Internet Brothers Hiking Logs and Gallery.
DuPont State Recreational Forest is a 10,000 acre (40 km²) tract, located in Henderson and Transylvania counties of North Carolina. The name originates from the fact that the DuPont company arranged the sale of the original tract to the state. Adjacent tracts have since been purchased and added to the state forest.
