At DuPont State Forest in Southwestern North Carolina.

We had a chance to visit some waterfalls near Asheville, North Carolina during a family visit in August 2013. The scenery there is great and it was good that there was a lot of rain this summer so the falls were running high. I love visiting this area and hope to make it back there in the near future.

An old Nash Rambler buried in the leaves of many a season. Apparently he missed his turn. Enjoy more at Internet Brothers Hiking Logs and Gallery.

This is a southern gray-cheeked salamander. I base that identification on location. There are four genetically distinct species in the complex that are difficult to determine in the field. For more information: www.iucnredlist.org/details/59348/0

The American Climbing Fern (Lygodium palmatum) has the unusual habit of being vine-like and sprawling or climbing on other vegetation. Although this species is patchily distributed and uncommon in many areas of its range, it is surprisingly abundant in the DuPont State Forest near Brevard, NC where I photographed this specimen.

Day trip to look for Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids in nearby, DuPont State Forest near Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. Although we were just a bit late for the best of the Large Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids, we did find a few that were still holding on. We had much better luck with the Small Yellow Lady's-slipper orchids. We also made a side trip for Aplectrum hyemale or Puttyroot orchid, and we found a few pretty good ones.

Sometimes you get lucky. I was setting up the tripod for some waterfall shots when this great blue heron just happened to fly right into the frame. This is the lower cascade at Triple Falls. See more at Internet Brothers Hiking Logs and Gallery.
