My son just bought a drone that he brought up to the cottage.
Here it is hovering over the point dock.
This drone photo, taken as a long-exposure shot over 10 years ago, holds a very special meaning for me. It evokes memories and tells stories—not only about Karlsruhe but also about my personal journey as a photographer. With the advancements in image processing over the past decade, I felt it was time to give this photo a fresh and modern look without losing its original magic.
The photo showcases Karlsruhe in all its glory: the majestic palace at its center, perfectly embodying the city’s history and its fan-shaped layout. It bridges the past and the present. Remarkably, this photo remains unique to this day—no one has created a comparable long-exposure drone shot of this iconic scene.
The creation of this image holds a symbolic significance for me. As a young boy, I learned in school about Karlsruhe’s history and its unique city design. Years later, almost unconsciously, I transformed that story into this photograph.
Beyond its aesthetic beauty, the photo also highlights significant landmarks of German democracy and science. On the right, nestled in greenery, you can see the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht), Germany’s highest court and a pillar of its legal system. On the left is the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), one of Germany’s leading institutions for science and research. In the center stands the Regional Administrative Office (Regierungspräsidium), surrounded by numerous other government buildings.
This photo is not just a view of Karlsruhe; it is a tribute to the city’s history, architecture, and importance.

With the last Northbound Great Southern Luxury Passenger train for the season in tow, NR31 and NR30 pick up the pace as they head through the Southern Highlands with Journey Beyond Rail service 6AT8 to Coffs Harbour.
With the success of this season, next season is already on sale. The train uses The Ghan rollingstock, which previously was parked up for the months of December and January when that service doesn't operate.

Eristalis is a large genus of hoverflies, family Syrphidae, in the order Diptera. Several species are known as drone flies (or droneflies) because they bear a resemblance to honeybee drones.
Drone flies and their relatives are fairly common generalist pollinators, the larvae of which are aquatic, and breathe through a long, snorkel-like appendage, hence the common name rat-tailed maggots.

Drones in the US are not permitted to fly above 400 feet in most circumstances. So this is a view to the north west from Richland, WA at a height of 390 feet. The large white building in the distance is an agricultural freezer facility with a capacity of 15.8 million cubic feet that handles 2 billion pounds of food per year.
A detailed macro shot capturing a Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax), a remarkable honey bee mimic hoverfly, actively foraging on the vibrant pink flower spike of a Bistort plant (Persicaria, family Polygonaceae). The distinct bands of hair across the fly's compound eyes are visible, highlighting its identity. Taken during late summer as pollinators gather nectar.

For the 1350 drones to coordinate and fulfill their mission, three months of work were necessary. About twenty people programmed the show presented in Geneva, funded by a private sponsor. "It's a computer that directs all the drone choreography, it's even several computers according to each type of drone and that will give each drone where they should go and at what speed," says Cédric Schaller, director of the company Groupe F Suisse, project manager. The Drone Fly is a common hoverfly that closely mimics a honeybee in appearance. It has a furry brown body with dark bands, large eyes, and clear wings. Unlike bees, it has only one pair of wings and does not sting. Adults feed on nectar and pollen, making them valuable pollinators, while their larvae live in stagnant water and help break down organic matter.

It wasn't my intention to try to shoot the Ohio Central, but it was a short detour off the highway so I went to see what I could see. These B23-Super7s (4095 and 4096) were unfortunately just being parked as I arrived so these were the only sunny-side shots I could get. Since they're on the chopping block, these were nice to see. I saw several more the next day.
